[OOC] The Sky is Falling!

Recently a rift opened in Skyhold itself. Although nobody saw it happen, it was rumored to have been opened by a mage native to Thedas and not one of the rifters.

There are damages to the courtyard from where buildings and vegetation have been singed and frozen and dented from the resulting demon battle. It looks a mess. This is a mess.

The purpose of this post is for general opinion gathering, rumormongering, and plotting for the fallout from this fiasco. If people can just open rifts wherever they want, what does this mean for the Inquisition? Can rifters do it, can regular mages do it? Why would someone within Skyhold and ostensibly part of the Inquisition do this in the first place? Why weren't snacks provided?

If you feel so inclined, reply with your character's reaction to the news (or the sight, or the battle) and what action they might want to take, if any. Plot, make CR, do the thing!

Also that in his experience, sorcery isn't something you can "lose control of"; he isn't capable of accidentally doing sorcery, he has to choose to perform a spell. Sorcerers who become monsters don't literally become monsters, they misuse their power because they're bastards.

Cassandra can understand that, and will allow Nari to stay as long as she doesn't cause a distraction or try to interrupt her questioning.

Galadriel will be, as usual, infuriatingly cryptic. She has learned exactly enough about Thedas to be distrustful of Templars and Wardens on principle alone (nobody's mentioned seekers yet so sorry, Cassandra, you get to count as a Templar); the more heavy-handed Cassandra gets with her interrogation the less helpful Galadriel will become. Her accounts will be truthful but probably somewhat lacking.

If you need somebody to express a somewhat alarming (burgeoning) knowledge of how one might attempt to open a rift, I can cheerfully have Galadriel drop that sort of information on Cassandra. Also if anyone else who was present would like their characters' lives made slightly harder, I can have Galadriel insinuate that she suspects she's not the only one who could figure it out.

Nari agrees to do so. Although it's fairly obvious from her mien that should the questioning become hostile, she probably won't be sitting nicely.

Galadriel, in direct opposition to everyone else (it appears), is going to be completely fascinated by how one might use the mark to open a rift and will start careful (as in detailed, not so much "safe") study into the mark on her hand and the veil. This will probably result in some fairly ill-conceived/dangerous tests and magical experiments but she's not particularly concerned about possession or demons, so she won't see the potential harm in them.

If any other mages/rifters/persons of interest wish to assist or actively hinder this questionable line of thinking, please feel free.

Assist! Lenneth is very curious to know if they can get back through the rifts and go home, and she believes that Galadriel possesses the necessary ability and creativity to figure this out.

Lenneth was in Skyhold at the time of the rift opening, but did not take part, as she was

1) far enough away that her hand did not connect to the rift as the others did.

2) overwhelmed by the sudden discovery that she could--in fact--still hear the spirits of the heroic dying. She doesn't know the limit of the ability, but states that her meditation yielded nothing before this.

As a result of said connection, she is adamant about Sina's integrity despite barely having met her.

excuse YOU he is not here to be interrogated lady, he's just some dude who fell out of the sky and happened to have something weird from your universe in his hand fucking shit up.

...Church is basically going to be ruffled and snarky and angry with the way Cassandra goes about finding information so that's...that's gonna be fun.

Excellent. Double the shard power for potential experimentation and Lenneth has magical sense to her; Galadriel will be glad to have her assistance.

Also it's never a bad idea to have a skilled warrior around in case they succeed.

Adelaide was present for the event and is tending to Sina's recovery- she's put forward a motion for an emergency (they really need to quit having these, guys) mage council meeting addressing concerns.

First and foremost she wants to make certain Sina doesn't die- afterward she'll be putting a call out to all rifters for some manner of research and suggest that any of them with magical aptitude have a mage skilled in dispelling at their side while practicing in the future.

Galadriel no, Galadriel why.

Adelaide would like to counter that she supervise Sina personally as she is A) studying the shards to find a way to safely remove them if possible and what they do and B) skilled in dispelling and containing magic. This will not happen again.

Mal was just minding his own business and killed a demon why is he gett'n yelled at?

Adelaide will attempt to put forth suggestions to keep this from happening in the future during the imminent mage council meeting addressing this mess, mostly that of having rifters with magical aptitude accompanied by mages that can dispell magic and prevent them from doing things with their shards, also she means to put forth a motion for more formal research of the shards and what they are capable of.

They can't contain what they don't understand.

Galadriel yes.

She never delegates this sort of thing, sorry Adelaide.

you are gonna get possessed and die. ok? ok. And she'll say she told you so.

Galadriel will totally show up for the research meeting, if only to be kept up on their information. She will probably not invite any local mages to her tests nor extend the same courtesy re:intel.

Oh U. Scarier things than Thedas's demons have tried and failed (but she's welcome to say I Told You So if Galadriel accidentally scours some part of the frostbacks of all life.).

That- that's not when you gloat that's when you have someone made tranquil as they are a danger unto themselves and others.

Jamie thinks this could be a Very Bad Idea. But...if they're going to be going around trying to open rifts they probably should have enough people around to close them again if things go wrong.

And since they're going to be needing someone who can fight, well, then, he's just going to have to go with you, now isn't he?

Congratulations, you have yourself one Scot who tends to think his friends need looking after so they don't wind up in trouble up to their necks. Pity he's just as prone to get into trouble himself.

[personal profile] laurenande 2016-02-06 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Fantastic. She will be delighted to have him.

She trusts Jamie (insofar as she does anyone) and will be utterly forthcoming with information to other Rifters. Sorry native mages.

Lust for knowledge/power mostly.

Well, she would be polite about it and just read peoples' minds but she promised Adelaide she wouldn't do that. She also may have to break that promise which she will feel just terrible about.
