[player plot] from riftwatch with love

Hi Fade Rift. It's me, Abby. I come bearing plot.
WHAT'S GOING ON: A quiet day in the Gallows is interrupted when a mage shows up claiming to have been betrayed by Riftwatch, who then promptly becomes an abomination and goes on a rage-fueled rampage.
Discovered on his body (or you know, whatever. rip) will be correspondence ostensibly by "Riftwatch" offering him and his wife protection, along with a still-active phylactery. A team will be dispatched with the phylactery to track down a second mage and discover her in the custody of Templars.
Drama! Adventure! Some spy stuff!
HOW WE'RE DOING IT: Part One (abomination time in the Gallows) will be an open event log for anyone who wants to indulge in some abomination-related drama. I'll be RNGing who gets to strike the killing blow (see below for sign-ups), but feel free to assume you'll be able to use this space to get hurt/help your friends/put out fires/whatever. If you don't care about finishing off the abomination, no need to sign up; feel free to just show up for a bad time.
Part Two will involve a small group of 2-4 player characters tracking down the second mage/dealing with Templar shenanigans. Signups for this will close on 7/25 and rng'd if there's more interest than there are slots. At this point, I'll send everyone involved a little questionnaire, nail down the specifics, and do some dice rolls (the mechanics of which will be explained in more detail with the questionnaire) to determine the outcome. I'll post a log for this, but will not be NPCing and someone involved in the investigation will have to file a report for it, so please be prepared for a little leg work if you want in on Part Two.
WHO'S IN TROUBLE: Part one will be open to everyone. Part two will ostensibly be Official Riftwatch Business, but ultimately is open to anyone who feels like tracking a mage down as no one will have an exact picture of what they'll be walking into when they get to Lady Mage. Scouting/Forces/Diplomacy types seem like the obvious go to, but if you've got a nerd who seems like a good fit for x y z reason then have at it.
SO WHEN ARE WE DOING THIS: Sign-ups for dealing the killing blow on the abomination will close on 7/31.
Sign-ups for Part 2 are open from now until 7/25, at which point participants will be RNG'd (max 4) and with a questionnaire/dice roll mechanic info distributed to the team to go over and come up with a game plan. I'll need the game plan by 7/31.
Open log for Part 1 will go up on 8/1. Closed log for Part 2 will go up on 8/8.
SIGNUPS: Kill an Abomination
I'm not making anyone pre-plan how they do the thing. My only stipulation is that you have to let the abomination run roughshod through the Gallows for a bit - no standing up and striking it down before it does any damage. If your character is the type to be instantly victorious, make sure they have to run down 10 flights of stairs to get to where they can save the day so it gives everyone a little time for drama.

Southey
(His "killing blow" would have to be a tap after other people did all the work [which he would then milk for everything it was worth] so feel free to exclude him if that is not in the spirit of what you want!)
withdrawing from consideration because I anticipated having him established elsewhere by now and do not and it would be weird to start with this!!

SIGNUPS: Hunt a Mage
signing up for this too, fight me
Strengths: literal Templar and all that that entails
Weaknesses: wishes people didn't know he was a Templar, takes almost nothing seriously
maybe I will
In combination with her last known whereabouts, a description of her partner (before he got quite so abominable), the phylactery, and Laura's excellent bloodhound instincts, Riftwatch will be able to successfully discover the second mage traveling West into Nevarra in the company of two Templars and a young girl of roughly five who must be her daughter. She tied at the hands and likely under the effects of mage bane.
If the group bothers to ask questions instead of shooting first, they can discover (by force or persuasion) that the captive mage and her husband are/were "dangerous criminals" in addition to being apostates. Happily, ("air quotes") it seems they've all arrived at a solution. In exchange for pardons and the guarantee that her daughter will be cared for, she will be joining the Inquistion's mages at the Orlesian frontlines and fight for the duration of the war. The offer would have been available to her husband as well if he hadn't slipped away, but the Templars can't guarantee it will be extended if he shows up again to see his family (which his wife seems very confident of).
Big questions:
- 1) Do you do anything to disguise yourselves given the whole 'abundance of caution' instruction? (OOC note: please keep in mind that while this may help you in this encounter, it may not stop information regarding Riftwatch's involvement getting back to the Chantry via other channels.)
- 2) Are you bothering to ask questions first? If so, are you using force or charm? Any specific asks in addition to the above info?
- 3) Do you reveal that you're carrying her phylactery?
- 4) Do you reveal the fate of her husband?
- 5) Do you attempt to free the captured mage? If so, how/how far are you willing to go?
Please work together to come up with a plan that addresses these questions in part or in full and turn it in by no later than July, 31st (if you turn it in earlier, I won't be mad about it). It's ok if you include additional or fewer details (e.x. if you decide to reveal the correspondence, etc.) as they may net you additional modifiers when it comes time to roll dice..
Each question has its own grading metric with a potential to add or subtract dice from the pool depending on where your plan falls within the metric. I'll reveal those metrics/potential modifiers once you get your plan to me to see what bonuses or threats you've earned. Answers to certain questions may negate the need for other questions, but barring that occurrence each question will get its own (x)d6 dice roll. Once the rubric is revealed, I'll bore you all with a few more mechanical details but I'm hoping this will allow for the vibe of flexible negotiations without bogging anyone down with extended NPCing or an unknown resolution to the conflict.

Strengths: Diplomatic, disinterested party in the mage v Templar debate and not likely to tolerate any shenanigans from everyone else (which may be a drawback from an OOC perspective idk don't let me ruin fun), not as squishy as he looks.
Weaknesses: Almost as squishy as he looks.

Strengths: a mage -- so like magic but would also "diplomatically" advocate for reasoning with other mages, out to help rescue
Weaknesses: a mage -- so like very sympathetic to other mages and their mage problems, and very anti templar. to that end OBVIOUSLY he's a known mage sympathizer, might destroy the phylactery and freak on the templars.... so if he gets passed over, he'll be mad but I would understand. I'm not an unreasonable teen

Strengths: he would volunteer to come along to appeal to the mage in question, if possible. he is relatively rational, and obviously, does magic.
Weaknesses: he is potentially a problem, for obvious reasons, and depending on factors such as the response of the Templars and the makeup of the team, he could be an obstacle towards peaceful resolution or an outcome where the mage is left in Templar custody. we can work it out in the narrative if he is picked, including forcing him to just observe how Riftwatch chooses to handle this thing, but i am fine with dipping out if needed.
