Activity Check: July - September 2023

ACTIVITY CHECK

This activity check is for JULY - SEPTEMBER 2023. The deadline to reply is OCTOBER 18. The previous AC check post is here for reference.

To pass AC you should provide a brief recap of what your character has been up to with at least three links to RP for the relevant time period. These links can be to posts you created, log threads, rookery/crystal threads, inbox threads, or open top-levels within plot posts.

You can use multiple threads from within the same post, such as three different logs branching from the same open prompt. You can use threads that started prior to the beginning of AC period as long as a substantial portion of tags occurred during this AC period and you haven't previously used that thread as proof. There is no minimum tag count per thread. (But if you're consistently providing primarily threads you dropped after a couple of tags, last-minute open posts you don't tag after checking the AC box, etc., we may contact you about that.)

RECAPS

Along with your links, you're providing a quick recap of what your character has been up to. The goal for this is to help everyone keep track of what's been happening, both with their own characters and with everyone else's–Riftwatch is a small enough organization that people are probably going to be aware of what everyone else is working on and any major/obvious interpersonal drama, so this is our OOC cheat sheet!

Recaps can be very brief. E.g., "Over the last three months, Paul went to Tevinter to assassinate a magister, had a fight with his best friend Joe, and learned how to use a crossbow." But you're also welcome to include more detail if you want, as long as you keep it to a couple of paragraphs max.

As far as handwaving goes, you can–as always–handwave interpersonal interactions with other characters and note those in your recap if you want a record of them. "Paul has continued to avoid Joe since their fight" with no thread showcasing the avoidance, for example. You could also handwave the whole fight! We don't care.

For work- and plot-related recap claims, however, you can only handwave your character's daily performance of their routine work. In between the more significant things you thread, we assume all characters are doing the Typical Work listed on their division wiki page. So you could say "Paul has been diligent about his work for the diplomacy division and met with a few minor nobles visiting Kirkwall to talk up Riftwatch," or "Paul has been distracted and struggling with his work for the forces division and stumbled through his routine patrols," etc., without proving that in a thread. No one has to RP paperwork or its equivalent. But we do encourage making up some Typical Work that your character has been working on during the AC period, to help ground your character in what's going on in the game world and clearly establish that they aren't only fighting with their friends or eating scones in Hightown, even if those are the only things you RP about.

What you can't purely handwave is anything significant or cool enough that other people would need to remember that it actually happened for future plot purposes–we'd define this as anything for which we normally require a plot request or a report, which we've previously provided some guidance on where those lines are here–or anything that's a significant achievement for your character rather than just daily grind stuff. Basically: if you want your character to do anything cooler than competently attending to their routine work, you've gotta RP about it somehow. That can mean RPing the actual event, or it can mean RPing discussion or planning or fallout around the event–but you have to RP something about it!

SPECIFIC CHARACTER SITUATIONS

NEW CHARACTERS: Characters who were apped during this AC period need to provide one link for each full month they were in the game. For example, for the AC period of January through March, a character apped in January would need two proofs because they were in the game for the full months of February and March (but it doesn't matter which month the two links were started in), a character apped in February would need one, and a character apped in March wouldn't need any links. Obviously you're welcome to include as many links as you have/want.

DIVISION HEADS & PROJECT LEADERS: This is where you now provide proof of your required war table assignment from the last three months. You can link to the OOC sign-up/info post. This link is in addition to your required three links for your character, not in place of it. As long as you've provided the OOC info people need to begin playing the mission within the AC period, it's fine if it's still ongoing.

OTHER LEADERS: You're required to provide proof of your character using their job in some way. This can be a war table assignment or player plot, if you chose to run one. But it can also just mean making sure that one of your AC proof links includes your character performing their job duties. E.g., the Head Archivist could link to a crystal announcement asking people to please stop dog-earing the books, a log in which they're reorganizing the library, or an inbox thread where they hound a specific person to stop hoarding library books in their bedroom.

BACKGROUND CHARACTERS: Everyone has to provide the required three links for at least one character every AC period. If you play multiple characters, then each period you can choose up to two to mark as background characters. Unlike the way side characters used to work, you can now rotate which characters you designate as background each AC period if you want, though characters with leadership roles of any kind cannot be backgrounded. You still need to provide a brief, vague-as-you'd-like recap of what they're doing in the background, so everyone else knows whether they're in the Gallows doing their work in the background or on an assignment abroad or whatever else, but you don't have to provide any links.

STRIKES

Failing to respond to AC at all will result in the character being swept.

If you fail to post any links at all for a character who isn't backgrounded, you'll have to drop them. If you post more than zero but fewer than three, you'll get a strike but can try again next quarter. If you fail to meet the three-link requirement for two quarters in a row you'll be required to drop a character. (As before, which character you drop will be up to you; it doesn't necessarily have to be the one you failed with.) This does technically mean that you could drag your feet for up to six months before dropping a character you've only written a single tag for in that time. We ask that you be kind to your CR and not do that. Again, if you seem to be abusing the system, we'll contact you to talk about it.

FORMS

Please post AC for all of your characters in a single comment! You only need to include the Player field once if you have multiple characters.

Character: Ellie
Background: N
Recap & Links: Like everyone else, Ellie had an extremely bad time in the wake of Granitefell. As soon as the opportunity to do something about it landed, she signed up to fight a dragon with kinda worrying alacrity. It paid off in the form of some tearful reunions and the most awkward sleepover the Gallows has yet hosted. In more normal news, she agreed to help the new Head Healer with the art for some handwashing propaganda.

Character: Mobius
Background: N
Recap & Links: Granitefell was really emotionally fraught. Dealing was hard! But deal he was going to do. Until the time travel plan was happening and sounded insane, and then Strange managed to work things around to make Mobius agree to take part in it, while trying to wrangle their own individual feelings. And take part he did. It was uhhhhh. Well, it worked! One way or another! With a trio of people who really have no business actually traveling in time. It's fine. Now that Wysteria is Wysteria-ing very hard, Strange also wants opinions, given the information he knows. (Spoilers several people now know the Templar addiction information, but shh.)

Character: Jayce Talis
Background: N
Recap & Links: Prior to the Riftwatch International Cultural Expo, Jayce and Abby had a somewhat awkward arm wrestling match in the dining hall prompted by Viktor. For the expo, Jayce and Viktor created a few minor life-improvement gadgets and a showstopper to gain approval and funding for further Riftwatch research.

Then, he accompanied Riftwatch on a mission to Granitefell and chatted about the (his) moral dilemmas of war with Clarisse before dying in the ambush. He was revived after the remaining members of Riftwatch (mostly) banded together to fuck around with time magic, then struggled with fears of inadequacy prompting a request to learn how to defend himself (whilst withholding the fact that he knows the basics of combat) (season 2, please explain). As his friendship with Viktor continued to deteriorate, he spent more time away from him, instead teaching Clarisse a certain smithing technique and learning melee combat under Barrow and Ellis' tutelage.

Incredibly, the next mission he accompanied to the Silent Plains did not result in any physical injury or death! Only grievous injury to his relationship with Viktor, though they remained professional whilst solving the mysterious artifact brought by Strange et al. After returning to the Gallows, he volunteered for Wysteria and Viktor's lyrium research, much to the latter's annoyance. #yolt

Prompted by Bastien's crystal post, Jayce has been working on small, metal coins and small, leather-bound journals for those involved in manipulating time to save those who died in Granitefell. He will probably be dispersing these items in fantasy!October.

Character: Flint
Leadership Proof: Oops, strike me. Let me know if there's anything special I need to do as make-up work.
Recap & Links: Sometimes you successfully outsource even more of your job, and then a bunch of Venatori immediately show up to wipe out a third of Riftwatch and it kind of just feels like adding insult to injury. When the survivors returned, Flint and Yseult shared a depressing sidebar that definitely wasn't a heart to heart between two friends. Fortunately, horrors are something you can occasionally enable your co-workers to undo. Unfortunately, that doesn't always shorten the to do list.

Character: Wysteria
Leadership Proof: Oops, all abuses of power
Recap & Links: Wysteria has had a few productive months of doing very important science. She inspired Orlesian academics to take up competitive roller skating, successfully resurrected her husband, and last but certainly not least nailed down a usefully diverse list of volunteers to expose to dangerously addictive narcotics. Everything's coming up de Foncé.

Character: Julius
Leadership Proof: As previously discussed, a strike this quarter, apologies.
Recap & Links: Early in the summer, Julius circled back to a conversation with Strange he'd been putting off and spearheaded a date night, in addition to his normal Sashamiri and Diplomacy duties. He managed to survive the attack at Granitefell, but god, at what cost? Still, despite his expressed sketpicism, he made it to experiencing the solution. He's been carrying on since but honestly, even weeks out, he feels a bit like a rung bell.

Character: Cosima Niehaus
Background: N
Recap & Links: Cosima represented Riftwatch at the Riftwatch Cultural Exposition, teaming up with Strange to demonstrate the wonders of the microscope to all and sundry (and also stopping by to get cookies). In planning for the expo, she and Strange also discussed potential longer term plans for some hearts and minds initiatives from Research. She then emphatically did not survive Granitefell. She's back now, and mainly throwing herself into work to cope.

Character: Vanya Orlov
Background: N
Recap & Links: Vanya took the initiative to tell both Ellie and Abby about a particularly fraught memory of Ellie's he experienced at Dirthamen, which honestly went better than he'd braced for. He also somehow found himself impersonating a highwayman yet again. In the aftermath of Granitefell, he had several moments of connection as the survivors tried to cope with what had happened. In the aftermath, he was also able to extend a moment of grace to a newcomer. He was much, much less successful at talking Wysteria out of her planned lyrium experiments, however.

Character: Stephen Strange
Background: N
Recap & Links: The good doctor has had a very busy quarter, starting off with attending the Riftwatch Cultural Exposition in Val Royeaux, primarily presenting on plaster casts, handwashing, and trying to teach Biology 101 germ theory alongside Cosima and her microscope. It was a crash course in diplomacy & teeth-gritting patience, which hopefully bodes well for the two of them starting up work on Theodosian diplomatic scientific outreach.

Then shit got derailed by the fact that everyone died!! Strange prepared the bodies with Derrica, which really put him through the emotional wringer re: the solemn duty of a healer, and tipped him over into realising he gives a damn about the people in this organisation & also caring about what good he can do within it. Before he could think more fully about that, though, he delved into unhinged experiments with time magic along with the other imagineers to reverse what happened at Granitefell. He gets to be very smug and insufferable about the fact that it succeeded, and he’s also started getting unduly interested in rift magic & dreamwalking via Tsenka.

More recently, although these will spill over into the next quarter: he and others went on a mission to the Silent Plains to assist Tertia’s people and came across a mysterious artifact; signed up for Wysteria’s lyrium experiments; and has now been promoted to Head Healer, so will start submitting leadership proofs with the next AC round. 👨‍⚕️👌

Additional loot obtained: A fancy cloak of Fade-touched silk which can occasionally make him invisible in battle.
Additional people who now call him Stephen: Derrica, Mobius, Gwenaëlle, and against his best efforts, Tsenka.

Recap & Links: Well well well. It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye. And do you ever get so traumatised from dying in a real-fake way that you crack and go smoke some weed with your Ellie?

Character: Gela
Background: N
Recap & Links: As you know, Gela had a small part to play in the Granitefell plot. And she played it just fine, if not very emotionally given the circumstances. Also I don't know if you all heard but Marcus actually thinks she is a traumatised mage baby which is still my favourite development of all time. because it is completely wrong and sos osososoosos funny (to me not to Gela)

Recap & Links: Clarisse and Abby went on a mission to fix a roof. Like a week later, Clarisse talked to some folks and then got her shit wrecked by a dragon at Granitefell. Character: Petrana de cedoux
Leadership Proof: Utilizing her office, grieving normal.
Recap & Links: Petra handled loss really well, honestly did a great job, and utilized her position to spread misinformation because either it wouldn't matter because of the time travel or because she didn't care. Great news, it was because of the time travel.

Character: Gwenaëlle Baudin
Background: N
Recap & Links: Gwenaëlle died, which sucked for other people. Coming back was a lot* and continued to be. She found time to be game and be involved, anyway.

Character: Joselyn Smythe
Background: N
Recap & Links: Joselyn presented in Orlais, which was fun, then supported Tony through committing time crimes, which was less so. She was keen to acknowledge Wysteria.

Character: Tsenka Abendroth
Background: N
Recap & Links: Tsenka lost her brother, executed his will, and didn't really believe they'd get him back. So things were looking up by September's end.

Character: Yseult
Leadership Proof: Link sign-ups only before I paused for death plot and then fell into an abyss I've yet to climb out of so doesn't count.
Recap & Links: Yseult went to Granitefell where Marcus saved her life (but to what end?), Byerly told her about his planned heroics (to what end??), and unfortunately survived to have to report back and deal with the aftermath. To make matters worse she then found herself having more than zero conversations about it, and then bet agains Tony Stark's Rifter Magic Crew, only for them to turn out to be right, which forced her to have an emotion in a public place. A month so bad it felt like three.

Character: Evelyn

Recap & Links: Died at Granitefell when Val de Fonce randomly handed her a book to hold for him mid-battle like a servant and then they got stepped on by a dragon. Gathered valuable intel about about dragon armpits though, so there's that.

It worked, so everything is fine now. More recently, he went on a field trip to the Silent Plains, where he helped bring weird vibes to the reassembly of a magical artifact. Character: Bastien
Background: N
Recap & Links: Kept calm while having his personal version of a meltdown about Byerly dying and skipped town after talking to people about their losses. Went to Kaiten for personal reasons before coming back to Kirkwall with most of an intention to sail out of it, but Iron Man showed up first. "Fought a dragon" (stabbed it and ran away) to facilitate a time warp. Came somewhat close to stabbing time travelers. Fortunately failed slowly warmed up to experiencing feelings again until the dam burst. Somewhere in there played a role in convincing Byerly it was okay to quit his job. Was mean to Edgard. Organized some gratitude.

Character: Redvers Keen
Background: N
Recap & Links: Had opinions about religious outbursts, time travel, and lyrium experiments. What opinions will he think of next??? Also caused a security lapse in a timeline that fortunately no longer exists so no one is allowed to be mad at him for it.

Character: Byerly
Leadership Proof: The Worlds' Fair (and there's another plot request in the backlog)
Recap & Links: Byerly had a bit of a time, because he died. Damn! And then he came back to life, but man, y'know, straight-up dying is pretty freaky, so now he's re-evaluating his priorities and has come to the decision that, actually, it's okay to do something kinda selfish. So he's quitting leadership to spend more time actually enjoying life.

Character: Nina Zenik
Background: N
Recap & Links: Nina has been running support this period, since, y'know, she didn't know many of the people who died. It's been depressing! And stressful! This has led her to occasionally become extremely overbearing in a toxic way, though sometimes she managed to stay just helpful. Anyway, things are now back to normal, so she can go back to feeling lonely and out of place in a normal way. And maybe grow some extra limbs or something.

Character: Tertia
Recap & Links: I have failed to do sufficient things with her and so she must be swept :(
