Unfortunately I don't think there's a feasible way for the entry point into the plot to be violent at this stage. The rumors would be along the same lines as what Ellana is hearing in terms of missing elves, wariness of new job prospects, he might have noticed there are absences that haven't necessarily been connected - families that moved away vs single people who people became worried about. Let me know how he would proceed!
