WORK STUFF!

PROJECTS ANNOUNCEMENT

First off, we want to announce that we're bringing back project membership. We hope it will renew some interest in and focus on projects and help players/characters feel more engaged with projects again, with a better sense of how they fit, what they're doing, and who they're working with. So effective immediately, characters can once again choose to become members of one or more of Riftwatch's projects. More information about what this means, project overviews, and reasonable limitations (please don't join more than 2 per character max) is available here.

How do you sign up? Go to the relevant Project wiki page and add your character to the Personnel list you'll find there. If you're not sure what to put in the 'Focus' section yet, that's fine! You can always change it later (and the next section of this post might help figure it out). That's it! Signing up on the wiki adds your character to the official membership list for that project; we won't be tracking this information elsewhere.

As a reminder, to join the wiki you just create a free wikidot account and then use the password available on the Contact page to join.

QUESTIONNAIRE

This is a Riftwatch work questionnaire! (It's totally optional, we just didn't put it on the meme comm because we wanted to announce project stuff too.) It's meant to encourage everyone to work through the available information about their characters' jobs, nail down what characters do all day and then share it with the class and see where they might overlap with others. You're free to tag around if you want to use people's answers to handwave interactions or plan CR, but we're also posting a banter meme geared toward developing CR with the people your character works with day to day.

Here are some resources to help you figure out your answers:

  • A general overview of how Riftwatch and its work is organized. We've added a lot to this page in the last few days.
  • Division pages, which each have a rundown of division priorities and the types of daily/routine work characters would be doing in the background.
  • Project pages, which have an overview of what each project is focused on, plus the lists where you can sign up to be a member.
  • The Jobs board, a list of claimable small tasks of the sort Riftwatch members would be doing regularly. (If you don't want to claim one now, you can still use it as more inspiration for the general kinds of things your characters might be doing.)
  • A roster of current Riftwatch leaders.
  • The Housing sheet, showing division workroom desk assignments, offices assignments, and other shared Gallows spaces.

The Titular Questionnaire

Player:
Character:
Division:
Leadership Role: If any! You can delete this if your character doesn't have one.

Routine: Does your character spend a lot of time at their desk? Are they more frequently out in the field and/or working elsewhere in the Gallows, such as the infirmary or armory or on the training grounds? What kind of hours do they keep?

Demeanor: Are they chatty? Do they like to collaborate and get other people's input on what they're working on, or do they keep to themselves? Does it annoy them if other people make noise in their vicinity? Do they have any annoying habits people at neighboring desks might notice?

Space: What does their desk or office look like? Neat vs messy, things on the surface, drawers locked or accessible, any decor, completely untouched and gathering dust, etc.

Typical Division Work: What kind of work do they routinely do? What do they try to avoid when they can? If you don't know or need inspiration, check the page for your character's division for a list of routine work. These are the kinds of tasks we handwave everyone is doing in the background all the time. (For Division Heads, it is fine for the answer to this to just be Management! But they can also routinely take on some other tasks themselves instead of delegating, if you want.)

Project(s): Is your character involved in any projects? Or—since we're revamping the projects and trying to make people participate more in the future—would they like to be involved with any going forward? Do they have any skills relevant to the project's work?

Other Work: What kind of work does your character do outside their division? While division work and any formal IC leadership role they have will fill up the bulk of your character's time, Riftwatch is a small organization in a big fortress, so it's common (but not required) for people to pitch in on things like caring for the griffons or horses, translating rarer languages for any division in need, maintaining armor and weaponry, taking shifts in the guard rotation, working in the herb gardens, etc.

Good For: Pick 1-3 things your character might be known among Riftwatch for being useful for, like knowing where every file is, being able to translate documents, lifting heavy objects, being good with the horses, having a hook-up for a particular good or service, whatever. Things that their colleagues would know to say "go ask X" about if someone needed the thing done.

Bad For: Pick 1-3 things your character would be known to be bad at, might need assistance with, or could use more training on. These can be things from the routine division work lists that your character doesn't know how to do yet, or they can be smaller/sillier.

Leadership Style: How do they handle leading? How hands-on are they? Is their attitude more commanding or collaborative? This question isn't only for official IC leaders; any character could be put in charge of a team for a one-off mission or short-term project.

Subordinate Style: How well does your character take orders (either in general or from their division head specifically, if you've interacted enough to know)? Do they check in with their superiors frequently with updates or questions, or do they prefer to be left alone with their assignments until they're done? Would they be perceived to have an attitude or nah? (Division Head players can remove this question, since they do not have bosses, unless it's fun for you to answer in a hypothetical way.)

Player: Charlie
Character: Ellie
Division: Scouting

Routine: Ellie's on the field as much as possible, often away from the Gallows and either out in the city or working Scouting missions, recon and delivering messages. When she's in the Gallows she's mostly around at night or the wee predawn hours (not because she gets up early, but because she doesn't sleep much) either prowling the library, the stables or the griffon tower. She spends very little time at her desk unless she's drafting maps.

Demeanor: Ellie is generally withdrawn and guarded around strangers, but if you get her talking it's obvious she's not shy. She's just got a lot going on in her own head. She's decisive and often works alone, but gets chatty and excited when she's on the subject of something she likes. She likes listening to other people more than she likes talking about herself.

Space: Ellie's space is organized chaos, and though she's rarely there, things move around enough. She doesn't leave too many personal items at her desk but a shiny rock or interesting book might show up. She doesn't lock anything up at her desk because it's not where she keeps the good shit.

Typical Division Work: Ellie is quick to take work that involves flying, ranging afar, cartography, and combat. Clearing bandits, demons and other pests and scouting through enemy territory are her bread and butter. She steers clear of most socially-oriented projects, especially the ones involving disguise or social infiltration.

Project(s): N/A for now.

Other Work: Ellie mostly pitches in with the griffons and the stables, and some minor crafting. She'll fletch arrows and fetch ingredients and herbs, do some minor lifting, and has been known to pitch in with food prep or pick up a guard shift, especially overnight.

Good For: Ellie's good with all the mount-type critters and is developing a good head for cartography and reference drawings. She's also very great at tailing a mark, if someone needs that.

Bad For: Any heavy melee, heavy lifting, or armory assistance. Ellie knows fuck-all about armor. She's also still woefully behind at reading/writing Thedosian languages, so she's not great at coding/decoding.

Leadership Style: Ellie prefers not to lead, but will step up reluctantly if needed. She works best in small groups or in partnerships, and is comfortable working alone. She's not great at coordinating people outside of combat settings, and gets frustrated with them easily.

Subordinate Style: If the mission is something Ellie believes in, she's a set-it-and-forget-it piece on the board. She doesn't need anyone to oversee her work. If she doesn't trust the person she's working for or with she'll make quiet judgment calls on her own and may outright disobey. If she trusts you, you'll have a ride-or-die you can ask anything of, and she'll tell you to your face when you're a dumbass.

Yseult

[personal profile] hassaran 2021-10-20 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Yseult
Division: Scouting
Leadership Role: Scouting Division Head

Routine: Works long hours, usually starting around dawn and often working into the night. In her office more than not, usually available between breakfast and an hour or two after dinner. (Before/after that she's still often working, but likely to lock the door to discourage non-urgent drop-ins.) Occasionally disappears for a day or a week here or there to meet with contacts in Kirkwall or do some spying elsewhere. Doesn't really take whole days off.

Demeanor: Sort of innately aloof, but isn't actually unfriendly just very focused on work and very private about herself. People who drop in with more or less work-related requests/questions/information/ideas/etc. will find her willing to listen and discuss so long as what they're bringing her isn't a deliberate waste of her time or very dumb/lazy. Ignores noise especially if it seems intentionally designed to annoy.

Space: Her office is functional, comfortable, and lowkey nice design-wise. Nothing flashy, but also not sparse or utilitarian. Think medieval Pottery Barn. Well lit, nice rugs, a comfortable seating area at the back of the room, landscape paintings, a plant or two, books on the shelves that are only 90% work-useful, a very limited number of knick-knacks. Palette is in the blue/teal/grey/sand sort of area. She keeps it neat, but not fanatically. There are always maps on the map table, orderly stacks of papers on the desk, the occasional mug or book left out. Desk and file cabinets have locks. (They also have secret compartments. Possibly some traps. If you're planning to try to poke around please let me know OOC!)

Typical Division Work: Management, especially since she's refused to get an assistant. Reads a ridiculous number of reports herself. Still does spy stuff, keeping in touch with a number of agents around Thedas, just prefers to work alone so it's generally off-screen. Avoids as much as possible the actual "scout" parts of scouting that involve wilderness tracking/recon type stuff, unless they can be done from griffonback.

Project(s): Keeps close tabs on Jeshavis.

Other Work: Nnnnone. She's available to do translating if urgently needed, and helps care for her own horse and griffon (Pockets!). Willing to do various kinds of scouting-related training on request. Otherwise, plate is full.

Good For: Figuring out how to get into anywhere, identifying accents, a constant supply of nice but not uncomfortably fancy alcohol.

Bad For: Tracking, sympathy for interpersonal drama, manual labor. One of the few pluses of leadership is not having to carry things, ok.

Leadership Style: Very hands on in the sense that she wants to be kept informed and still doesn't love delegating work she feels like she could just do herself, but has gotten over that a bit after several years in this job. Not micromanage-y once someone's demonstrated they're reasonably reliable or at least deserve the benefit of the doubt. Not precious about authority, happy to listen to people with relevant knowledge/experience. Open to letting people without experience learn/prove themselves by doing, but not eager to send people into situations they're not at least somewhat ready to handle without making sure they have backup. Very matter-of-fact and pragmatic about the dangers and less-pleasant aspects of Scouting's work, but not trying to throw her agents' lives away and keen to avoid impact to uninvolved civilians wherever possible.

Understands that shit happens in the field, so generally allows teams leeway to adjust as needed and is patient with setbacks and failures as long as everybody's making a good faith effort (which includes in the moment, but also in terms of trying to train and improve in between missions). Exceptions include disobeying direct orders without a very good explanation, disregard for collateral damage, and putting some other agenda or personal business ahead of Riftwatch's goals. Expects people to do a lot of work, but it's no more than she does herself.

Subordinate Style: Honestly excellent at taking orders as long as she trusts the people giving them and what they're working toward. Alas, nobody here qualifies.

Kate Bishop

[personal profile] stickandstring 2021-10-20 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Cass
Character: Kate Bishop
Division: Forces

Routine: Hours on the long side of normalish, and can vary significantly. Sometimes seems like a morning person, other times really not. What's a sleep schedule?? Still settling in and as a Warden used to working for herself without anyone to answer to, so no real set routine just yet. Uses the Gallows workspaces but not on a reliable schedule. Out and about more than not.

Demeanor: Friendly, out-going, but not a chatterbox. Will pipe up and ask questions or join conversations in progress, make comments on things, etc. but not going to randomly talk someone's ear off if they seem like they're trying to focus and occasionally puts her head down and focuses on things herself. Noise in the vicinity is ok, but if it's excessively loud or gross or continues she will eventually say something. Definitely a pen-tapper, knee-jiggler.

Space: Messy (but not dirty) and not to a ridiculous degree, just a "too busy to care about this I'll get around to tidying it up later" degree. Empty coffee cup is omnipresent, somehow there are already mug-rings on the desk top. Decor includes a number of items in various shades of purple, a little bobblehead dog, and some random arrows sticking out of a drawer.

Typical Division Work: Guard duty shifts, helping test ranged weaponry. Out in the field as much as possible, volunteers for all sorts of guard duty jobs, whether for Riftwatch agents, supply shipments, or doing favors for Riftwatch's friends and allies. Up for more more direct-combat assignments, too. Will complain about paperwork/desk work a normal amount, more to colleagues in a "can you believe this boring stuff we all have to do together?" way than to superiors. May drag her heels or lose track of non-essential things, but she'll get it done eventually and make sure it's sufficient to be useful, though the tone can be more informal and irreverent at times than may be ideal. Important reports are clear and prompt. (She's pretty good at knowing the difference.)

Project(s): Sashamiri. As a Warden she's obviously interested in all this red lyrium darkspawn/tainted lyrium/talking ancient magister nonsense.

Other Work: Helps out with the refugee situation, and with the scouting efforts to keep an eye on enemy movements in the Marches/provide early warning so Forces can help protect against raids. Getting to know the griffons, but that's not really work. Happy to offer archery tips. Warden business is kind of ???? at the moment, but she's there to help with darkspawn stuff as needed. Also keeps an ear out for local issues and may play vigilante if necessary.

Good For: Fun facts about Kirkwall, extra hands to help if someone's in danger, coffee

Bad For: Luck, Hightown, letting things go without comment

Leadership Style: Comes off easy-going, I'm-not-really-your-boss-we're-all-friends-here-having-a-good-time, but not afraid to be decisive and give direction. Hates exposing her team to danger she feels like they could avoid if she just secretly took it on by herself instead, but that's a quality that'll have to be discovered through RP.

Subordinate Style: Out of practice, and anyway constitutionally incapable of just taking an order without thinking about it, questioning it if necessary, and probably making some smartass remarks of some sort. But works well in a team and once she's had a chance to poke and prod the order and satisfy herself that it's a good one, she's not going to refuse to follow it just to be contrary. Once she trusts someone's leadership she'll follow more readily, but never blindly (and probably make even more jokes).

Hugo Mercier

[personal profile] fripon 2021-10-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Hugo Mercier
Division: Forces
Leadership Role: maker forfend

Routine: Late to bed, late to rise, makes a man— whatever. No real routine. Lingers at meals, hangs around the workroom, spends lots of time in Kirkwall itself or outside of it. If there's any kind of horse-related event in the general vicinity (race, sale, whatever) he'll be there instead.

Demeanor: Friendly, can be chatty but has a good sense of when conversation is welcome and when it isn't and isn't inclined to press if people seem disinterested for whatever reason. With women, conversation is often lowkey flirty in a self-deprecating "we both know this is silly but I have to do it because I'm Orlesian and this is my role in life" kind of way without real intent, and similarly he'll stop if it seems poorly received. General vibe is a fairly useless but also harmless playboy.

Space: Desk is messy, lots of half-finished paperwork he's abandoned to come back to later. Wine bottles/glasses not uncommon. Desk is already a bit scuffed on one corner from him kicking his feet up on it a lot. Drawers mostly empty, except for some random "useful" odds and ends — bits of string, a spare fork, dull penknife, nearly-empty ink bottle, that sort of thing. Some of the paperwork on his desk (and most of the books, when there are books) are actually horse-related. Stud books, sale records, race reports, new training guides, etc.

Typical Division Work: Reluctantly whatever he's assigned, though he'll do his best to duck being assigned things in the first place if he can help it. Prefers things that seem easy and less dangerous, even if that means they're boring. Will do more-dangerous things if it's necessary, or if it'll look bad/unfairly endanger other people if he doesn't. Really not bad in a fight if he's assigned one, just doesn't like it. Helps close rifts because he has an anchor so it seems obligatory, but may complain about having to deal with demons. Will volunteer for anything related to horses, hunting, hounds, falconry. His paperwork is not great (penmanship is dreadful) but he'll take it on just to drag it out as long as possible as a reason not to get assigned other things.

Project(s): None at present. Could potentially stumble into something somehow down the road but for now they sound way out of his wheelhouse, what could he possibly contribute.

Other Work: Spends a lot of time in and around the stables, and while he'll laugh and be like "no that's what grooms are for" if someone suggests he works there, he does actually do a lot of caring for horses (his own, and others without dedicated owners). Sometimes helps handle horse purchases for Riftwatch. Occasionally moonlights for Diplomacy in the sense that he will go to parties and be an upper-class Orlesian who's known at court and has a not-weird reputation who admits he's working with Riftwatch.

Good For: Anything related to horses, Orlesian court connections and social gossip (from a couple years ago), identifying that song you heard in the market based on a couple hummed bars.

Bad For: Putting his neck on the line, leading anything, organization.

Leadership Style:

Subordinate Style: Medium (on the scale of Riftwatch). Lazily avoidant, will try to fly under the radar as much as possible, but not inclined to argue with leadership or disobey orders. More invested than he wants to admit and once he gets rolling on something more competent than he seems.

kantikoy: (is gonna happen)

Adrasteia, a Grey Warden

[personal profile] kantikoy 2021-10-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Era
Character: Adrasteia
Division: Forces
Leadership Role: Morale Officer

Routine:
Mornings:
➥ up at the crack of dawn
➥ brings water up to the 5th floor mage tower if there isn't any, singing the whole way
➥ goes downstairs and grabs food in the mess hall
➥ goes to the Morale Officer's office to eat and handle whatever busywork she's given herself

Afternoons:
➥ post-lunch training at the training grounds a few times per week
➥ alternatively, rounds in the infirmary to see if supplies are needed, anyone needs healing, anyone who is supposed to have checked in with healers hasn't, things like that
➥ goes to the library to exchange books she's checked out (2-3 times per week)

Evenings:
➥ maybe a bath
➥ grabbing food from the mess hall to take upstairs to her room
➥ occasionally stargazing or prayer in the smaller chapel before bed

Demeanor: Adrasteia is a quiet worker, keeping to the Morale Officer's office or occasionally adding nice touches (plants! a stuffed mabari!) to the Grey Warden's office down the hall. She keeps the door open in whichever office she's in, but doesn't make much noise and will come out to investigate loud occurrences. Mostly she's bored, so people should come to bother her.

Space: The offices for both the Morale Officer and the Grey Wardens (which Adrasteia is not in charge of, she just took on organizing the office herself) are neat and tidy. There are tea services in both rooms, plain and silver, with small plates to go with them. Both rooms also boast ample places to sit, if by ample one means room for up to four people in front of a desk that sits another one to two people. The Warden's office has been recently painted, as well.

Typical Division Work: Talking to people about morale! Asking about their opinions regarding parties, dances, that type of thing. What event in Riftwatch's past did you really enjoy — a favorite question of hers.

Project(s): Adrasteia is both well-suited for and interested in Project Felandris, as an elf, a Warden, and a shard-bearer; though she might need a nudge from someone already involved to put herself out there; she doesn't think of herself as much of a researcher since she never had a proper Circle education (or education of any sort other than some homeschooling, really).

Other Work: Caring for both griffons and horses, checking on armory stores, taking on guard duty shifts (usually late at night or early in the morning when others aren't as interested in working).

Good For:
➥ Making healing potions for folks
➥ Knowing who has the good elfroot for smoking (vendors in Kirkwall)
➥ Knowing who in the Alienage sells/makes particular goods

Bad For:
➥ Reaching things (she's short, y'all)
➥ Delegating tasks that maybe she shouldn't be doing herself

Leadership Style: There's not really anyone underneath Adrasteia for her to lead, but overall she's pretty hands-on without being micromanage-y. She believes that people can only thrive if you give them the tools to do so, so she's big on teaching things directly to others.

Subordinate Style: Adrasteia misses the old Seneschal and gives the current one as wide a berth as possible when she can, is polite yet to the point of what she requires/needs from him when she cannot. He is human, and a politicker, and those are both things that don't exactly sit perfectly well with her.

james holden

[personal profile] acreage 2021-10-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Player: z
Character: james holden
Division: research

Routine: he tends to spend a lot more time out in the field or generally out and about (the stables, training with weapons or the griffons) than at his desk. when there's paperwork to be done, like report writing, he may do it at his desk or at the desk in his rooms. more often the latter, probably, because a lot of his paperwork and reading gets done at odd hours when he can't sleep. which is...a lot of nights.

Demeanor: friendly, down to offer his opinion or get other peoples' input on the work, good team player. tends to be a quiet worker otherwise. probably taps his writing implement against his desk when he's thinking.

Space: his desk is kept military-reminiscently neat and organized, documents kept in locked drawers when he's not there using it. important books and papers more likely to be kept in his room than there.

Typical Division Work: most often field work, collecting samples, finding artifacts, testing out devices produced by more technically-minded people in the division. all of that said, he's a big nerd and also spends time hitting the books to look for answers and explanations as necessary.

Project(s): he's a part of project felandaris, and i'd really like to angle him more towards finding/mapping eluvians. his contributions already trend out in the field anyway, and indiana jonesing is a good niche for him.

Other Work: generally down to pitch in wherever an extra set of hands may be needed, but can often be found helping out caring for the horses and griffons. also continues to spend a lot of time down at the refugee settlements outside the city helping with anything he can, and doing any continuing work with publishing/distributing the interview pamphlets about them.

Good For: fairness, compassion for the underdog in a given situation, remembering and acknowledging peoples' skills/strengths

Bad For: diplomacy, minutiae of Theodosian history/society/politics (learning is a constant WIP), work that goes against the moral compass he very loudly has

Leadership Style: tends to be a collaborative leader; he's good at delegation and trusting peoples' expertise at what they do. he's hands-on in wanting to keep a pulse on what's going on, but also how his people are doing, and in taking on biggest — or at least equal — risks himself. takes responsibility very seriously and is committed to keeping people safe and well.

Subordinate Style: takes orders from tony pretty well, mostly because he was friends with tony prior to him becoming div head. checks in with his superiors with updates he finds relevant, but not unlikely to report in only once the assignment's done. entirely likely that any superiors may think he has an attitude problem, because he has a bone-deep distrust of authority figures as a rule.

bastien

[personal profile] cozen 2021-10-18 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Bastien
Division: Diplomacy
Leadership Role: Jeshavis leader

Routine: More Gallows- than field-based, so when he isn't gone:

  • Mornings: Only consistently in the Jeshavis office on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Other days he might be there, but most of the time he works in his room until lunch.
  • Afternoons: Reliably in the Jeshavis office, six days a week.
  • Evenings: Stays late 2-4 days a week, depending on how busy things are and what he has going on.
  • Day Off: Fluctuates, but unless something is more on fire than usual, you can pry it from his cold dead hands.
Demeanor: Friendly, chatty, inquisitive, but attuned to whether he's annoying people and will leave them alone if he is. The Jeshavis office opens onto the Scouting and Diplomacy work rooms, so he's prone to popping his head out to join overheard conversations in either. Likewise always willing to stop what he's doing and talk to whoever drops in on the office. (That's why he works in his room instead most mornings.) Does a lot of absentminded lute-strumming while he reads things or thinks through problems. He'll shut the doors for that, but it might leak out a little.

Space: Thanks to Alexandrie, there are good curtains (that change with the seasons!) and a rug and some nice decorative touches in the Jeshavis office. Bastien's only contribution is maps of Ferelden and Orlais on the wall, dotted with pins that make sense to him but probably no one else. The first office has two desks, one for him and one for Lexie, and a table between the desks. His desk surface and drawers are a little chaotic. The back room has a larger table for group meetings, two couches/settees on opposite walls, and locked cabinets that contain all of the project’s reports and any confidential information.

Typical Division Work: Liaising and negotiating, corresponding with allies and responding to complaints, being charming at people. Working his printing press if anyone needs something printed. Until someone takes over as Trademaster he's dedicating a fair amount of his time to doing some of that job. And he moonlights with the Scouting Division for infiltration/spy work when needed.

Project(s): He's leading Jeshavis! His relevant skills are he used to be a spy-for-hire.

Other Work: Sporadically helps with whatever, but more routinely: takes mail ashore and is good at getting it into hands that can deliver it quickly, occasionally helps the cleaning staff with laundry and mending, will print things for anyone who needs something printed if it's Riftwatch work or if they pay for it.

Good For: Knowing what's going on in Kirkwall, smoothing things over with the locals, keeping a level head.

Bad For: Being stern, direct combat situations, legible handwriting.

Leadership Style: Easy-going and collaborative. (Like maybe too collaborative. Like maybe sometimes you wish he would stop asking everyone what they think of the plan and trying to address all of their concerns and instead just say the plan is happening as-is so the meeting can end already.) Prefers to delegate on a volunteer basis but will assign things if he has to. Great at not making people feel dumb or embarrassed if they need help.

Subordinate Style: Generally proactive and agreeable—in demeanor, specifically. He can be agreeable while disagreeing, especially since Byerly and Yseult are already his personal faves. He's the type to bring those disagreements to them privately and then be on their side in front of everyone else even if he thinks they're wrong. If he's taking orders from anyone else, for whatever reason, his tendencies to ask forgiveness instead of permission or defy orders when no one is looking and then lie through his teeth about it being out of his hands might ramp up.

john silver.

[personal profile] hornswoggle 2021-10-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Character: John Silver
Division: Diplomacy
Leadership Role: Master of Information

Routine: John has a desk in the office he shares with Petrana de Cedoux, but he uses it fairly sporadically. He absolutely prefers to do his work out in common areas where he is easily seen and approached by anyone who's inclined. Most mornings he can be observed posted up in the main hall reviewing any paperwork over breakfast. He'll stick around the Gallows until lunch, and then head into Kirkwall via ferry around mid-afternoon. Often he's schmoozing around Hightown, but he can also be found in Emlyn's tavern; there's a specific table for him on the second floor overlooking the main room that Emlyn will direct Riftwatch agents to unprompted. If he doesn't have something specific to do in Hightown society, he'll spend his evenings glad-handing in any given Lowtown tavern, schmoozing with sailors. Often either takes the last ferry, hires a boat to return him to the Gallows or rents a room in Kirkwall for the evening. Late hours, early mornings, some exception on weekends.

Demeanor: John is observant, is the thing. He's chatty if someone seems receptive to it, but more than capable of reading when someone prefers to work in peace. He loves a sounding board for his ideas, but he's particular about who he chooses for that task. He likes knowing what other people are doing and giving advice/shifting his own focus and efforts accordingly so as not to be working at cross-purposes. If you want someone to chat with, he's always extremely willing to set aside what he's doing to make himself available.

Space: This office is maybe 75% Petrana. John's ceded most of the shelves to her, and rarely uses the space for it's intended purpose. His desk is clean, everything stowed in drawers. There's a map he's pinned up to a wall with some marks as to his present focuses (ie, Antiva) but apart from that not a lot of John can be gleaned from the space. His presence there is sporadic, largely dictated by whether he wants to be chatting to Petrana or if he has other appointments requiring his presence.

Typical Division Work: There's literally no part of the day to day that John shirks. If it lands on his desk, he wrangles it. His day to day generally gets taken up with schmoozing the local nobility, letter-writing, wheeling and dealing, etc. But John likes to have his fingers in everything, and his best stat is charisma, so if it doesn't land on his desk and someone else seems less than enthused, John's a safe bet to cover.

Project(s): No project involvement yet. He has an eye on Haven, but whether or not he signs up there is a bit of a toss up. While he does have relevant skills, keeping an eye on any Chantry outreach and associations is his main motivator.

Other Work: Not unless explicitly asked. John focuses on his division work and his own personal side projects. Everything else going on is outside his scope.

Good For: John has an incredible amount of connections built up across Kirkwall at this point, so if you need goods, services, favors, what have you, John can likely point you in the right direction. Beyond that, do you need to negotiate? Tap him in, he's got this. Do you need to sweet talk your way through a problem? John's got you. Basically John's your ideal for any charisma-based operation.

Bad For: Nerd-based maneuvering. John can adapt on the spot and hang on until a real expert taps in, but if you need that deep book-learning type input, John's not your man. He can and will keep up in the field, but he has the obvious physical limitation that needs accounting for.

Leadership Style: "Here's a task, get it done, have fun."

John isn't interested in micro-managing. He prefers people hit the mark with whatever approach appeals to them. If he gives an order, it comes with a certain amount of latitude for people to accomplish it, but he likes being kept in the loop and he likes results. Very interested in hearing opinions and altering an approach based on conversation, all about adapting and collaborating so long as the ultimate objective is completed. Prefers to be well-liked, happy to bend as long as it still serves him, or convince people otherwise if not.

Basically, he's easy to work for, just don't fuck it up.

Subordinate Style: Periodic check-ins. John likes knowing what's happening, if only so he can tailor his approach to continue pursuing his own goals in parallel to the Division's broader trajectory. Prefers to avoid digging his heels in on any given matter, and pursue controversial goals on the side, especially when he's aware that they'd be poorly received. Essentially prefers a lot of room to maneuver. He's got this, let him handle it, etc.

derrica.

[personal profile] tender 2021-10-18 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Derrica
Division: Forces

Routine: Derrica's seen her desk, sure. Has she ever sat at it? No.

Generally, she splits her time in the Gallows between the Infirmary and the Training Yard. She really prefers spending her time in the field, and will volunteer to accompany anyone heading out, especially if they're lacking a dedicated healer. But if she is Gallows-bound, she'll halve her day between the Infirmary and the Training Yard and adjust depending on which spot seems to benefit from her presence more. (If there's more people in need of healers, she'll spend most of her day in the infirmary, but if the training yard is hopping with people who need a partner to square off with, she'll stick around there.) The extent of her time in the Forces workspace is to grab a bunch of paper and ink, then vanish.

Reliably strikes out to Kirkwall around sundown to tavern hop. Will almost always scramble to make the last ferry back Any reports she writes are generally done on the ferry or in a tavern. She keeps late nights, so can be found meandering around Gallows common areas, ie the gardens or the ramparts. Sometimes she'll raid the kitchen late at night for a snack before starting her nighttime routine. (Long baths, lots of skin and hair care involved, lots of careful handling of jewelry.) Will sometimes do a quick check in on any infirmary patients if someone's recently discharged after serious injury.

Demeanor: If Derrica's working on something, especially if she's working on a report for the Commander, she cannot carry on a conversation at the same time. Background noise doesn't bother her, it's only if someone assumes she will participate that things get dicey.

Otherwise, she seeks input from a handful of people. She isn't the type to just turn to the person next to her and ask, she generally seeks out individuals who she thinks have some sort of expertise or knowledge that she can trust. If she's assigned something in particular she takes it seriously, so it's not something she'll toss out for the room at large to give opinions on.

Space: Completely untouched.

Typical Division Work: Will gamely rotate through all tasks on the day-to-day, though her usuals are guard duty, gently knocking people around the training yard and shifts in the infirmary. She'll pretty enthusiastically volunteer herself to assist on the docks as needed, or stand at safe distance while weapons are tested just because sometimes a healer should be on hand for that, right?

She truly does prefer not to involve herself with any construction-based tasks, but will put those biceps to use if her name comes up on the rota. Will attempt to shirk armor polishing if she can, it's boring, please, have mercy.

Project(s): Flirted with the idea of joining Haven when Ilias was around, but now won't abide the idea of working under a Chantry brother so she's just observing it from afar.

Other Work: Will make appearances at Diplomacy functions to be very polite in fancy company. Otherwise, I think by merit of being in Forces most of her extracurricular activities are just functions of Forces day to day. It's not her wheelhouse really to help out in the stables or tend to the griffins, but she will dutifully take her turn with it arises, or she'll help sort files or shelve books in the library, basically she's easy to ask help from because she's very game to assist, even in areas she's unfamiliar with as long as someone's willing to guide her.

Good For: The obvious, she's a prodigious healer with stellar beside manner. Otherwise, do you need someone to gently help you untangle a dilemma? Did you make some kind of embarrassing mistake that needs to be untangled before anyone else notices? Derrica's probably your best bet for extremely nonjudgmental assistance.

Bad For: Has just about zero tracking skills. (These were not necessary to life on the open sea, believe it or not.)

Leadership Style: Think kindergarten teacher. You can disobey her, but gosh will she be disappointed in you.

If Derrica is actively leading a mission, she'll entertain suggestions up to the point where she feels someone is 1. actively advocating for something she's already deemed too dangerous 2. actively trying o undermine her. She isn't overly rigid, but she does make decisions based on keeping everyone safe and will only entertain/bend so much if she feels that the alternatives endanger the group and the objective.

Subordinate Style: Almost always a model subordinate. (It helps that she has never really been asked to do anything too onerous.) Takes initiative, prefers to be left alone to work her way through an assignment or assemble a team. No updates until the task is completed, or if she anticipates a delay severe enough that she thinks a Division Head should be made away. If she asks a clarifying question it's only because she's exhausted all other avenues or feels that the answer is necessary to ensuring the success and safety of the mission. Generally you can send Derrica off with an assignment and expect a positive result without too much fuss.

ellis.

[personal profile] heorte 2021-10-18 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Ellis
Division: Forces

Routine: Exceptionally early to rise. Sparse breakfast, gets in a jog and some other warm up type activities before anyone else shows up to the training yard. Will spend the entire morning there unless yoinked for field work.

Often yoinked for fieldwork. (Tony and Wysteria reliably have first dibs, then anyone else who needs someone burly to lift and carry and fend off threats.)

Afternoons toss up between guard duty and time spent at Wysteria's haunted house. Ellis checks in there once a day, the chickens need him, etc.

Paperwork is usually an evening activity, followed by checking over his armor and mace and any other equipment that might need attention. He's been trying to read more books relating to scientific exploits, which tends to be slow-going due to how many things need to be cross-referenced so he gets the gist of what's being said. A work in progress, so to speak.

Turns in at a decent time, on account of the whole obscenely early to rise thing.

Demeanor: Is Ellis chatty? No.

Ellis prefers to get his work done quietly and without interruption. He has especially low tolerance for shenanigans in his vicinity when he's trying to read or write, mostly because he really has to focus to process. When something's assigned to him, Ellis completes it on his own in a timely manner, without any real procrastination. If he seeks collaboration it's a one to one situation and it's after he's already put in a substantial amount of work that he feels comes up short and would benefit from another person's input.

Space: Untouched.

Typical Division Work: Guard duty, guard duty, guard duty, with a healthy side of combat training to break things up. Ellis is all about those hands-on tasks with just a little bit of violence involved.

Really, he isn't very picky. He goes where he's told and does what needs doing. Often follows up his time in the training yard with inventory and maintenance in the armory and dealing with equipment. If he has nothing else pressing, that might lead into just dealing with requisitions, but Ellis often will leave that for someone with better penmanship than himself.

Otherwise, he'll duck anything to do with the docks on account of not knowing shit about boats. He can be roped into escorting visitors, but actively attempts to evaporate into mist when such a task is being floated around in search of volunteers.

Project(s): Project Sashamiri

Other Work: Does "accompanying a bunch of nerds out to poke at rifts" count as work outside his division?

Technically the stables and the griffins are part of Forces work, but Ellis devotes time to them because he enjoys it, not because it's stipulated as part of his duties. Prefers not to be seen doing it, but he does tend the herb gardens when no one's watching.

Good For: Lifting heavy objects. Also, an exceptional tank. Good with animals.

Bad For: Most any diplomatic scenario you might dream up, unless his job within that scenario is "stand there and look intimidating." Despite many rumors to the contrary he is not much use for science and nerd stuff.

Leadership Style: Stoic. If you're looking for lengthy discussions on strategy, this is not your man. Ellis is the type of person who quietly takes in a lot of information, processes it, and decides on a course of action. He doesn't talk his way to a decision, though he'll explain himself if asked.

While Ellis will always hear people out, he isn't always going to act on their contributions or alter his own approach. And there's always a point in any given discussion where Ellis refuses to entertain any further second-guessing, with the expectation that the people working alongside him are capable enough to adapt in the midst of a fight.

All that being said, Ellis is most comfortable with leadership in combat scenarios, where he is specifically angling to eliminate an opposing force. Outside of missions dealing with that exact circumstance, he'll shift leadership duties to another individual he sees as more qualified than himself.

Subordinate Style: Ellis is very comfortable taking orders, particularly if he feels the approach is reasonable and any given threat has been given due consideration. He will ask his questions up front, and only if the orders are lacking some piece of information. (ie if he's being sent to clear out a bandit stronghold and the orders don't give a sense of the camp's layout, etc.) Being told they don't have the information doesn't bother him, he just likes to be sure he's operating off a complete picture.

Actual insubordination is rare, and only comes on the heels of feeling the order is careless to the point of negligence. It'll rarely be an argument, just a series of questions in the course of conversation meant to create opportunity to alter course. If the course remains unaltered Ellis will alter it himself and deal with the ramifications after the fact. (Above circumstances still apply; Ellis will stick his neck out solely in combat scenarios where he clocks an unacceptable risk, nothing else.)

Player: Brooklyn
Character: Tony Stark
Division: Research
Leadership Role: Research Division Head

Routine:
Mornings: Desk time: meetings, reviewing reports, reading and answering letters, signing off on expense requests, so on and so forth. Peak distractible. Otherwise, on his way out the door to go do field work.
Afternoons: Workshop and tinkering, if not out doing field work. Can also be found (or not found) at Wysteria's Hightown residence. Sometimes a late afternoon jog around the fortress.
Evenings: More tinkering, if for more special interest projects than things that directly benefit Riftwatch.

Demeanor: Erratic, distractible, pivots hard between complete focus and dismissal. (If you catch him while he's clearing out admin tasks, you'll find this is the best time to get listened to.) Despite any apparent disinterest levels or forgetfulness, he is always listening/remembering/observing. Likes everything to move at a rapid pace, prefers a transactional conversation when it's work related, but rudeness tends to be buffered with an innate friendliness, depending on your tolerance level. As far as his own work goes, he has a habit of tunnelling in on it on his own, but takes interest in (usually without completely steamrolling) other people's projects.

Space: Tony's office is segmented into two parts, along a kind of L-shape. Directly from the door is the main space, with a desk towards the back, and a large table a little off centre. The desk is always a mess with reports and paperwork, but in a transitional state rather than accumulating clutter. The table appears to be used for drawing and writing, a few books stacked there, writing utensils and sheaths of paper, with a lantern directly near it.

Down the other side of the L is a comfortable seating area. The books on the shelves tend to be things directly related to his own interests, along with little knick-knacks and decorations, including but not limited to a dented kettle helmet, some wooden puzzles, and a chess box.

Sometimes, there's an iron, lyrium-infused automaton named Fred, but don't mind him, he's very polite. There's a lute in the corner, and a fairly sophisticated coffee set-up.

Typical Division Work: Designing and building, monitoring the ARRIVED system, researching rifts, and division management. His kingdom for dedicated admin assistance. He won't even fall in love, he promises.

Project(s): He formerly ran Felandaris, skewing it towards a more rift-research focus, and still participates and files in reports that apply to it.

Other Work: Not really, but will play show pony for Diplomacy things, especially if it equates to funding for Research.

Good For: Fixing anything, drawing in straight lines, Science Facts.

Bad For: Cooking, being on time to things, setting a sombre tone to a serious conversation.

Leadership Style: Very hands on? Extremely abstracted? Both, somehow, at the same time. He is comfortable in assuming the competence of others and delegating, but will step in and take over if he thinks he can do it better himself, whether or not he has time. This is only in extreme circumstances, however, and is more liable to enable people to do their best by opening up opportunities, moving money around to make things happen, or making connections. He loves a stupid and dangerous idea and will try to Cool Mom this energy by being supportive of such things so people don't just do it in secret, but you know, gremlins will be gremlins. He would know.

Subordinate Style: Terrible. Good thing this doesn't apply!

Character: Marcus Rowntree
Division: Forces
Leadership Role: Captain of the Watch

Routine:
Mornings: Brief stand up meetings with the previous evening's sentry and those about to go on watch. Briefly ghosts through his office to attend to anything urgent, and then goes in for exercise and drills in the training yard.
Afternoons: Whatever Forces tasks are required, or may volunteer some labour at the stables. He will also check around for any mages who wish to do more rigorous magic training, and go out to the foothills, perhaps once or twice a week.
Evenings: Checks in on nightly guardwork if not doing it himself.

This is all under the proviso that he isn't out in the field, which he often is.

Demeanor: Professionally speaking, dealing with Marcus is a brisk and impersonal affair, bordering on rude where social courtesy may slip to the wayside. He will give nothing back if someone attempts small talk with him.

Space: Neat and spartan, clearly a place for brief bursts of paperwork rather than a place to get comfortable, although there is an ashtray set to one side. All documents relevant to his role are locked away in drawers, so the surface of his desk is more or less entirely clear.

Typical Division Work: So far, Marcus maintains an even split between Forces work and duties as Captain of the Watch. The latter involves writing up guard rosters, investigating security concerns, patrol, and general security-oriented internal affairs.

As far as usual Forces work goes, Marcus will generally put up his hand for most high-violence missions as they crop up, and the occasional escort/bodyguard task, although he may be more inclined to pick and choose, all things considered. His preferences lie in providing protection for diplomatic or research-based missions out in the Free Marches or the wilderness as opposed to, say, Val Royeaux.

He will also pick up opportunities to train up other mages in combat, and doesn't shy away from general manual labour as it comes up. He is a griffon rider, too, so will often go and train and spend time with L.W.M.

Project(s): Negative.

Other Work: Mage-related diplomacy stuff, both visibly and more clandestine, and caring for ponies.

Good For: Horse facts, knows a good but inexpensive tailor in one of the nicer streets in Lowtown, lava magic.

Bad For: Diplomacy, deeply academic anything, circuitous witty banter.

Leadership Style: Extremely business-like, zero compunctions about doling out instructions and orders where appropriate, a lot of patience for questions, confusion, uncertainty, very little patience for outright disrespect.

Subordinate Style: Kind of the same as the above! He takes orders just fine and may be a little overly formal in his dealings, but this is mostly a personal strategy to simplify dynamics and whatever his own ego might be feeling at the time. He will, however, state objection if he has it, and sometimes forgets to phrase requests as questions. Otherwise, he tends to just get on with whatever work is in front of him.

[personal profile] charmoffensive 2021-10-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Brooklyn
Character: Loxley
Division: Diplomacy

Routine: For the most part, Loxley lives and works outside of the Gallows, based instead in an apartment in Lowtown. He will be late to the news he's been assigned a desk. The below is a typical day when he's not volunteered himself into a mission.

Mornings: Just getting back to his place to sleep, or sleeping late.
Afternoons: Finishing sleeping off a late night patrol, and/or otherwise going about miscellaneous business, such as watching marks of interest, organising meetings with useful contacts, or visiting the Gallows to resupply on some food and groceries from the kitchens.
Evenings: Patrolling Lowtown and Darktown, either to stop violent crimes or a more extended investigation around the kinds of crimes the city guard don't bother with or can't access.

Demeanor: Chatty, friendly, can be flirty but when it comes to colleagues, only after the first few friendly interactions or if they put that out in the world first. He is a bit selective about collaboration due to the nature of his work, which can sometimes be sensitive or a bit askew of core Riftwatch goals. He is keenly interested in opinions and ideas, when the opportunity is there to receive them.

Space: Untouched.

Typical Division Work: To date, Loxley's Diplomacy work has mostly manifested in times of emergency, such as assisting in the settling of refugees, the training up of militias, hostile negotiations, and so on. More typical work tends to straddle the line with Scouting, with spying elements, breaking and entering, spreading propaganda, and making friends in low places.

Project(s): Nay.

Other Work: His 'Other Work' is more central to his time and focus, which is swashbuckling vigilantism in Kirkwall. His focus is mostly on disrupting the kind of organised crime that exploits the poor and benefits the wealthy and powerful, as well as trying to help those in circumstances where help is hard to come by.

Good For: Picking locks, an empathetic ear, will do a flip if you yell "do a flip".

Bad For: Noticing literally anything, doing morally questionable things that make him feel bad, lifting heavy things.

Leadership Style: Loxley is very confident about making decisions and doing things, and second-guesses himself when it's up to him to get other people to do things. He will take charge in small group scenarios if he feels a confident voice will help, but prolonged leadership is a point of intimidation. It is a thing he's working on.

Subordinate Style: To date, Loxley's interaction with leadership tends to be kept to as much of a minimum as possible, but doesn't set out to make trouble for himself. He is a bit of a chaotic wildcard when it comes to taking orders and values feeling like he's doing things because he personally believes in the things he's doing, and fortunately, he would like to save the world.

Byerly Rutyer

[personal profile] bouchonne 2021-10-18 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Hope
Character: Byerly Rutyer
Division: Diplomacy
Leadership Role: Head of Diplomacy

Routine: Byerly keeps late hours, typically waking up in the early afternoon and going to sleep just before the sun comes up. Diplomacy happens at night, indeed. He can often be found at his desk - there's a lot of paperwork to be done in this division. He goes frequently into Kirkwall, generally to meet with potential contacts, sometimes just to have fun.

Demeanor: Generally chatty and approachable, if frequently irreverent with a rather trolly sense of humor. He, by and large, enjoys talking with people, especially if they spar with him verbally.

Space: Appears strategically messy. The papers that are easy to reach, and the ones in unlocked drawers, are ones that seem juicy but aren't, or that are straight-up lies. There's plenty kept under lock and key, but the locks are hard to find. (Some of the mess, however, is non-strategic; he really does have a bad habit of leaving out empty coffee cups.)

Typical Division Work: Distributing assignments, writing correspondence, frequently meeting with key figures.

Project(s): Nope

Other Work: Entertainment. Byerly (with the support of other musicians in Riftwatch) will often give impromptu concerts at mealtimes or just at random. If your character has musical talent, they've probably been roped into this.

Good For:
-Byerly always Knows A Guy. Doesn't matter what you need, what the circumstances are, anything - he always Knows A Guy and can help you get what you want.
-More legitimately, he also actually knows important people and can always get an introduction. It's insane, the number of extremely prominent people who grudgingly tolerate this asshole.
-Music! Even people who don't like Byerly generally have to admit that he's really talented at music.

Bad For:
-Fighting. (He pretends to be worse than he is. He's actually a pretty respectable duelist, and okay with a crossbow. So he plays up the helplessness a bit - but also would seriously get smashed by almost every other member of Riftwatch.)
-Mornings.
-Heights. He will sock anyone in the jaw if they suggest getting on a griffin.

Leadership Style: Generally, open to ideas. Anyone who brings an idea to him will get consideration, and if Byerly doesn't go with that idea, he'll provide explanations and feedback as to why. Once someone has been given an assignment, he doesn't check in too often, and generally expects a high level of independence in problem-solving; he gets annoyed if he gets called in to decide too many things or fix too many issues. He's not exactly kind, but he'll go to bat for his people intensely and will advocate fiercely for anyone he's loyal to.

Subordinate Style: Byerly is a nightmare subordinate. Way too much improvisation and defiance of orders...but he always gets the work done, generally with panache.
arkitect: (16)

[personal profile] arkitect 2021-10-18 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Teej
Character: Emet-Selch
Division: Research

Routine: He tends toward keeping later hours than most! You're less likely to find him in the early mornings unless it's required-- he will be present for meetings or anything else that necessitates it, but when it's not necessary, he shows up to the offices later and then will be working later into the evening. Anything that requires access to materials he won't have in later hours will get taken care of as a priority. You're also likely to find him lingering around common areas or out in the city at night when he isn't working; he stargazes occasionally, so if you're inclined toward high places you might have company while he tries to get a better view.

Demeanor: Absolutely does not like to be bothered while he's trying to focus on something. If he's doing more idle work like skimming through texts for particular keywords, or looking for specific titles, organizing things, etc. etc., he's a lot more likely to be willing to talk. He also doesn't mind talking theory about others' projects, discussing it for his own, or asking about fields he's read up on less! But if he's already busy, disturbing him isn't going to go over well unless you're there with something that will take priority over whatever he's doing.

Outside of work: if he doesn't want to be bothered he will at least usually be direct about it; if someone is really annoying him, though, he might fuck with them instead.

Space: Very neat! He does use his desk space and very much prefers that it not be touched. He will notice if anything he left there is out of place, but also will not leave anything important or personal; if it's anything that you couldn't normally just get for yourself (books, supplies, etc), it's not left there while he's out.

Typical Division Work: Generally fine covering whatever needs covering for Research. The more boring tasks are still things he's good at and would like to be done right, so he doesn't avoid doing them as long as it's necessary. Would not do great with anything seen as busy work but that probably wouldn't be an issue. Very much prefers research into the topics he's most interested in and is most focused on studying rifts and native magic, as well as learning languages here for translation purposes; always down for some fieldwork on related subjects.

Project(s): Ideally will be involved with Felandaris but that might be a future thing? Not sure about that at the moment but it's definitely something he intends to work on if allowed.

Other Work: Likely helps out somewhat with things like armory maintenance if needed, since he does spend some time on combat practice and is familiar/comfortable with weaponry. Not very inclined toward anything involving picking up after other people in general, though, and usually absorbed in other pursuits; he's likelier to spend time studying world history/languages/etc and to be more focused on self-development in that way, or to just pick up additional division-related work.

Good For:
-he can see active magic/enchantments & see where the Veil is weaker/stronger, so if you need somebody to detect some magical shit, hello.
-really good memory. He might actually know where he has seen that one Orlesian book with the red binding that you can't remember the name of.
-general Mage Things as well as standard fighting, he can hold his own when needed.

Bad For:
-currently less familiar with Thedosian languages and not as useful for translation help/etc. Work in progress.
-if you need general physical labor done, he has somewhere else to be all of a sudden. Can do it but will try not to.
-explaining things in a direct and uncomplicated way the first time you ask.

Leadership Style: Generally not bad at it. He's done it before, and doesn't like having to be too hands-on; ideally he would prefer to delegate things out and sort of oversee from that point rather than micromanaging, which he thinks sort of defeats the point of delegation in the first place. If things aren't getting done, though, he'll keep a closer eye on people and reassign or nudge them along as needed.

Subordinate Style: Prefers to be left alone once he knows what they want him to be doing-- he can handle himself and his own work, thanks. He's likely to start getting annoyed if checked in on too much. Might be seen as having an attitude at times because that's just a function of his personality, but he's not unwilling; he is just likely to push back if he thinks something is a bad idea or poorly assigned.

Character: Astarion
Division: Scouting
Leadership Role: king menace

Routine: ....work, haha, cute.

Most of the time he keeps haunting hours: late nights and early mornings out in Kirkwall's Lowtown/Docks/Darktown (occasionally drinks and chills with red light locals to stock up on gossip) focused on acquiring coin, intel, actual literal junk— any advantage that benefits him personally first, and Riftwatch second.

Activity-wise, he picks pockets, runs minor cons, (has recently stopped hunting bounties, but can still be persuaded for a hefty share of the profit), tussles occasionally with other local brigands, but generally not by choice.

Expect flexibility and volatility in his schedule at all times, in all ways.
places he often visits: Lowtown (his home is located here), the Docks, Darktown, any and every tavern

places he sparingly visits: Hightown, the Gallows offices/workroom

places he never visits: the Alienage (any Alienage, in fact), and anywhere else in the Gallows, otherwise someone might ask him for help, or worse— to work

Demeanor:

Talkative beyond belief, but only if he's neutral or on friendly terms, doubly so if out and about in Kirkwall rather than the Gallows: touchy (as in prone to physical touching), demanding, coy, needy, childishly enthusiastic about pranks and schoolyard humor, charming when he wants something.

Otherwise the only times he'll be incessant is just to cause pain from pestering. Visibly broods if in a piss poor mood. The aura changes faster than you can blink.

Space:

Pristine damaged in one corner where the words 'Abby was here' has been etched in, and otherwise untouched. He's literally never there. That said, there's always one delicious looking, beautiful treat set out on the surface of his desk, right in the middle of it. A bottle of wine, a basket of fruit, a tart, etc.

This is poisoned. If you take it and drink/eat it, expect to be sick all day (and potentially all night). Restocked weekly.

(**Cole will intermittently replace the tainted fruit/food with non-poisoned, perfectly fine alternatives. If you’d like to have your character eat the trap and not get sick, pls come let me know because I think it’s hilarious and Astarion would be utterly bewildered by it.)

Typical Division Work:

He can be asked to do deskwork, but 1: if it's reviewing intel, all he'll ever do is skim it for himself and stamp it with approval without vetting it 2: compile data with the equivalent finesse of a bad dwrp app (ie writes like 2 sentences, shuffles the paperwork around, shrugs and drops it off) 3: draws maps badly on purpose. Puts little birds on them. Sometimes draws dicks and or boobs in the corners but discreetly enough that you have to kind of look for them.

Ironically, he does the best at reporting on things he hasn't asked been asked for: local gossip, distant relations and correspondence, potentially exploitable opportunities, etc. Anything that isn't paperwork gets shockingly proficient results.

Project(s):

NA at the moment, could be persuaded to participate in the future. Broad swath skillsets are:
。charming/entertaining/sociable/experienced with parties and high society events
。adept at manipulation
。stealthy as the night itself
。skilled at seduction, has 0 qualms about feigning friendship or affection for results
。loves to stab, also good at it
。deft performer
。can pick locks and pockets

Other Work:

Bribe him if you want him to do something, otherwise lol no. He's washing his hair, darling. Can't. No time.

Good For:
。manipulation of every shade/sniffing out manipulation in turn; regularly runs odd cons and (minor!!) thefts so tug on his sleeve if you need advice with something along those uncouth lines
。stealthy sneaky, knows the lay of the land. any land.
。10/10 great with a knife or a dagger, can be paid to teach or just...kill for you

Bad For:
。cannot take direct hits in a fight
。shit at anything well-organized or rigidly straightforward: missions, fights, etc
。can't speak Thedosian languages at all. knows like 3 words in Tevene and 2 curse words. wonder why.

Leadership Style:

Bad things happening to other people is funny, bad things happening to him is not: in some hypothetical scenario of leadership, Astarion expects the people working underfoot to be competent and capable, and to not get in his way— otherwise he couldn’t care less what they do with themselves.

Subordinate Style:

Field work is fine. Astarion preens and purrs over doing anything along those lines without complaint whatsoever. Otherwise, in regards to clerical work, desk work, writing or summarizing reports, etc, he'll smile sweetly and do jack all. Very unruly. A shiba inu to the last. Or a cat. Or a bat.

Take your pick.

Tl;dr local former slave doesn't do anything he doesn't want to, feel free to fight with him on this, he just won't make it easy. Ever.

Character: Benedict Artemaeus
Division: Diplomacy
Leadership Role: Ambassador's Assistant

Routine: Spends most of his time at his desk. He starts in the morning after weapons training, and works until late afternoon.

Demeanor: Quiet and prim, unexpectedly professional. Not much of a smiler, but isn't too sassy to anyone but Byerly or people who seem especially deserving. He's not necessarily excited to talk to office visitors, but he's not overtly rude to them-- if anything he seems like he'd just rather get back to work.

Space: He keeps his desk tidy, without much decoration. There are little ink drawings shoved in one of the drawers, nothing too scandalous or incriminating about them: they're just from idle moments.

Typical Division Work: Fielding office visitors and working on correspondence/other housekeeping type stuff that aren't urgent or important enough to need Byerly's direct oversight.
An important aspect of this job is gauging Byerly's mood at any given moment, and either turning people away or showing them in, sometimes with a vengeance in the latter case.

Project(s): He was previously involved in the design and painting of the dining hall decor, and would very much be interested in doing more along those lines.

Other Work: n/a, division stuff takes up most of his time

Good For: Reading/writing/translating Tevene; familiarity with the tastes & lifestyle of Tevinter aristocracy; hedonistic pursuits

Bad For: Anything involving manual labor; non-magical combat; delicate social interactions

Leadership Style: He'd be uncomfortable leading anything, and with any confidence would be fairly bossy without a lot of wisdom on how to manage people. Without confidence, second-guesses himself constantly and spirals when it's clear he's unable to command respect.

Subordinate Style: He takes orders surprisingly well and seems to find some comfort in knowing exactly what he's supposed to be doing, with a metric for success. It's highly likely he's perceived to have an attitude-- this is both because he's a posh and fairly quiet person by nature, and because Byerly goes out of his way to cultivate one.

Routine: This is honestly a mystery and will probably stay that way forever. Sometimes he's here, sometimes he's there. Sometimes he's a dog. If anyone knows his schedule, they should probably tell him what it is.

Demeanor: Absolutely Mr Sunshine himself. Talks to his desk neighbors, talks to himself, hums if he can get away with it, but-- most importantly-- will instantly and entirely shut up if yelled at about it.
If anyone ever doubts that he doesn't care how their day is going, they are misreading the situation.

Space: His desk in the workroom contains no paperwork, but houses an assortment of objects like his tambourine, a few clothing accessories, a single book of letters, and a small amount of money. This might be his house??

Typical Division Work: Mostly spying/patrolling, as a dog or a pigeon, though plenty of this is also done busking and wandering Lowtown.

Project(s): Not yet, but he would do very well with morale building activities.

Other Work: He isn't known to do anything else, though he does have a way of appearing when anyone else is playing music, not that that counts as work necessarily.

Good For: Traveling/listening/following marks undetected, as an animal; unreasonable feats of acrobatics, which can also be translated into careful footwork; know-how regarding Antivan or Dalish culture/language

Bad For: Reading or writing in any language; tasks requiring violence or intimidation; debating or arguing points

Leadership Style: He makes an unexpectedly easy leader as long as he knows what he's doing, with clear instruction ability and the usual unnervingly cheerful attitude. He won't volunteer to lead, necessarily, but if handed the task he wants to do it well, and his overabundance of empathy and compassion makes him pleasant to get along with if not necessarily efficient. He is, however, challenged very easily.

Subordinate Style: Being a dog who can turn into a man, he will follow most people to the ends of the earth so long as it's clear they aren't intentionally pointing him into danger.

Character: Barrow
Division: Forces

Routine: Morning to early afternoon is spent providing weapons training to anyone who wants it, as long as he's in the Gallows. He'll eat lunch sometime in there, and will occasionally take a nap in his special Creaky Bastard Throne if things are slow enough.
He pops up to the workroom periodically if there are things to be done (aka exclusively to throw paper balls at Gabranth), but that's an awful lot of stairs for someone whose knees have gone to shit, so he's more likely to be found doing any kind of book or correspondence work in the dining hall, where he'll hang out through the evening before fucking off to Lowtown to get drunk and play cards.
He always makes it back in time to start drills again in the morning, but the trainees probably make bets on how hung over he is on any given day.

Demeanor: Eminently friendly, except when he isn't-- but when he isn't, he at least manages to be withdrawn about it, hunching over his work and muttering to himself.
Otherwise, he'll bullshit with anyone nearby as long as they seem game. It's hard to get quiet work done when he's around, but he'll fuck off easily enough if told to do so.

Space: His desk is pretty sparse, but one drawer contains a veritable arsenal of folded paper siege weapons. If rubber band balls existed, he would have several. No actual work gets done here.

Typical Division Work: Barrow would rather die than do paperwork. He spends most of his time out in the training yard, sparring with and teaching those less skilled in martial practice, and when he's not doing that he's maintaining and cleaning the yard, its weapons, and its dummies.
This is all, of course, when he isn't out on assignment.

Project(s): Nothing specific

Other Work: He'll occasionally fill in on the guard rotation, and is easily convinced to help with any manual labor or heavy lifting needed around the Gallows.

Good For: Physical activity requiring someone of enormous size and considerable strength; teaching combat skills; Templar abilities, if pressed

Bad For: Interfacing with mages; precision work; sitting still for a long time without falling asleep

Leadership Style: Though Barrow generally won't volunteer to lead, he falls into the role with relative ease and is known to be both decisive and forgiving. His easy manner allows him to direct a team well, but only as long as he actually cares about what they're doing-- otherwise, he's just as likely to let them run amok and take it into their own hands.
Basically, if he coached a sport the kids would never win, but they'd have an amazing time.

Subordinate Style: He takes orders well, but very much has a lazy streak that can result in some corner-cutting and vague reporting. If reprimanded, he gets better for a while and then falls into old habits again, but truly does try for the most part.
Though he doesn't have an attitude, per se, there may be moments when he gives pushback on an order he considers harmful or a waste of time-- he'll object with courtesy, but it can be hard to budge him without shouting him down.

Gabranth

[personal profile] archademode 2021-10-18 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Player: cobalt
Character: Gabranth
Division: Forces

Routine:

Every day is the same, provided he's not in the field: up before sunrise to train, eats meager rations while combing over the latest intel and assignments before setting off for patrol (or ferrying armaments, or assisting local refugees, or sorting equipment, or testing the viability of it etc). Ration lunch at noon, a brief one hour period where he's often unavailable or unreachable, and then more of the prior tasklist until evening, when he returns to train after sunset, polish and clean his armor, and then disappears early for the night.

It's an unbreakable schedule, only tweaked by larger missions or assignments.
Most of his time is spent: within the Gallows, all of it. Anywhere.

Sparingly can be found: in Kirkwall proper, outside of Kirkwall on general patrol

Demeanor:

He's impressively quiet, and even more so when focusing on work or filing reports: non-physical work is a much tougher endeavor for him, and because of it there's no stressing how vital peace and quiet is to his mind.

Space:

Overall tidy: houses a collection of spare quills and parchment (for all the mistakes he's prone to make when he's interrupted or disturbed by commotions around him), occasionally there is a locket set inside the drawers, tied with ribbon.

If you take it, or touch it, he will kill you himself. With his bare hands.

He is serious. He absolutely will.

Typical Division Work:

Lends a helping hand with training if someone is in need, ferries armaments, checks their quality, stockpiles scrap, routinely patrols (just about every other day if not every day at times) and brings spared supplies either to Riftwatch's own stockpiles or to the now-local refugees that've fled from northern territories.

Cleans everything he uses with diligent care, prioritizes getting every assignment, report, and catalog of information submitted on time— or sooner than that, if it can be helped.

Project(s):

Currently not involved with any projects due to the ramping up of the war itself, that'll likely change once I come back from the voidpit of unable to function. Skills are:
。intimidating to a fault. professionally so
。highly skilled at combat, swordplay, tactical maneuvering, leadership and just about any other wartime battle-related skills you can think of
。magically inclined, though he works with elemental magic only, and in shorter bursts channeled (most often) through his blades
。ridiculously strong
。has a neat helmet with spooky horns that sometimes makes people run away just from looking at him— though the sorts that scatter are deffo the weakest of the weak

Other Work:

Literally anything. Maintaining infrastructure, tending to animals or offering additional shifts, etc. They've a war to win, he'll see it done.

Good For:
。fighting anything and everything, even if it's a wall, or the ocean, or a whole damn pack of enemies
。training of any shade, magical or otherwise
。physical labor, gruntwork included: Gabranth never turns up his nose at anything so long as it's for the cause

Bad For:
。diplomacy, science, tact, charm
。behaving like a normal person; he has trouble with Thedosian culture in general for the most part
。delicate endeavors. all of them

Leadership Style:

Gabranth praises little and expects a lot: his baseline demands are competence, clarity, and unwavering commitment to the war effort itself. He assumes those serving alongside him are as dedicated as he is, and that they'll hold themselves to his own equally lofty standards without flinching.

If they fail to, they'll hear about it immediately, in the sternest possible fashion.

Subordinate Style:

Woof woof he's a dog, tell him to do it and it's done, so long as it's for Riftwatch and not something sketchy enough to smell strange to his stunted senses. Given that he's all too easily lied to, this isn't usually a problem regardless, but still. He aims to do the right thing, even if the task is dishonorable, or the means required to accomplish something positive are reprehensible in their make, etc.

Basically, he'll do just about anything if it can be justified.

Player: Oscar
Character: Allumin
Division: Research

Routine:
  • Sometimes late to start work, but then also usually late to leave work as a result. Often either at his desk, but if not there then he can be found nearby in the Project Felandaris office.
  • Takes a fitness break from desk work in the mid-afternoon usually, where he can be found at the training grounds trying to be better with a staff for magic purposes or dabbling in sword practice.
  • Before joining a division he would borrow books from the library if he had trouble sleeping, but now sometimes he just returns to the offices for an hour or a few and just does more work. This means you can definitely find him working between the hours of midnight to 3am or whatever the Thedosian time equivalent is.

  • Demeanor:
  • Allumin is relatively reclusive in most tasks unless actively assigned a partner for something. He will often just disappear into his work with singular focus and completely disregard the outside world that he either won't hear if someone is trying to get his attention or be completely startled by outside communication and practically jump out of his seat with a yelp. Flip a coin!
  • Fidgety sitter. Often readjusting sitting position, desk tapping, the bouncy leg.

  • Space: Messy when he is at the desk working, every square inch of real estate used to its maximum potential. When he is not working, he neatens everything that is still a work-in-progress into organized piles atop his desk to come back to later, and if he is going to be gone on any sort of fieldwork then things get put away into the drawers or filed away where they go, leaving his desk top cleared off until he returns. Drawers are all unlocked except for one, and if you pick the lock it's just his personal tea cup he got for himself so please leave it alone.

    Typical Division Work:
  • Doing: Reviewing the filing system to learn where and how things are organized, Documenting/Updating documentation of relevant books currently available in the library to things on file (starting with Rift and Veil studies, because priorities) and filing that information with those documents, Catching up on previous research findings that are accessible to him to learn about what Riftwatch has been up to - you know, boring paperwork stuff
  • Avoiding: Any sort of testing for anything at the moment (the sweet taste of hubris holds him back from the fun part of science), most work that involves going out and talking to people

  • Project(s): Felandaris

Other Work: He probably helps put books away at the library and organizes the shelves as well. He might also be seen occasionally helping at the horse stables.

Good For: Do you need to carry a ridiculous amount of heavy books, or something else just as hefty? Has your tea or coffee gone cold? Allumin might be able to help with that!

    Bad For:
  • Allumin. Allumin, that's - that's too many books - that's, no, put some back, no that's still too many, Allumin please.
  • Tendency to panic when under pressure, and then make bad judgement calls.
  • Talking to people outside of Riftwatch, and also sometimes within Riftwatch.

  • Leadership Style: Nervous initially about delegating tasks and overseeing work, but if he feels like he's not being listened to or taken seriously then he will become firm and much more serious. More likely to work alongside and be a part of whatever a task is rather than solely delegate and oversee, which might be awkward to work with if he has a serious attitude shift as he has less of a sense of humor and generally becomes more intense.

Subordinate Style: Generally receptive to taking orders, with the occasional voiced skepticism or other comment. Prefers to work on a project to completion but if going to someone with questions it is never just one, it is always an assortment of questions that do and sometimes don't relate to each other. Occasional attitude, but usually hard-working and occasionally skittish worker.

    Player: c
    Character: Abby Anderson
    Division: Forces

Routine: The bulk of her time is spent in the field doing work, exploring, or walking herself. If she's in the Gallows, she can be spotted in the training yard more often than not, and the library, tucked into a corner. Sometimes, she lingers near the infirmary. She likes the marketplace very much. Abby keeps late hours and a truly dismal sleep schedule (an F in resting) but spends those wee small hours in her room with a book or out exercising in the dark under the pretense of 'wearing herself out'.

Demeanor: Blunt, can be standoffish, obviously a very tense young woman, notable in the way that she typically holds herself (straight-backed). She's quick and sarcastic, and makes a lot of bad jokes around people that she's comfortable with. If you want to know how much Abby likes you, simply compare how much she playfully bullies you with others. She has a bad habit of clenching her jaw, so workmates close by may get an earful of teeth getting ground down to stumps.

Space: Abby barely uses her desk (though she has placed a card up at the top corner that she's written A. Anderson on to indicate that this desk belongs to her don't touch). Everything that is there is sorted, but also all over the place. It's organised by her standards, but you'd be forgiven for looking at it and having no idea how the fuck she works like this. Typical bonus sights include books that have been dog-eared, and empty, used mugs (she'll do dishes later...). Her coin collection is safely in her room so don't even fucking try it

Typical Division Work: Guard duty is fine but not her favourite. She'll hunt for game in pairs, or threes (she's a dab hand at tracking animals). Helping out in the training yard is what she likes to do the most, any manual labour is fine, assignments are typically snapped up. She point-blank avoids the griffons and any related duties.

Project(s): N/A for now, but I'm going to nose through at some point

Other Work: Maintaining armour/weaponry. Scavenging for the infirmary stock-list, willing to help out if anybody needs any minor first-aid. Shelving books in the library (not the best task to give her, she'll inevitably get distracted).

Good For: Muscle for hire, if you're heading out somewhere dangerous and you need extra back-up. Will run you around the training yard at literally any hour of the day. Knows a hell of a lot about bulking up, strength-training, weight-lifting, you name it. (and yoga?? a tiny whisper, on the wind)

Bad For: Doesn't know how to conduct herself in fancy/formal settings and will be outright awkward at best. Unused to fighting people who can use magic. Has a debilitating phobia of heights and would most likely become a liability immediately if she were forced to deal with that in a combat situation.

Leadership Style: Abby can take charge if she has to. She won't be charismatic about it, or give any stirring speeches. She'd rather put her head down and get the work done. Used to working on a team but if she doesn't like you, everybody else will hear about it.

Subordinate Style: Again, used to putting her head down and getting the work done. Prone to back-chat but ultimately prepared to listen to whoever is in charge and hear them out before she decides whether she's going to follow the orders or not. Has no qualms with taking matters into her own hands if she has to do it for the benefit of herself or people she's close with. Has an interesting past relationship with betraying her own side, but she's keeping that one on the down low.

    Character: Cole
Division: Scouting! (I finally remembered to put in for that!)

Routine: Cole is a ghost in more ways than one. For now, he is still getting used to being a member of Riftwatch, let alone a regular member of a group of people in general - so he isn't ever at his deck, but can be found roaming the Gallows or Lowtown, looking for people to help in whatever time he's got. Where'd that mug of tea come from when you were thinking you needed it? That book wasn't there a moment ago! Small unseen conveniences are frequently Cole's doing.

Demeanor: Cole is relatively unobtrusive in group spaces - being able to go invisible will do that, after all. When you can see him, though, it must be confessed that he has habits that may be considered a little...creepy. He tends to stare without blinking much, creeps silently through corners, and forgets that being able to read a person's pain and blurting out about it is maybe not how humans behave. He also comes and goes from the desk area very, very late at night - does he sleep? (He doesn't.)

Space: Cole's desk is present, but it will be almost never used for work. You will almost never see him there, but you will see strange knick-knacks and random objects come and go from the desk occasionally - fruit, books, feathers, small toys, jars, bottles of wine, you name it.

If your character takes anything from the desk, Cole will assume they needed it.

Typical Division Work: He is largely illiterate at the moment and is little help with paperwork - but his ability to go unseen makes him very good at fieldwork and surveying, and with a bit of training he would be open to other tasks. If someone trusts him with something, he WILL try his best. He's not afraid to go scouting alone, but understands that he is a somewhat uncertain thing, being a Spirit.

Project(s): None yet - but he would be willing to join one if it suited.

Other Work: As mentioned above, Cole is the Ultimate Gofer. He does his absolute best to be helpful 24/7, and will try his hand at any task necessary...but mostly, he's happy to fetch things for people. He may also tend to the animals and gardens on and off, when he can feel they need attention and others are busy.

    Good For:
    - Sneaking!
    - Getting into people's heads, for better or worse
    - Being there when you need him

    Bad For:
    - Reading and writing
    - People skills
    - Being a Spirit!!!! Oh no!!!!

Leadership Style: Cole would not call himself a leader. If someone needed rescuing and he was the only one who could pull them out, he will do what that person needs...but if you were to put him at the head of a group, he would be unsure of his capacity to make decisions that make sense to others.

Subordinate Style: On the other hand, Cole takes orders very well! It may take a little extra explaining, but once he understands what you want from him, he will always do his best. If the task seems like it will do more harm than help, however, he will contest it - and if he realizes that there is no changing minds about it, he is likely to try and make everyone present forget that he was ever about to be involved.

    Player: Vin
    Character: Diabhall Minett
    Division: Research

Routine: Time spent at the desk is evenly split with time in the field studying - he is always at his desk in the morning (EARLY morning) for a couple of hours, organizing himself for whatever his tasks are that day. On days where he remains at his desk, he can be seen working through paper after paper, barely leaving to eat. On days where he does not tether himself to his desk, he can commonly be found out and around, doing studies and sketches of buildings, structures, you name it.

He tends to relax late at night, usually by visiting the bathhouse or reading in the library.

Demeanor: Damn near robotic, to be perfectly honest. It can actually be hard to get his attention once you get him going - he tends to laser-focus and fail to depart from his work. He is silent, and it doesn't seem like he even realizes if anyone around him is making noise. The only thing that CAN get under his skin is if you touch anything on his desk while he is working - that will get you a stern, steely stare until you either put it back or explain yourself.

Space: His desk is much like him - spartan, extremely tidy, and bookish. When he is present, he optimizes his space with what he is working on, no more and no less. When he isn't there, everything is in neat stacks, squared off as if he used a ruler to place it. You might find sketches of architecture, material samples, and blueprints among his many sketchbooks and research tomes. He uses a glass dip pen, which he keeps tucked in a drawer when he is not there.

If anything is out of place, he WILL notice. He may not say anything, but if he works out who did it, they will get a stern reminder that he puts things where he would like them to stay.

Typical Division Work: Diabhall is more than happy to take on anything appropriate to his skillset - he is not above any of the indexing, information requests in the pipeline, or inventory work that needs done. He is, however, extremely bright and quick to understand tasks, and his preferences tend towards things that use his skills as an architect - he has taken swiftly to sample collection and testing suitability for building.

Project(s): Not currently - but he may well join Project Felandaris in the near future, given his history with research into arcane manipulation in his own world.

Other Work: Diabhall is definitely unafraid to roll his sleeves up and assist with structural maintenance for the Gallows themselves. Anything where his knowledge can be of help he is happy to assist - he's even working on learning some of the local languages. He is also a capable fencer and would be willing to spar and/or teach another person to fence.

    Good For:
    - Architect skills!
    - Clerical work
    - Well-documented experiments

    Bad For:
    - Emotional labor
    - Brute strength
    - Boosting morale

Leadership Style: In spite of how severe he is, Diabhall is a good leader. Far from a drill sergeant, he understands the need to delegate the right tasks to the right person, and sees no use in pounding a square peg into a round hole. Generally speaking, if it's something he is not an expert in, he is open to input and will collaborate...but if it's something he DOES feel like an expert in, he can be a bit condescending.

Subordinate Style: Happily, he is content to be a subordinate in most cases. He takes orders and direction very well, and is generally a team player - although if he sees a more efficient way to handle something, he will say so.

    Player: Lana
    Character: Edgard
    Division: Forces

Routine: Edgard is not one who likes to keep still. He tries to go out on the field as much as possible, will sometimes be on the training grounds, and will definitely spend as much time with animals as anyone will allow him. He does go to his desk sometimes because he's been told he must, so he's in the process of creating a sculpture out of various supplies he finds near his desk.

Demeanor: Edgard doesn't particularly get along well with other people because he has kind of a gruff demeanor sometimes, but he can't help not talking to people around him. Chatty feels like the wrong word here, more easily bored?? He will be the one making the noises that annoy people. He has a good heart, but is definitely a shit stirrer.

Space: It's an absolute disaster and he's making a sculpture that is a tower that's getting higher and higher. It hasn't fallen yet, but it might.

Typical Division Work: Edgard does a lot of field work and particularly likes jobs that seem to be clearly helping people. He hates things that seem pointless to him and paperwork would be absolutely the highest form of irritation to him.

Project(s): Edgard is not, however, the Invisible Hands, his bandit group, went down due to someone getting infected by red lyrium and he has yet to disclose this to anyone but it could lead him in a Project Sashimiri direction. Also, he got an eluvian in a recent mission and that could send him in a Project Felandaris direction. I don't know if Edgard is intelligent enough to be of any use in either of these, but I'd love for him to have more to work with.

Other Work: He's seriously obsessed with the griffons and horses. Animals are better than people and don't grouch at him. He also has thought that there is someone secretly stealing silverware and kitchen items in the gallows and has lowkey been investigating this. There are not, but my greatest wish is for Edgard to accidentally find out something juicy while investigating this stupid thing. Please someone, anyone, take me up on this.

Good For: 1. He is an absolutely excellent bowman and has pretty excellent aim in general. If he can see it and throw it, he can probably hit it
    2. He has a strong moral compass and if there is something very clearly unjust going on, he will do everything in his power to correct it. I don't know that he would be known for this, but it's true.
    3. He is excellent with animals and how to handle them and also may have a personal on again off again relationship with the farrier

Bad For: 1. He could use some better people skills/ he could be forced to have to talk to people and it not go to shit
    2. He is not sneaky nor subtle and could use some help with that. He has only done undercover things ok when they convince him it's some kind of game and they're pretending.
    3.Being clean???

Leadership Style: He's only been in charge once and he was extremely stressed out! He really wanted to prove himself and so he just got angry at everyone. It didn't really go well. He's probably too insecure for this, but please put him in charge more, lol.

Subordinate Style: Edgard has a tremendous problem with authority and while he will generally follow orders, he will also generally find a way to do it his own way. He will make it clear though that he's following orders because he agrees with what's happening. He is not into hierarchies and though he won't always talk about it, you can count on him to push back. He almost never calls people by formal titles.

    [personal profile] icasm 2021-10-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
    Player: Era
    Character: Loki
    Division: Diplomacy

Routine: Loki has a desk in the Diplomacy work office. Has he ever sat at it? Difficult to say. Probably not yet, actually, but when he does, it'll be to do something obnoxious like nosily eat an apple while others are writing.

    Sorry y'all.

He doesn't live in the Gallows anymore (thanks Alexandrie) so his routine is all in the de la Fontaine apartments in Hightown. He wakes up late, takes breakfast, makes tea, forgets about tea in favor of reading books, etcetera.

Demeanor: Very chatty, very nosy, very interested in what you're doing over there, thanks. You'll probably have to tell him that he needs to keep quiet/mind his own business/leave you alone.

Space: There is nothing on his desk except a small image of a snake carved into the wood of the desk top. He'll add one every three months.

Typical Division Work: Going to parties. Listening to rumors. Starting rumors. Causing sanctioned trouble. Causing unsanctioned trouble. You know, basic chaotic shit.

Project(s): He'd probably be best suited for Jeshavis, honestly, but he's not going to get involved with that himself directly for a while yet. Too selfishly disinterested.

Other Work: None, really. Look he's not here to work, he's here to look pretty and get up to mischief for the cause.

Good For: Starting shit (rumors, problems, etcetera). Knowing where to get "the good stuff", whatever that may be (extravagant goods and materials at high prices or things that are otherwise difficult to find, also usually at high prices).

Bad For: Things that will make him physically dirty. Group bonding exercises. Anything where he has to be quiet for too long.

Leadership Style: He's actually not that bad of a leader once you get to the brass tacks of a thing, but getting to that point is going to be insufferable. He is good at evaluating the skills of others, though, and understanding what is needed in order to get the outcome he wants. He's also good at synthesizing the

Subordinate Style: The question here, really, is how much does Loki respect the person giving him the orders. Because if he doesn't, you might as well be discussing things with a very well-spoken toddler who is just waiting until you leave the room to do what they want to do anyway, and fuck your input. If he has reason to respect the orders, or where they're coming from (or even just recognize someone as being in a position of power where not listening to them would cause him more trouble than he feels it's worth) then he'll listen. He won't do the letter of the law, here, but he's definitely good for getting to the spirit of a thing.

    Player: Rock
    Character: Richard Dickerson
    Division: Research, ostensibly

Routine: Works most often in the field, records rooms, various offshoot storage rooms and labs where he can work with old acquisitions/samples, or his personal quarters. Seldom seen crossing through the work room, nevermind seated at a desk.

Demeanor: Within the Gallows: reserved, chilly, brusque to the point of bristling at unsolicited commentary or critique, particularly from Management. Deliberately difficult to track down. Marginally more personable during card games or excursions into Kirkwall. In the field: task/objective oriented, a people-watcher, keeps sociably close to any given team but is slow to warm to conversation.

Space: Drawers locked but largely empty, surface clean. The desk in his room is clearly where he accumulates most of his materials and is lousy with borrowed texts and notes written in a jumble of Abyssal and Draconic.

Typical Division Work: Assesses, preserves, stores, and organizes field samples, particularly biological specimens. He conducts dissections where needed and documents significant findings. Has a particular penchant for monsters and terrible creatures of all sizes, including the Fade-touched nugs currently being housed in a storage room under the Gallows. Will also investigate pathologies that affect sentient members of Riftwatch. Avoids mechanical or weapons-centric research, seems to have an intense distrust of “advanced science” or anything that might qualify as a “device” in general.

Project(s): He’s been tangentially involved in rift research by virtue of participating in research missions but is deeply distrustful of the devices used to “take measurements.” He’s more curious about the nature of rifts, the ways they warp their environments, and what being contaminated with a rift shard means for the bearer.

Other Work: Occasionally assists with healing in the infirmary, much more likely to provide that service in the field. His criminal and espionage skill sets mean he sometimes tags along on scouting missions, particularly ones with crossover into research.

Good For: Elfroot (weed), discreet healing off the books, experimenting with magic.

Bad For: Mechanical tinkering, scientific testing, office morale.

Leadership Style: Prefers to use someone who likes leading and is well-liked to proxy head anything that might require delegation, navigation, direction, etc. Will typically only take point himself in dire straits and then with a mind for damage mitigation and practical survival. Conscious of group/individual morale in the field and will address it to keep a mission moving regardless of whether or not he’s in charge.

Subordinate Style: Quietly open about his dislike of Tony Stark (and Riftwatch in general) but will fulfil most duties as assigned. Manipulates paperwork in small ways under the belief Stark is unlikely to pay close attention or care. Borderline suspiciously quiet about what he’s up to at any given time.

    Player: Rock
    Character: Vincent Rovente
    Division: Forces

Routine: Scarce desk presence, most often On Duty in whatever capacity he can manage this fresh on the scene. Trains early in the morning and goes straight to work from there.

Demeanor: Casually confident, inclined to feel people out through conversation, particularly when he detects tension. Clearly does not know what to think about rifters or the sheer density of apostate mages scrabbling around in the Gallows unfettered but doesn’t seem anxious about them. Rarely seen relaxing in public. Takes his work seriously.

Space: Locked, tidy, documentation in order. No decor.

Typical Division Work: Reluctant to get his hands dirty in a menial capacity but doesn’t mind being on his feet all day. Most in his element staying engaged in the field, on guard duty, on escort duty, etc, or overseeing shipments, inventory acquisition, supplies and the like.

Project(s): Potentially of assistance with Haven given he is a Chantry loyalist here at least in part as a positive presence and envoy. Otherwise good for killing demons for rift research or in general as an escort through dangerous territory.

Other Work: Will peruse records to be nosy and to get himself up to speed, spends more time maintaining his personal set of armor and weapons than is probably totally necessary. Making himself available for confrontation is a job in itself, as he is inclined to let the apostates of Riftwatch chomp on him however they feel they need to for him to get a read on their deal and build working relationships.

Good For: Anti-magic, Templar dogma, hunting people on the run.

Bad For: Apostate vibes, fathoming what a rifter even is if not a demon.

Leadership Style: Patient authoritarian/hands on dad. Expects orders to be followed when he gives them but recognizes the likelihood of meeting resistance in his current position. Will allow good people to make mistakes they can learn from the hard way and be ready to provide support or murder as needed when it all goes wrong, provided the risk is to them and not to anyone else. Prefers to lead on the ground rather than issuing orders to be carried out from afar.

Subordinate Style: Comfortable following orders that seem sound and on the level according to Templar and/or common sense logic. Will be shady about shady orders. Independent for a working Templar here under Chantry orders, but it’s been a weird decade. May not follow orders issued by rifters or apostates if the circumstances seem in any way nefarious or otherwise mysterious.

    Character: Val de Foncé
    Division: Research

Routine: has never seen his desk and if you told him he had a desk, he'd be extremely surprised. would the desk not be better served in the hands/beneath the ass of another? Val is a field research kind of scholar, and if he's not out in said field he can be found in his personal workroom, which is in a Gallows cellar room and typically has a small thread of smoke eking out from beneath the door, and suspicious noises. occasionally he can be spied in the more general workrooms, or in the library, but he will walk very quickly away from anyone who might seem to want something from him and will pretend not to hear anyone calling his name.

Demeanor: Val does not like to collaborate (unless your name is Freddie, Jehan, or, much to his surprise and regret, Wysteria). he does like to offer unsolicited opinions on the work of others, which does sometimes develop into collaborative efforts. the less charitable would find this an annoying habit but there is no use in trying to get him to stop when he knows better than everyone.

    Space: desk: untouched.

his workroom, meanwhile, is chaotic. the door is routinely and securely locked, and its windows are far too narrow for most thieves to slip in. should you be granted access or a brief glance inside, you will find a long worktable completely covered with parchment and books and inkpots and quills and feathers and loose bones and pieces of stone and plates of half-eaten food or dirty wine glasses, and a comfortable well-worn monster of an armchair beneath which slumbers a mysterious clacking creature, and maps and diagrams and pieces of writing tacked directly to the walls, and bookshelves that are stacked to the ceiling with books and vials and jars and, you know, things.

Typical Division Work: none. never. too much to do for himself. but he always has a spare moment for acquiring records and artefacts, artefact preservation, collecting samples, identifying species, and testing materials and designs for equipment.

Project(s): none. never. too much to do for himself. (maybe Felandaris.)

Other Work: Val's personal projects are all to do with animals, architecture, siege engine design, and demolition. and he is VERY busy, obviously, but in between these pursuits, he also helps to maintain and do budget improvements on the Gallows structure (and it's such a sad small budget), do cursory checks of the horses and any Riftwatch animals (no mucking out stables or anything), and writes letters complaining about the pathetic state of the Gallows library to anyone who might donate a book in sympathy.

Good For: obscure animal facts, explosions, exploration of dangers.

Bad For: delicate conversations, long extended combat, emotional labor.

Leadership Style: commanding and impatient. he is not a good teacher and he typically ends up being condescending even when he doesn't mean to be.

Subordinate Style: terrible subordinate. he avoids work and responsibility at all costs. if cornered he usually ends up being condescending even when he doesn't mean to be. he can be tricked into helping with things if you frame your request in a way that seems like a challenge or a puzzle or if you can appeal to his ego.

    Character: Matthias
    Division: Forces
    Leadership Role: Forces Assistant

Routine: as Forces Assistant, Matthias arrives right on time to the Forces office and usually leaves right on time. he's very careful not to be caught watching the sundial but he's not as subtle as he thinks he is. he presides over the weekly Forces meetings, taking detailed notes to be provided to Flint later (when Flint is not in attendance, which is pretty typical) and muddling his way through any questions posed by members of the Division. during the other hours of his workweek, he copies reports and takes notes and steers people away from Flint's office. that being said, he'll eagerly accept opportunities to be away from his paperwork and train in the yard (magic or otherwise), run messages that require him to leave the Gallows, and accept missions that seem cool and bold and interesting.

Demeanor: he is extremely chatty but his pride often gets in the way of him asking for help on things problems until they get desperate. instead he might strike up a conversation and, if someone seems like they might be able to help, he'll not-so-subtly trawl for answers to his questions. he fidgets a lot while he's working--sighs a lot, mutters under his breath, drums his fingers, scratches his head, twirls his hair--all of which is probably very annoying.

Space: his is the desk of someone striving for perfection and neat order but who is easily distracted. which is to say: a bit of a mess, with a scheduled cleaning once every other fortnight. he is responsible enough to lock away any sensitive pieces of correspondence or reports, and suspicious enough/concerned enough about what Flint thinks of him to be wary of anyone hanging around his desk trying to sneak peeks. his desk doesn't have any personal touches to it, unless you count crumpled pieces of parchment.

Typical Division Work: beyond copying reports and taking notes and doing assistant-type duties, Matthias is willing to do just about anything asked of him. he's particularly suited for manual labor but he will complain less if it's cool and interesting work--missions and assignments which might require force and some violence and combat--and is always quick to volunteer for guard duty and patrols.

Project(s): none atm but Sashamiri seems like a fit.

Other Work: takes shifts on guard duty, helps in the infirmary, assists where he can with the work of other Divisions and projects (especially if he has friends working them).

Good For: starting fires. dealing with mages. talking a lot.

Bad For: subtlety. watercrafts of every kind. being quiet. dealing with Templars.

Leadership Style: he starts out gruff and a little impatient but warms quickly to anyone showing any talent or skill or even interest. he tends toward a little teasing and sarcasm but will give genuine praise when it's deserved. bonus points for mages.

Subordinate Style: as long as he respects someone or wants to win their approval, he behaves excellently and takes orders with minimal balking or resistance, and minimal backtalk. a lack of respect will mean a lack of cooperative spirit and lots of backtalk, though he strives not to get reported over it and will grudgingly do as he's asked. bonus points for any mage.

Character: Lady Seeker Theophania (Tiffany) Hart
    Division: Diplomacy

Routine: An early riser, Tiffany can be found at her desk in the midmorning for a few hours, fewer than one might expect from a responsible Seeker of Truth. She is more likely to be found out in the training yard, doing her own drills and offering suggestions and support to anyone who looks like they might need it. She visits Kirkwall and any neighboring villages often, and signs up for whatever fieldwork might benefit from a muscly supporter of the Chantry and basic human rights.

Demeanor: Conversational if not outright chatty, Tiffany prefers to collaborate on work. She has strong observational skills and can usually tell if someone is putting out don't-talk-to-me signals. She tends to braid and rebraid her hair when she's stressed out but she is otherwise fairly contained and poised and quiet.

Space: very neat, drawers locked, everything put away when she's done with it. Two small personal effects in the form of a dried wild rose in a vase and a small carving of Andraste. Please be nice and don't fuck with them :)

Typical Division Work: prefers to work in refugee aid, meeting with visitors, liaising with allies, helping out in the kitchens, and offering her skills in diplomacy with nobles and local officials. Less eager to work crowd control, negotiate with merchants, and will not write propaganda please and thank you.

Project(s): most likely to be involved in Project Haven since she deeply cares about the Chantry's image problem. I'll get her there eventually.

Other Work: always the first to volunteer for garden duty and maintaining armor, checking supplies, and helping with cooking or serving food. She can often be found in the Gallows chapel, cleaning and lighting candles and singing hymns to herself (unless someone wants to join, which she is cool with). Tends to be extra careful whenever she's partnered with mages and Rifters but also just soldiers on and smiles a lot.

Good For: singing whole sections of the Chant from memory, lifting heavy things, giving good sword pointers.

Bad For: sabotage, espionage, doing accents.

Leadership Style:Extremely hands-on and encouraging. Think the best third grade teacher. Good at sussing out people who need help but are too afraid or shy to ask and boldly offering them the friendliest help.

Subordinate Style: A model subordinate except if you ask her to like violate any vows or break any of her own code of honor. Then she'll politely but firmly refuse and walk away.

    Character: Captain Darras Rivain
    Division: Forces
Leadership Role: Vice-Admiral (what? him? how.)

Routine: he's much more likely to be caught in the Scouting office. puts in exactly enough of his own desk time at his own desk to file reports, avoid office mates, and gather up correspondence/reports/whatever for Yseult to read to him later. if you want to meet with him, you better have a fast walk and know how to swim or sail/row/whatever a boat because he's down at the docks doing boat stuff.

Demeanor: very friendly when you start talking to him, always down to offer an ear or advice or an opinion or whatever you might need. tends to share less of what he might be working on or thinking about.

Space: completely untouched. the OCEAN is his desk.

Typical Division Work: he will do literally anything that involves being at sea. do you want a quick path to your next destination? here is a ship and here is the ocean and let's go. the best place to be is not on land. he is extremely reluctant to engage in any travel that involves horses, which cannot be trusted.

Project(s): no and he does not plan to be. ever.

Other Work: very good at roofing, digging ditches or trenches, and simple gardening tasks. he also likes to fish and brings his catches to the kitchens to be cooked (except for the very best stuff, which goes for Yseult's supper, sorry about it). has a lot of contacts of the seafaring and merchant variety and will gladly put you in touch with them, as long as you promise not to poison his relationship with them.

Good For: knot-tying, fishing, predicting the weather.

Bad For: horses. behaving with deference and respect toward visitors/nobles. empty gladhanding.

Leadership Style: brisk and friendly in the kind of way where he assumes you know what you're doing and can do it competently. tends to be surprised if you reveal you can't do said task; will tease a little but good-naturedly. fairly supportive and encouraging but also quick to put an end to someone really struggling and failing at something.

Subordinate Style: surprisingly decent for a pirate. as long as he has a level of respect for the order and the person issuing the order, he'll follow the order.

Character: Yevdokiya an Waslyna O Bearhold (Doki)
    Division: Diplomacy 👼

Routine: knows no desk or master. she is only ever outside, and usually in Kirkwall.

Demeanor: friendly to the point of invasive, Doki will pester anyone doing anything that looks interesting or amusing to her. of her own work (? does she work), she is secretive, jealous, and protective. enthusiastic about pranks and inconveniencing people. she can definitely turn on a sort of rough weirdo charm when it suits her. anything can annoy her when she is in the right mood but she especially detests people who chew loudly. meanwhile she picks her teeth and cuts her fingernails with her knife and her teeth, fully aware of how annoying she's being.

Space: she visited her desk long enough to leave an old egg in her desk drawer, and lock it.

Typical Division Work: her contribution to Diplomacy is that she does not involve herself that much in Diplomacy so everyone is safe from her influence. she is skilled at trading and bargaining and requisitions, as long as you don't ask too many questions about the previous owner of this barrel of beer. she is careful not to STEAL for Riftwatch but some creative bargaining is part of the game.

    Project(s): no thank you.

Other Work: she is passionate about taking care of horses in the right way, which is her way and involves a lot of folk remedies and homebrew tonics and things. she always volunteers for snow shoveling and expeditions that go to the mountain. she is usually running at least 3 cons and moonlights as a Lowtown pickpocket. will accept other work for a price.

Good For: making snowshoes, finding food when food is scarce, doubletalk.

Bad For: speaking other languages, writing neatly (if at all), accepting a direct order.

Leadership Style: asks "you got this?" and then nods and walks away no matter what you said.

Subordinate Style: prefers to be left alone forever. prefers you to be available for her to ask questions of or talk to idly.

    Character: Nikos Averesch
    Division: Scouting

Routine: would rather die than sit at a desk. can be reluctantly found there only because it provides a good flat surface to write on and is a short walk to the rookery. typically haunts the hallway outside the office to make sure no one is around before skulking in to do whatever work he might have to do. more likely to be off-site in the field or in a Lowtown tavern somewhere.

Demeanor: keeps to himself and glares at anyone trying to talk to him. especially about work which is none of your business. if he wants to start a conversation, he will do so very directly and forcefully. constantly putting out fuck-off vibes. unless you look like you have good gossip.

Space: untouched except for a very conspicuous ink stain that will not be scrubbed out. drawers always locked even when they're empty.

Typical Division Work: he takes as much field work as he can and prefers to be very far away from the Gallows. best at counter-intelligence, eliminating targets, bullying and blackmailing targets, and establishing contact with local resistances. detests any supply sabotage, long-term surveillance projects, and working in the cold.

Project(s): would never like to be involved in anything. that being said, he has a lot of contacts within small resistance groups. he's a good assassin. he's surprisingly sneaky.

Other Work: he tries hard to be away from any work that isn't field work. reluctantly useful at translation (written, he doesn't fluently speak anything except Trade, Antivan, and Nevarran) and at maths/sums/money.

Good For: throwing knives with accuracy. intense debates in casual settings. being unpleasant to people.

Bad For: slow plans. small talk. being pleasant to people.

Leadership Style: so abrasive and impatient you want to quit. and he wants you to quit. if you're tough enough to persevere and prove you can hang, he will let you, but he won't like it.

Subordinate Style: if you leave him alone and let him choose the work he wants to choose, he'll respect you quietly and darkly from afar. anything more hands-on and he'll start hissing like a threatened cat.

    Ket Perrino

    [personal profile] sohighandwild 2021-10-29 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
    Character: Ket Perrino
    Division: Scouting

Routine: She's not really a desk girl, and is only there if she actively needs to be writing correspondence or a report. More often, she's either on fieldwork assignments or spending her time in Kirkwall proper. She can, however, sometimes be found at the training grounds. She also usually eats breakfast and lunch in the dining halls before heading out.

Demeanor: She's friendly with everyone, but very much takes her cues from the other person. She's a bit warmer and franker with those she perceives to be commoners, and more arch/banter-y with nobility. (For rifters, she's going mainly by attitude, since she lacks context unless they've outright said anything.) She generally seems easygoing and is happy to help if asked.

Space: Her desk and her personal quarters are both neat and tidy. Given that she came to Kirkwall with very little, it's unclear whether she just continues to have few things, or if she keeps them somewhere that's not obvious.

Typical Division Work: Ket's strengths are generally shadowing people and eavesdropping in city environments, as well as working people in a variety of accents and disguises to pump them for info. She'll take work scouting in a non-city area if no urban stuff is available, but she hasn't substantially warmed to camping.

Project(s): TBD! None of them are obvious fits, but I'm still thinking about it for now.

Other Work: Ket makes herself available for any translation to or from Antivan or Rivani as a matter of routine. If needed, she also volunteers to help with the Gallows' general mending needs, as she's a surprisingly proficient seamstress.

Good For: Current Lowtown gossip; wine knowledge, especially Antivan vintages; saying yes if you need one more Scouting division agent or shard bearer on a particular project at the last minute

Bad For: Outdoor survival; combat that doesn't rely on playing dirty; reading other people's reports with much attention to detail unless it's to gather info for her own work

Leadership Style: So far she hasn't put herself forward for leading much, but the little she has, she's generally decisive but open to other ideas. She's a good listener, but not afraid to make a final call herself.

Subordinate Style: While not (intending to be) actually obnoxious, Ket is very attentive to orders, following them promptly and thoroughly. She prefers having latitude, but will check in regularly if asked. She generally keeps her head down and tries her best to make herself valuable.

    Cosima Niehaus

    [personal profile] youwonscience 2021-11-06 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
    Character: Cosima Niehaus
    Division: Research

Routine: Cosima is an indoor cat and also uses work to cope, which means she's usually in the Research work room or the Research library. She's slowly rebuilding her assigned desk into a tiny laboratory, and the microscope is not hers but she uses it a lot. She does generally remember to eat at normal meal times, normally in a dining hall, and she ventures out into Kirkwall now and then (usually Lowtown) to unwind.

Demeanor: While Cosima takes her work seriously, she's generally approachable and enthusiastic about potential collaboration. She especially loves comparing notes from different disciplines (or worlds) to try to make new connections. When she's not actively working, she's also warm and approachable. If you've talked before, or even if you haven't much, she says hi to you in the hallway.

Space: Her desk is a bit of an mess, but not in a sloppy way; just in a "she's doing like four things at once and don't MOVE that, it's important" kind of way. Her personal room is a little neater, though she's still a "throw clothes over the back of a chair" type of person. It's not filthy, just lived in.

Typical Division Work: Cosima splits her work between projects, as the two main areas of her focus are red lyrium and the effect of rifts on the surrounding environment. While both occasionally involve field work, she's much more comfortable designing and executing experiments in a controlled environment. She takes a lot of notes, and is happy to share them with anyone who asks.

Project(s): As per above, she's a member of both Project Sashamiri and Project Felandaris.

Other Work: She's not usually needed for non-Research work, but she's always happy to help in the infirmary if they need an extra set of hands.

Good For: Joining a game/dance/etc. if you need one more person; icebreakers in social situaitons; remembering details of her work accurately off the top of her head.

Bad For: Nearly any sort of combat (she has an anchor shard shiled she's not proficient with and has been taught some very basic self defense but that's fully it); pretending to be a Thedas native, or really any sort of deception-based work.

Leadership Style: She's very collaborative if she's taking the lead on a project or task. She'd much rather guide with a light hand and encourage everyone to fully participate than to plow forward on her own steam.

Subordinate Style: In general, Cosima sees the merit of oversight, though she is not shy about speaking up if a plan doesn't seem to make sense or has flaws she can easily see. She responds well to leaders who respect her intelligence and are secure enough to listen and respond to feedback. She's less great with "because I said so" or being talked down to.
overharrowed: (all the things I could have been)

    Julius

    [personal profile] overharrowed 2021-11-06 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
    Character: Julius
    Division: Diplomacy
Leadership Role: leader of Project Sashamiri

Routine: He's settled into a rough routine of spending the late morning in the library or otherwise on errands outside his office, and spending the hours between lunch and supper available for project business. He runs project meetings twice a week. In practice, he's often in his office after dinner too, though he seldom makes appointments then. Still, his door is usually open. He's fairly proactive in following up with people who've worked on Sashamiri projects if he needs more information. He makes an effort to be sociable, eating at normal mealtimes and attending social events without coercion.

Demeanor: Julius is a busy workaholic, but one who takes the time and effort to be charming, or at least warm. While he (by choice) has a lot to do, he does generally check in with people on the level of "oh, you mentioned a letter from your brother last time we talked, how is he?" etc. His air of affable competence is perhaps not for all tastes, but he does sincerely try to get on well with other Riftwatch agents across the board.

Space: Julius's office is clearly well used, but organized, with things he's not actively using in neat stacks or piles. He rarely, if ever, loses track of a report or a resource. His personal space is shared, but as far as it's up to him, it's neat without being meticulous.

Typical Division Work: His Sashamiri work is largely strategic, and means a lot of reports and letter-writing. He does enjoy the diplomacy assignments he's been given, but they're more often correspondence just for the practical reason that it's hard for him to be away from the Gallows at length unless it's a Riftwatch-wide endeavor.

Project(s): As mentioned, he's the leader of project Sashamiri.

Other Work: His Sashamiri responsibilties take up the lion's share of his time, but he does regularly visit the training grounds to keep in combat shape. He's happy to spar with/teach anyone who's interested, though his use to nonnative mages for the latter is limited.

Good For: Being able to carry on a pleasant conversation with almost anyone; nerding out over glyphs and wards if given the opportunity; reading (though not speaking) Orlesian or Ancietn Tevene.

Bad For: Nonacademic cultural references, especially from outside Ferelden; taking a firm position without acknowledging the merits of both sides (most of the time); running for more than short bursts.

Leadership Style: Julius's approach is usually to organize the shit out of his project. He's got several priorities underway at once, and he is able to split his attention between them because of a great deal of delegation. He's happy to field questions and listen to suggestions; he's sometimes weaker in pushing agents who are inclined to slack or who don't check in with him. He expects competence, and is sometimes stretched thin enough he's not going to push for it if it isn't there.

Subordinate Style: Julius is a contenitious subordinate, and his style reflects his own leadership approach. He offers regular and thorough reports, but otherwise expects he'll be left to his devices once he's proved his competence. He never minds checking in, but can sometimes forget he needs to ask permission rather than simply alerting his superiors to his plans.
