BARROW, LAURA, BASTIEN and MARCUS will be sent off with the phylactery to trace the second mage and discover what all the fuss is about, with strict instructions to practice an abundance of caution. Given the irregular nature of the correspondence discovered on the dead mage in the Gallows, Riftwatch's agents may be walking into some kind of trap.

In combination with her last known whereabouts, a description of her partner (before he got quite so abominable), the phylactery, and Laura's excellent bloodhound instincts, Riftwatch will be able to successfully discover the second mage traveling West into Nevarra in the company of two Templars and a young girl of roughly five who must be her daughter. She tied at the hands and likely under the effects of mage bane.

If the group bothers to ask questions instead of shooting first, they can discover (by force or persuasion) that the captive mage and her husband are/were "dangerous criminals" in addition to being apostates. Happily, ("air quotes") it seems they've all arrived at a solution. In exchange for pardons and the guarantee that her daughter will be cared for, she will be joining the Inquistion's mages at the Orlesian frontlines and fight for the duration of the war. The offer would have been available to her husband as well if he hadn't slipped away, but the Templars can't guarantee it will be extended if he shows up again to see his family (which his wife seems very confident of).
    Big questions:
  • 1) Do you do anything to disguise yourselves given the whole 'abundance of caution' instruction? (OOC note: please keep in mind that while this may help you in this encounter, it may not stop information regarding Riftwatch's involvement getting back to the Chantry via other channels.)
  • 2) Are you bothering to ask questions first? If so, are you using force or charm? Any specific asks in addition to the above info?
  • 3) Do you reveal that you're carrying her phylactery?
  • 4) Do you reveal the fate of her husband?
  • 5) Do you attempt to free the captured mage? If so, how/how far are you willing to go?

Please work together to come up with a plan that addresses these questions in part or in full and turn it in by no later than July, 31st (if you turn it in earlier, I won't be mad about it). It's ok if you include additional or fewer details (e.x. if you decide to reveal the correspondence, etc.) as they may net you additional modifiers when it comes time to roll dice..

Each question has its own grading metric with a potential to add or subtract dice from the pool depending on where your plan falls within the metric. I'll reveal those metrics/potential modifiers once you get your plan to me to see what bonuses or threats you've earned. Answers to certain questions may negate the need for other questions, but barring that occurrence each question will get its own (x)d6 dice roll. Once the rubric is revealed, I'll bore you all with a few more mechanical details but I'm hoping this will allow for the vibe of flexible negotiations without bogging anyone down with extended NPCing or an unknown resolution to the conflict.
