PLAYER PLOT: I'm the Bad Guy

Riftwatch has come to the isolated island of Alamar, off the coast of Ferelden. We’re there to make nice.
Sorry, did I say we? I mean they. You’re Venatori, and you’re here already.
Sorry, did I say we? I mean they. You’re Venatori, and you’re here already.
WHAT:
Everyone will make and play temporary characters: Researchers, scouts, and their protectors.
You've been living in a small, established base in the middle of enemy territory. You have crystals, and friends, and annoying coworkers of your own. You have an artifact of the Old God Urthemiel, and you’re searching for its Gate.
You’re also, completely and without exception, going to die by the end of this plot.
HOW:
- Signups are required, but unlimited.
- This’ll take place in a log and a crystal post.
- Use your usual journals - if you want icons, I suggest just swapping one to your temp, but you're not required to. Live your truth.
- I highly encourage planning existing CR connections between temps. Feel free to do that in this post, or elsewhere.
WHEN:
Signups are open until Sunday, June 9th. I'm aiming to post the log that week.

SIGNUPS
As a guideline, these NPCs should not be more influential or powerful than your average PC. This isn't the ideal plot for your character’s Ancient Magister ancestor, Palpatine, whose shocking return will send ripples through the Fade itself.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Lazar.
Briefly summarize their skills: Alamar is full of criminals and boats. Lazar is a large criminal, who's been on a boat before.
Venatori PC Name: Alais Amphion
Brief summary:
The mildly-neglected Laetan child of magical architects. An academic whose past research got her scouted by the Venatori - not exactly voluntary, not exactly conscription. Has never been to Riftwatch, ignore that time that I briefly apped her.
Decidedly not a combat mage: Her spellwork concerns the fine manipulation of telekinesis and barriers to handle dangerous materials. Curious, and extremely person-loyal. Not that interested in ethical dilemmas - seems like someone else’s problem?
EXISTING CR PLANNING
Let people know if there's a role you're interested in filling for your Venatori guys. Or do it elsewhere! I'm not your dad.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Gwenaëlle Baudin
Briefly summarize their skills: Nothing diplomatic, but decent at strategy and increasingly great at ~muscle~.
Venatori PC Name: Aurelius Hathaca, known to Kirkwall as Markus Osterhaus
Brief summary: Markus Osterhaus has been in Kirkwall for maybe a year longer than Riftwatch (when it arrived as an Inquisition outpost), a resident of Hightown (and neighbour to the de Coucy residence) who is known to Kirkwall as a shrewd negotiator who hammers out deals between businessmen as a middle man for a cut of said deal; he has a sideline in fine antiquities. He is also a Tevene spy who has at various points plagued various agents of Riftwatch and come close to being busted on several occasions; no one has actually done it, yet. Most of his money actually comes from slavery, and he is responsible for the intermittent uptick in elven abductions (...into slavery) from Kirkwall over the past several years.
Aurelius is no mage, and while he works tirelessly for the benefit of his Venatori overlords and Corypheus, obviously, etcetera, etcetera, there are certain ... perks ... for a low level, Soporati Tevene essentially running organised crime and fucking around. Yeah, he's spoked Riftwatch's wheel a few times, and he keeps selling elves into slavery and all, but maybe he isn't that bothered that his various schemes (at one point, attempting to pin the slavery thing on Commander Flint—) have mostly come to nothing significant, since he's at least done enough and secured enough to justify his ongoing presence, or at least make it more of a hassle than it'd be worth to replace him.
He's gangster middle management. He does a lot of paperwork and delegates a lot of responsibility and he's recently arrived to personally check in because it suddenly looks like the work that he's been overseeing is going to matter, and he's not completely sure how he feels about it. Also, several people who think they're the only person he's having an affair with might be here, let me know if you're one of them.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Barrow
Briefly summarize their skills: big mclargehuge, wields hammer, fight good, can do templar bullshit by request because he's 70% lyrium by volume
Venatori PC Name: Inpia Agger
Brief summary: A late-40's Soporati mercenary who has spent her life honing her combat skills, she has giant powerful arms and thighs that can (and probably have) crush(ed) a man's skull. She wields a morningstar and wears a spiked helmet that obscures her face apart from her eyes, the look in which belies her violent ferocity. Few know what she's like outside of missions, as she keeps a strictly professional presence when possible.
In her spare time, she manages messenger birds and has given them all special names.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Byerly
Briefly summarize their skills: Almost too Fereldan to function. (Hitching a ride with Riftwatch on his way to mainland Ferelden.)
Venatori PC Name: Caius Gregorius Junius Leto
Brief summary: Gregorius is the Thedas equivalent of a Bond villain: scheming, sadistic, taking pleasure in the physical and mental suffering of others. It is these qualities that have made him extremely well-suited to academia. Gregorius is now the Chair of the Department of Blight Studies at the University of Minrathous, a position he’s held for several years; although he has destroyed the psyches of several of his advisees, and has driven out several well-respected scholars, he continues to be tolerated because he publishes prolifically and gets cited often.
A deeply unpleasant person who no one likes but most people tolerate because of his “brilliance” (read: shameless self-promotion and self-mythologizing that have allowed him to become an academic superstar).
Genuinely a pretty powerful mage who desperately wants a chance to do some real torture and murder, which is why he’s doing this fieldwork.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Julius
Briefly summarize their skills: Natively Fereldan, Diplo division member, noted make nice-r
Venatori PC Name: Sergius Dalca
Brief summary: Sergius is a combat mage who is the Venatori equivalent of that guy who got through Yale on gentleman's Cs and then immediately got a job through his dad and has lazily failed upward ever since. He's solidly skilled at the combat part, and is mainly here to protect the people who are more ambitious and focused than he is. His father is a shrewd politician who has pinned most of his hopes on Sergius's elder brother, which is honestly more convenient than not in Sergius' view since it gives Sergius more latitude to not particularly pay attention to the big picture.
His last five performance reviews have had "meets expectations" in every category. He keeps himself in shape and trains a bit regularly because he feels like that's probably expected. He has a decent sense of humor, is a flirt but not a creep, and is quick to pay for everyone's drinks at the drop of a hat, so he's probably not bad to hang out with. He'd be lightly puzzled if anyone suggested he should have taken time to develop his own opinion about what the Venatori are up to; he got instructions to come here, so he's here. It's not that deep.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Vlast
Briefly summarize their skills: Giant fuck-off Qunari mage/illusionist that considers a greatsword to just be a big metal wand.
Venatori PC Name: Julian Agnelli
Brief summary: An Laetan enchanter in his late fifties from the Circle in Carastes. When he isn't bloviating about Tevinter history in lecture halls, he's dedicated a good chunk of his life to researching the Old Gods.
Hoping to climb the ranks through Tevinter's hierarchy, he's thrown his lot in with the Venatori. If all goes well with this venture, he may see some real political power down the line. But Julian isn't stupid; while his expertise is valuable, that doesn't mean he's not expendable.
Cautious, self-important, and willing to throw anyone under the bus for a scrap of power, he's not here to make friends, and only tentatively to make connections if they can get him what he wants.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Kostos
Briefly summarize their skills: Support mage with wisp pals, wartime scouting and guerrilla combat experience.
Venatori PC Name: Spuria Tapsenna
Brief summary: A scout. She's from an Altus family, but her utter absence of magical ability caused a lot of whispers about her parentage, and her mother wound up claiming she was the result of an affair because it was actually less embarrassing for everyone that way. She acquired her wilderness skills as an overburdened assistant/escort/protector/most-of-the-real-work-doer for a sibling whose fancy magical research required frequent travel and exploration. She takes very much after the father who won't claim her, who's also a moderately-ranking Venatori, and she's desperate to prove herself to him, Corypheus, literally anyone please, whether that means being the first to discover something important or bringing back a collection of Riftwatch members' hearts.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Evelyn (could also swap for Nell if it's a better fit, I've forgotten what it is RW is on Alamar to do)
Briefly summarize their skills: Research, archaeology, ruin exploration artifact-spotting/appraisal, some light thievery
Venatori PC Name: Callinicus Lusko
Brief summary: Academic from an altus house that has destroyed its own standing through several generations of prioritizing money over bloodlines/magical prowess/political power/anything that actually matters!! and not even enough money to make up for it, either. After proving to be a mage of only average ability (damn that diluted genepool), Cal threw himself into esoteric research of ancient magic in hopes of (re-)discovering something remarkable he can slap his name on. He leapt at the chance to join the Venatori, eager to climb ranks and sympathetic to the idea of wanting to restore glory days, and is determined to do whatever it takes to be the one to find the next Gate and earn his house back the prestige he deserves.

Riftwatch PC who's going on the trip: Clarisse La Rue
Briefly summarize their skills: Good combatant, just figured out how to shoot energy out of her hand
Venatori PC Name: Prisca Salvito
Brief summary: A scout in her late 20s with average magic ability. Prisca has no true ambition to climb ranks or improve her Laetan family's standing, though she of course swears otherwise; her one true pleasure in life is pitting people against each other, playing both sides, and watching the chaos erupt around her. Somehow, she always manages to emerge from the emotional rubble looking like an innocent party, so to those she's stationed with she seems like a nice enough person, friendly and practical and always available to listen to someone's problems. She does what's asked of her and does it exactly well enough to stay in the middle of the pack ability-wise, but she's a shrewder woman than her performance would imply. She's engaged to a man from a similarly ranked family. They've met a handful of times, but Prisca doesn't think about him too often. Out of side, out of mind.

Venatori PC Name: Lucretia Faurey
Brief summary: An overseer who is here to keep everybody in line and boss her colleagues around. She mainly communicates through passive aggressive
post-itcrystal messages. Strong mage w frighting primal magic abilities; much lightning very thunder. Has held her job for the last thirty odd years and nobody has tried to take it from her. She murdered the last guy who tried. Has rich, varied, fulfilling outside-work life nobody will ever know about
