SETTLE IN FUCKERS CAUSE YOU GON READ TODAY
Okay so five phases. Phase 1 is interrogation. Phase 2 is evidence-gathering. Phase 3 is making arrests. Phase 4 is the hitch in the plan. Phase 5 is wrapping shit up and getting back to Skyhold. In the unlikely event that that’s not totally all you need, here’s what’s going down:
First of all, we’re going to split this into two parts. Phases 1 and 2 are happening in part 1. Once we have those reasonably completed, I’ll either make a new plot post or add to this one and ping everyone on plurk/discord (in fact I have a discord server set up that I should be inviting everyone to after they put up a comment here — if you don’t get an invite poke me!) and then the threads for part 2 will go up after that.
PHASE ONE: Everyone talks to an NPC. There are nine of you and nine NPCs, thanks plot convenience. (Raylan will have an interrogation too, but I’m not going to…DM a conversation with myself so I’m just gonna post that as kind of a narrative.)
This will be a “choose your own adventure” style thread with four “say this or that” choices to make. You’ll put a number in the subject line to indicate which choice you made, then write a tag around that. I have these threads pre-written and ready to go! This means I will be able to keep up with the threads and get tags out quickly. Unfortunately, it means characters will necessarily be somewhat restricted in actions they can take, but there is more than one way for most of the threads to turn out. It also means sometimes the conversation may not flow perfectly, but hopefully we’ll be able to stay in the neighborhood. Every tag is roughly a short paragraph in length, so don't feel you have to stretch it very far. I will be available for questions if you don’t understand the choices offered or what the logic behind them was. (I can't guarantee I will remember as I’ve been writing them since mid-August but I can try.)
Here's the list of available NPCs, in elevator pitch format. You’ll claim who you want in your comment below!
Bo Cropper - Large and in charge. An older man, patriarch of the Cropper clan, will basically spend the conversation affably menacing you.
Johnny Cropper - Actually has a legitimate income stream, being the owner of the tavern most of the locals go to. He's not actively involved, but bartenders pick up all kinds of tidbits.
Ava Cropper - Wife of a Cropper. Doesn't know a whole lot, but totally willing to give the Inquisition anything she has. Even and especially if it puts her husband in jail. (This thread carries a content warning for discussion and evidence of domestic violence.)
Arlo Gibbs - Raylan's father. Raylan specifically begged off talking to him, but will give whoever takes him a few warnings. A mean old man, but his mind is starting to go, and he might let things slip. Bo's second-in-command.
Dewey Cox - A low-level lackey. Extremely stupid. Wants you to know he's a badass, but doesn't have it down yet. Spills everything he knows.
Daryl Cox - Dewey's cousin. A lot smarter and a lot more dangerous. Likes to play games with the law, including you. Bo and Arlo's third-in-command. (This thread carries a content warning for Daryl being an incredible skeeze who is not above making empty sexualized threats.)
Cutter - a mid-level lackey. Not exactly bright, but smart enough to shut his maker-damned mouth. Will spend the entire conversation threatening you openly.
Conall - A local farmer. Doesn't know anything about the criminals, but knows these hills and this land like the back of his hand.
Sister Winifred - not involved directly, but she's lived in this town her whole life, and generally sympathetic to the Inquisition. Might be able and willing to help.
PHASE TWO: Evidence gathering! I have a list of evidence. Characters can split up however they want, probably in twos and threes, to search a few different places. There will be some light DMing for these threads, telling you what you’re finding, and it will be based on how hard characters search. How much unique evidence is found will affect the score of the quest! We’re also going to talk about this below so we’re not screwed if this falls lower on priorities.
Also, if anyone wants to volunteer, a couple of team members will be kidnapped at this time. DRAMATIC GASP. CLIFFHANGER. ETC.
Notes on scoring: Only part one will affect scoring, unless someone goes really out of their way to be nice or to be an asshole in part 2. The highest possible score is 50, with anything over 40 being considered a perfect score because it would be a pretty awesome coincidence if everyone got all the possible bonus points. The higher the score, the more stabilized Crestwood will be and (assuming the mods choose to use this) the easier it will be to claim that keep and deal with the rift later, which the mods have said won’t be happening until December at the very earliest.
So for threads, I’m thinking a top-level for each phase, plus one for misc stuff associated with each part — part one’s misc being stuff like having drinks in the tavern, the ride to Crestwood, etc, whatever else y’all can think of. Under these top-levels will be any specific threads, with the plot-significant stuff started by me and y’all can start what you want, idk, I’m not ur real mom.

LET’S ESTABLISH
all the shit in this form cause i like forms
CRESTWOOD PLOT 2: WHY IS IT ALWAYS FUCKING RAINING BOOGALOO
Picking up right where we left off!
PHASE THREE: Arrest the bastards. The team now has solid evidence that a local consortium of criminals is smuggling slaves through Crestwood, including kidnapping locals and people passing through for more chattel — that’s what happened to your team members. There’s a cave system that’s being used as the current hideout, so the team goes on a raid. Exactly how well this goes will depend on how this plotting post turns out. The Inquisition will, however, free a chunk of slaves and arrest a few lackeys and one high-level dude no matter what happens. (Incidentally, the high-level dude is Raylan’s father.) Based on your score so far, they'll get about half to two-thirds of the perpetrators, totaling fifteen to twenty people. The characters who got kidnapped will also be freed at this point, having been in the slavers’ custody for all of three hours, and basically physically fine (minus maybe a black eye or a skinned knee here and there).
The team will also have the option of rounding up some others who weren’t in the cave, if they’re not happy with how many arrests have been made.
PHASE FOUR: When the Inquisition goes to turn the criminals in, it turns out that Mayor Shady has ghosted. You’re not investigating the keep or the lake, but the Inquisition’s presence spooked him, so he’s run away and left a very vaguely-worded note. The town guard won’t do anything without him.
Then things really go to shit. The lake has been quiet so far, but while y’all were running around, the rift was cooking in the lake, and now it’s opened and there are waves and waves of corpses coming at you. I HEARD YOU LIKE COMBAT, BRO 8D
Injuries will be discussed below. A few of the criminals will be hurt or killed during this battle, particularly any who have needed to be restrained. (Raylan's father dies at this point.)
PHASE FIVE: Injured and rain-soaked (presumably someone tempted fate by saying “it couldn’t get any worse”), the team makes it with the surviving criminals back to camp. The team is aware they need to move now, before the undead regroup, but the criminals are struggling and fighting and determined to make life hard for everyone, and this is even apart from striking the camp, etc. The only immediately apparent option is to take them to Skyhold to await judgment, but Raylan suggests another way.
It’s going to take a lot of time and resources to travel a group of uncooperative criminals all the way back through the mountains. It would not take a lot of time and resources to slit their throats and drop their bodies in the lake. Or leave them at the site of the battle. Or haul them into the dragon’s territory. Basically, Raylan is advocating summarily executing these criminals (who, he will remind everyone, are slavers and murderers) and going the hell home. The criminals have made it clear by this point that they intend to fight like cornered rats every step of the way. Wouldn’t it be better not to waste resources on these assholes that could go to better things?
Whatever the outcome, they make the choice and flee back to Skyhold.
Edit: ALSO feel free to keep tagging your part 1 threads if you're not done! The score can still be affected by part 1 up until I submit the report which will be at the end of the month so we have time.
LET’S ESTABLISH REDUX
