WHAT: Researching a cure for Tranquility.
WHEN: Missions threaded in August. Signups due by the 26th.

There are both missions (threaded) and tasks (non-threaded) available. Signups are in the comments.

We need your character to not tell anyone IC. Yet.
You can handwave this being explained: The last time anyone tried, it helped kick off an Annulment and the Rebellion.
SO: No Seekers or Templars at the moment, sorry.

QUICK NOTE:

Characters are doing this without Skyhold's approval, and there may be IC consequences for that. BUT!! We promise that no one’s character will get fired for our plot unless you want them to.

Missions

Missions should be threaded, but you can pick and choose the parts you find fun. Please list your signups in order of preference, and let us know if you want to be on more than one (if there are enough slots). More details will be provided after teams are put together, and K2 will GM where needed.

You can sign up for both missions and tasks.

SPIRITED DEBATE

The variety of spirit chosen seems to impact the emotions it reintroduces. Select a suitable spirit, then enter the Fade to deal with it directly. Watch out for demons, angst, and angst demons. Possibly your own.

Who: 2-4 people.

GARDEN OF EATIN

The Nadashin Marshes of Orlais are among the most remote and inhospitable of southern Thedas’ many bogs. Riddled by fog, wyverns, and frequent rebellions, they’re also home to a rare species of flower, prized for its ability — when prepared — to induce a deep, waking trance. Acquire some, either by traveling to the Marshes, or trading for it on the black market.

Who: 1-3 people.
Official Cover: The Inquisition would like to get its hands on another useful poison.

RADAMANT

The Tranquil mage Pharamond researched a cure in Adamant Fortress, destroyed by Inquisition almost two years ago. But the Fade is slow to forget, and scouts stationed in the area have reported lingering disturbances in the Veil. Investigate these, and search for any evidence of the ritual conducted there.

Who: 2-4 people.

GO ASK YOUR MOTHER

Pharamond's research was supposedly commissioned by Divine Justinia. Find proof. Witnesses among mages, templars, and Chantry officials may yet survive, and records of action by past Divines are kept in a Chantry archives in Val Royeaux. However you decide to prove it, try not to destroy the Inquisition’s diplomatic relations while you’re at it.

Who: 2-4 people.

Tasks

Tasks don’t need to be threaded, they’re just flavour you can RP with if you want. Your characters don’t need to be members of a given division to sign up for that task (it was just an easy way to group skills). Please list your signups in order of preference, and let us know if you want to be on more than one.

You can sign up for both missions and tasks.

DIPLOMACY

Vet possible contacts within and outside the Rebellion for their reliability, should the team later decide to spread news of a cure.

Search for records of survivors from Adamant, or of those who knew them.

SCOUTING

Examine routes through the Western Approach, Marshes, and Val Royeaux with an eye to assisting the missions there.

Acquire lyrium for entry to the Fade, legally or otherwise.

RESEARCH

Work with Casimir to research different binding runes.

Experiment with methods of preserving and cultivating the Marshes herb outside of its native habitat.

FORCES

Practice methods of disabling an abomination, if necessary.

Buy, borrow, build, or steal a summoning font and other necessary magical components.

NOTES: I'll be on hiatus in August, so I'd like to use this as one excuse why Inessa's unavailable as she'd devote a great deal of time to it. If this isn't acceptable, ignore this.

Casimir will be in the background hitting things with a hammer, or however runes are actually made.

You can assume that some types of binding runes are more effective than others, but be careful making up detail on this one, and be sure to run things through the mod contact if necessary. Some methods that they might (but don't have to!!) use to research include:

Books obtained in or outside the Imperium, Circles, Inquisition, etc

Speaking to other mages in or outside the Inquisition

Altering existing glyphs or runes they’ve seen

Testing their efficacy with little things like wisps

Studying what can disrupt or destroy the runes

Never gonna rune around and desert you.

Senior Enchanter August Westwood Elliot Brimsey Coombes, the Third. Coombes is renowned for his impressive beard, and fearsome visage, both of which have made him immensely popular in his hometown. Investigation reveals that he's actually a prize-winning goat.

Former Val Royan noble, Lay Sister Marian the Smaller (of no relation to Lay Sister Marian the Larger, with whom she eloped). Formerly outspoken critics of Tranquility, they've become disillusioned by the civilian toll of the war. While they don't believe in using the Rite, they also don't believe that mages should use their magic at all. Mind over matter. Just say no.

"Enchanter" Wyllas Wyllasmus, a very wealthy non-mage, who styles himself after them and roams about in elaborate robes. Considered an eccentric by… everyone, but indulged by the rebels crashing his guest house, Wyllas is extremely enthusiastic about spells and sleight of hand. He will attempt multiple card tricks, and grow very embarrassed whenever he drops the deck. While most of his companions don’t seem to be serious people, one has been selling Wyllasmus' assets and investing them into printing presses for the better part of a year.

Chester Clarkin, the fourteen-year-old leader of a group of apprentices, who fled as a group after their adult protectors were killed in the Rebellion's early days. They've gotten by since on a combination of scavenging, charity, and occasional highway robbery. Several have gone to the noose after wearing out their local welcome, but they continue to refuse any offers of permanent integration. They vote on new names each week, and remarkably, none have yet been possessed. Chester wears a homemade feather cape (it's sort of gross). His voice is extremely squeaky.

Some perfectly normal mages and sympathizers. Thank god.

Feel free to make up any NPCs you like, provided that they comply with the plot of Asunder (in which a single human woman was the only direct survivor). These NPCs can (but don't have to!!) include:

The brother of one the Fortress' midwives. He’s made the records in Velun by being hanged for desertion; his young widow is extremely bitter, and will try to sell them the letters. She claims that they were transcribed by a Chantry brother, who volunteers his time for several of the largely-illiterate local villages. It's clear the brother doesn't think much of the Inquisition, but he remembers another family with kin in the Approach, and promises to ask about relatives while on his rounds.

An elven University student researching contemporary regional folklore. One story from the Hissing Wastes describes a young boy’s corpse, white as a sheet and trailing always just behind travelers. He reaches, and reaches out for them, until the moment that they turn to look. The scholar hypothesizes this might be a functional metaphor for the ever-present threat of Darkspawn from the Abyssal Rift. She can’t meet in person, but will exchange a series of letters, in which it eventually becomes clear that she finds Julius a very eligible prospect.

A templar in care of the Val Chevin Chantry. He claims to have been sent to Adamant to assist someone who was either his Captain, or a Seeker. He was relieved when they left again, without violence. It's unclear how accurate any of this is: The man’s very confused. He smiles a lot at Adalia, and calls her Lea.

A caravan traveler who describes a young woman approaching his camp several years ago, seeming terrified. They took her as far as the nearest outpost, where she vanished. Now he would really, really, really like to sell the Inquisition these decorative pots.

An astonishingly thorough census of the Fortress circa 9:35, which will turn out to be forged only after it’s purchased — at some expense — from a minor Val Royan official with gambling debts. Any attempts at exacting revenge/a refund will be blocked by the smiling masks and rapidly closing ranks of Orlesian bureaucracy.

The emphasis of these will be on safety, rather than silence; Christine will be asked to send her findings to Kostos (feel free to handwave this) so that the Scouting Division can make broader use of them. Some things she might (but doesn't have to) try include:

Traveling there herself (dangerous remote locations, so maybe leave mom in the village)

Speaking to traders and other local contacts

Bribing or purchasing her way into better maps

Acquiring information on seasonal conditions, current conflicts in the area, local criminal groups, or other events that would complicate travel
