That might work! But it's super important that everyone who goes accept the evidence that they're dead and report back to everyone else at home that they're dead. If some people from the rescue say they're dead and others insist they might not be and try to convince people to keep trying, and all of that, it could mess up the whole "giving up and thinking they're dead and having a memorial service" aspect.
