CHARACTER
Name: Ilias Fabria
Info Page/App: app / shamefully unfinished info page
Who They Are: A tired workaholic death mage. Ilias is a devout member of the Mortalitasi order, collected, professional, and a low-key disaster in his personal life, but whatever, who needs a personal life when everyone you love is dead. Consider instead: more work. He's not a social butterfly, but he's usually the one tasked with talking grieving families through the whole Nevarran death ritual thing, so he's a good listener, and has that Will Graham esq capacity to be Fine with things other people might find upsetting. Like viscera!
Where They've Been: Nevarra City, mostly! He’s traveled some within Nevarra but not very much outside it, except maybe as a controversial guest lecturer or something. He spent the mage rebellion having a very contained breakdown and then went back to playing by the rules.
What They Want: To help restore the Veil and take care of spirits and keep himself busy enough to never have to think about his mistakes. His grandmother would like him to not get assassinated when Nevarra's succession crisis explodes.
Plot & CR Desires: I'm here for spooky death cult stuff and spirit nonsense and ambiguously conservative mage politics.
Anything Else: Bring me your necromancers. No really, I’m brewing us up a plot, so come here and let me touch all your faces while i try to figure out deets.

For past CR purposes, Kostos was in Nevarra City when he was 15–19, so when Ilias was 18-22! He was apprenticing with the Mortalitasi but then disappeared overnight because his twin had tried to kill King Pentaghast. Annnd he was kind of quiet and sullen, also competitive, thought he was kind of a hot shot because the spirit medium thing made a lot of spirit stuff Just Work for him, didn’t have m/any friends, was a baby Loyalist who meant to follow the rules but also got into a couple of fist fights and a few people’s robes, etc.
So my guess is they wouldn’t have been close and might actually have not liked each other at all, especially since Kostos could easily have taken Ilias’ Mortalitasi Legacy Status personally and wanted to outdo him, but !! unsure.

I think he'd have been pretty ???? about Kostos in general, b/c he's not competitive at all and believed Working Hard Gets You Far Enough (while also hugely benefiting from his family name), like maybe stop being such a hotshot and just do your work and it'll be fine, there's enough mummies for everyone!! But he'd have wholesale avoided any confrontation about it and vis-a-vis probably avoided Kostos a bit, which might've just made him seem more stuck up.
I'd been vaguely assuming Mortalitasi go live el...swhere, like closer to the necropolis at some point after harrowing?? In which case they might've been outside each other's orbits during their respective big life dramas? But there would certainly have been rumors about Ilias's cousin's death and his ex's abrupt transfer and the fact that Ilias went nigh on catatonic for a bit when he was 20ish. And I assume he'd have heard about Kostos disappearing and Nikos trying to kill the king, wtf dude. Iiiif they were around each other at all in between those two events Ilias would have been a hot mess of bad decision coping mechanisms, one of which could have been Kostos, but it's equally possible they just didn't reconnect. Until now.

I’ve said places that Kostos got harrowed earlier than normal and more as a prerequisite to Mortalitasi training than as a capstone, but I’m totes fine with that being unusual—it was more “this kid is potentially a timebomb and how the heck do spirit mediums even work, let’s make sure he isn’t going to embarrass us in this specific way before we get in too deep” than anything good, and he knew it, so he could have like quadruply resented Ilias later when people were starry eyed.
And in any case he never made it to full-fledged Mortalitasi so they wouldn’t have been seeing much of each other after Ilias left—I think real Mortalitasi actually live in the Necropolis? or immediately adjacent maybe? since Cassandra and her brother were raised by their uncle there... anyway your theory makes sense. But if you want a witness to some of Ilias’ bad decisions Kostos could have come on field trips as part of apprenticing and been like “oh wow I like you way better as a disaster,” and I’ve also said places that he didn’t really sleep with men until he went to Orlais, since Orlais is The Most Cool with it, but they could totally have made out, and then we could both have “in the a literal necropolis” as an answer for “what’s the weirdest place your character has made out with anyone” memes.

anyway: /stamp of approval, yes that all makes sense!! im glad we can conspire to win "weirdest makeout place" and lose IC "never have i ever" to some cruel soul.

ANYWAY, apparent past CR overlap: casimir was in NC from age 10 to 24, at which point he was very abruptly transferred to the marches, and is about two years older than ilias. he had a kind of alarming demeanour and a research focus to spirits possessing things that aren’t corpses. because necromancy is like, so passe *
* if you don’t have any family connections and are super jealous of people who do
BUT would have probably had a million questions about comparative theory if ilias made the mistake of standing still long enough. i'm down for them knowing each other in any capacity, whether it's my pal or definitely not my pal or just i guess we went to wizard high school together? i sort of recognize your name
no subject
ON WHICH NOTE uh, depending on how much drama you feel like having on hand, Casimir might also have been familiar with Ilias's ex?? who I need to name. he was a mage with some similarly alarming research interests, though probably a more cautious monster, who was around Nevarra City for a year or so before getting abruptly transferred.
Either way: perhaps friends, perhaps Ilias abruptly cut off contact after his cousin's death, and then Cas was transferred?? And now: this.

i'm totally down for him having known bf mcsociopath, if he wasn't too overtly frightening or monstrous they could've def gotten along (from casimir's pov).
he would've had some Feels about ilias withdrawing from contact, and probably wrote a few letters detailing whatever benign stuff with mutual acquaintances before eventually giving up. too good for us now huh!! that's definitely what this is and not secret trauma
no subject
And hey now seems like a great time to waltz back in 10 years late and talk about Casimir's feelings right?? On which note: would Ilias have heard about the whole Tranquility thing or is that going to be a fun surprise.
no subject
and fun surprise! someone hypocritically didn't maintain contact with nevarra after leaving for hasmal. there would've been some talk around the possibility when he was harrowed, as it was kind of iffy whether he'd pass, but he did and seemingly would've been in the clear.

In terms of future necromancy plots, MJ had some rad ideas I want to organize into a player plot to have the necromancers contribute to the upcoming Ghislain battle somehow! Once I get my thoughts together I'll probably post something on the OOC comm so we can brainstorm how best to go about it.

Audra never attended the Nevarran Circle but her mentor in Necromancy was from Nevarra, and she's written papers which have been circulated about necromancy, and she's spent some time in Nevarra City post-mage uprising, so it's possible for their paths to have crossed.
She's probably the least prickly of all the Inquisition necromancers.

And it sounds like he'd be aware of her professionally! Ilias hasn't published much but he definitely reads papers on necromancy like a nerd. Since the mage rebellion, he did have a period of time where he was MIA, and he's been a bit off since then, but if Audra was in Nevarra City within the last 2-3 years perhaps they had tea or were trapped at a some kind of awkward necromancer social function together.
MORE GENERALLY the reason I'm collecting every necromancer is b/c MJ passed me a player plot baton that I'm working on getting rolling, to have the necromancers contribute to the upcoming battle for Ghislain somehow! So keep an eye out for an OOC post or something soonish to brainstorm how.

Sidony has lived in Nevarra City almost all her life and has had a huge, huge thing for the Mortalitasi - she wanted to be one ever since she was very little but when she discovered she did not have magic it all went to shit. She's been hugely focussed on becoming a physician/surgeon and (like we said on plurk!) maybe she spent some time hanging around with him! She'd have been a little bit nosey and very keen to get what she wants (and flirty when she thought it would get her what she wanted).
If you're still interested in the potential marriage plot situation we can work on that too c: They can talk about dead things together, too, and have that familiarity from before. He'd probably be aware that there is no way her parents would let her be here in Kirkwall so it's a little bit likely that she, uh. Ran away.
Hi, friend.

For sake of having things to RP about actually, maybe we should say Ilias put a frustratingly early stop to their meetings at some point? like maybe he was uncertain about her motives or w/e, and we could RP them getting to know each other a little better, if that sounds good to you?
and i am definitely still interested in a potential marriage plot! maybe once they're settled and/or once the political situation in Nevarra develops a little further, that seems like it could be a good catalyst. in the meantime i'm slowly coming at your network post, b/c yeah he can't imagine her parents letting her join the Inquisition, of all things.

SHE WOULD HAVE HATED THAT and will be very sour!!! but that works for me! knowing each other and her being a pain in his ass works as a good thing going forward c:
