Activity Check: October – December 2023
ACTIVITY CHECK
This activity check is for OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2023. The deadline to reply is JANUARY 15. You can review prior AC posts here if needed.
To pass AC you should provide a brief recap of what your character has been up to with at least three RP links per character for the relevant time period. These links can be to posts you created, log threads, rookery/crystal threads, inbox threads, or open top-levels within plot posts.
You can use multiple threads from within the same post, such as three different logs branching from the same open prompt. You can use threads that started prior to the beginning of AC period as long as a substantial portion of tags occurred during this AC period and you haven't previously used that thread as proof. There is no minimum tag count per thread. (But if you're consistently providing primarily threads you dropped after a couple of tags, last-minute open posts you don't tag after checking the AC box, etc., we may contact you about that.)
RECAPS
Along with your links, you're providing a quick recap of what your character has been up to. The goal for this is to help everyone keep track of what's been happening, both with their own characters and with everyone else's–Riftwatch is a small enough organization that people are probably going to be aware of what everyone else is working on and any major/obvious interpersonal drama, so this is our OOC cheat sheet!
Recaps can be very brief. E.g., "Over the last three months, Paul went to Tevinter to assassinate a magister, had a fight with his best friend Joe, and learned how to use a crossbow." But you're also welcome to include more detail if you want, as long as you keep it to a couple of paragraphs max.
You can–as always–handwave interpersonal interactions with other characters and note those in your recap if you want a record of them. "Paul has continued to avoid Joe since their fight" with no thread showcasing the avoidance, for example. You could also handwave the whole fight! We don't care.
For work- and plot-related recap claims, however, you can only handwave your character's daily performance of their routine work. In between the more significant things you thread, we assume all characters are doing the Typical Work listed on their division wiki page. So you could say "Paul has been diligent about his work for the diplomacy division and met with a few minor nobles visiting Kirkwall to talk up Riftwatch," or "Paul has been distracted and struggling with his work for the forces division and stumbled through his routine patrols," etc., without proving that in a thread. No one has to RP paperwork or its equivalent.
What you can't purely handwave is anything significant or cool enough that other people would need to remember that it actually happened for future plot purposes–we'd define this as anything for which we normally require a plot request or a report, which we've previously provided some guidance on where those lines are here–or anything that's a significant achievement for your character rather than just daily grind stuff. Basically: if you want your character to do anything cooler than competently attending to their routine work, you've gotta RP about it somehow. That can mean RPing the actual event, or it can mean RPing discussion or planning or fallout around the event–but you have to RP something about it!
SPECIFIC CHARACTER SITUATIONS
NEW CHARACTERS: Characters who were apped during this AC period need to provide one link for each full month they were in the game. For example, for the AC period of January through March, a character apped in January would need two proofs because they were in the game for the full months of February and March (but it doesn't matter which month the two links were started in), a character apped in February would need one, and a character apped in March wouldn't need any links. Obviously you're welcome to include as many links as you have/want.
IC LEADERS: You're required to provide proof of your character using their job in some way. This can be a war table assignment or player plot, if you chose to run one. But it can also just mean making sure that one of your AC proof links includes your character performing their job duties. E.g., the Head Archivist could link to a crystal announcement asking people to please stop dog-earing the books, a log in which they're reorganizing the library, or an inbox thread where they hound a specific person to stop hoarding library books in their bedroom.
BACKGROUND CHARACTERS: Everyone has to provide the required three links for at least one character every AC period. If you play multiple characters, then each period you can choose up to two to mark as background characters. Unlike the way side characters used to work, you can now rotate which characters you designate as background each AC period if you want, though characters with leadership roles of any kind cannot be backgrounded. You still need to provide a brief, vague-as-you'd-like recap of what they're doing in the background, so everyone else knows whether they're in the Gallows doing their work in the background or on an assignment abroad or whatever else, but you don't have to provide any links.
STRIKES
Failing to respond to AC at all will result in the character being swept.
If you fail to post any links at all for a character who isn't backgrounded, you'll have to drop them. If you post more than zero but fewer than three, you'll get a strike but can try again next quarter. If you fail to meet the three-link-per-character requirement for two quarters in a row you'll be required to drop a character. (As before, which character you drop will be up to you; it doesn't necessarily have to be the one you failed with.) This does technically mean that you could drag your feet for up to six months before dropping a character you've only written a single tag for in that time. We ask that you be kind to your CR and not do that. Again, if you seem to be abusing the system, we'll contact you to talk about it.
FORMS
Please post AC for all of your characters in a single comment! You only need to include the Player field once if you have multiple characters.

LEADER CHARACTERS |

abby
Character: James Flint
Leadership Proof: Neither Boss Nor Employee Paid Enough To Deal With Their Colleagues
Recap & Links: Fought a dragon, forced his new colleague to do an errand with him, told Barrow that being anxious on behalf of everyone else is basically the whole point of being in a position of command, offered up a reading list, and plotted to conspire with the pirates of Estwatch. Normal events. Abnormal outlier: voluntarily suggesting to Yseult that they hang out outside of work.
Character: Wysteria de Foncé
Leadership Proof: Disappointing Bribe for New Boss Just a Loaf of Bread
Recap & Links: Hey everyone, want to do some drugs? Around gallivanting off to Tevinter to break nightmare generating artifacts, Wysteria focused on finally conducting her (and Viktor's, in memorium Dick Dickerson's etc) much discussed Lyrium Study to determine how lyrium affects rifters and those with anchors. And while she hasn't historically been a proponent for chopping off arms, her own experience coupled with Tony Stark's abrupt disappearance has seen Wysteria's position on the subject evolve to fully advocating that any rifter concerned with their continued existence in Thedas strongly consider amputation. Also, she and Viktor have had a falling out. But that has NOTHING to do with anyone's personal feelings being hurt through a series of comedic misunderstandings and everything to do with SOMEONE not apologizing very well and seeming to think he did nothing wrong by letting SOME PEOPLE make fools of themselves in public. Meanwhile, the less said about sad science club remnants, the better.
Character: Desidério Amanza
Background: N
Recap & Links: Desidério (and less esteemed company) made a dramatic entrance by rolling down a hill and landing in a rift, was recruited thanks to getting an anchor and having no other option, and generally made a nosy nuisance of himself about the company. Did not get an advance on his paycheck despite being very trustworthy and useful, which is annoying!
—But also I'm not writing a full app for him this month and I know I owe y'all one, so please kick him to the curb for the time being. I intend to formally app in February, and will probably say he went off to do some scouting thing in the interim oops.
no subject
Character: Mobius
Background: N
(given he was made head archivist technically at the beginning of holidecember, I don't feel it prudent to do the leadership stuff for this AC, but will start using it for the next AC /jazzhands)
Recap & Links: bruh was big sad and trying to keep it to himself about Jude leaving (which led to some Wysteria-based drama and a conversation with Abby about maybe keeping some of this stuff off certain crystal posts mm thanks!), welcomed some new people and got an anchor shard for his troubles, and has been around the desert to the point of helping spearhead efforts to unfuck nightmares
no subject
Character: Jayce Talis
Background: N
Recap & Links: Prickly relations between Jayce and Viktor with Abby unintentionally caught in the crossfire continued through the lyrium study until common ground was more or less stumbled upon. Sought Gela to commission a bespoke coat for Viktor. Lightly participated in Bastien's question game on the crystals and broke bread with Riftwatch's hottest new recruit (literally), then joined a nigh-company-wide mission back to the Silent Plains where he liaised with the People again, participated in Thedosian Grand Theft Auto with Xiomara and Desidério, beat up a tree for snacks with Clarisse as a distraction from the nightmares, shared the fire with Gela after witnessing an Awkward Encounter, sought one of several crystal chats with Viktor during the mission, tossed a date at another new recruit, and helped disarm the Venatori device responsible for pushing out all those pesky nightmares.
ammmy
Character: Julius
Leadership Proof: New boss runs a series of one-on-one meetings with varying success
Recap & Links:
After the Granitefell situation, Julius put his head down and had a quiet couple of months that included no inconvenient feelings, wrapping up Sashamiri as an independent project and otherwise keeping up with his Diplomacy duties. During Firstfall he traveled with the company to the Silent Plains. He spent most of Satinalia doing Diplomacy stuff, though he did find time to hang out with his boyfriend. Much less fun, he spearheaded the hunt for Giovenco, one of a few mages who became abominations and fled into the the desert. (He, Mobius and the rest of the party also found some suspicious ruins worth flagging for Riftwatch's leaders in that same thread.) Finally, with his official appointment as Seneschal, he started settling into his new duties (same post as leadership proof).
Character: Cosima Niehaus
Leadership Proof: Nothing like a division member suggesting dismemberment for your first month on the job
Recap & Links:
Cosima participated in a game via sending crystal and enjoyed Satinalia with some friends. Which was good, because it was otherwise a rough quarter. First Jude vanished, then Tony. The latter left her not only with grief, but work, first as his erstwhile assistant and then as the newly appointed head of the Research Division. She's still catching up (and processing), but continues to try to find time to help Strange at the infirmary.
Character: Vanya Orlov
Background: N
Recap & Links:
Chariot-racing is not Vanya's wheelhouse, but it went ... a way. Vanya also took the time to register his concerns about Wysteria's lyrium experiments, despite knowing he would probably give Flint a headache by doing so. He welcomed a new neighbor, helped said new neighbor with some griffon trouble during a propaganda mission, and introduced current colleagues to a former colleague who is now with the Exalted March.
no subject
Character: Viktor
Background: N
Recap & Links: This quarter, Viktor co-ran the lyrium trials, semi-reluctantly accepting co-workers as volunteer test subjects. His attempt to refuse Jayce as a subject ultimately flopped, caused some splash damage, and resulted in a falling-out with Wysteria.
Upon learning of Tony's departure, he offered professional support to replacement divhead Cosima, because repressing your feelings through work is of course the healthiest way to cope with emotional suffering. Similarly, while seeking to process his misgivings about Jayce's newfound resolve to study combat, he ended up using Barrow's trebuchet tutorial as an opportunity to suggest enhancing Gallows fortifications.
While the lyrium trials were temporarily suspended by an all-hands mission to the Silent Plains, Viktor stayed behind to furtively continue experimenting on himself until late in the month, soliciting uncharacteristic personal updates in the meantime. He arrived on site in time to help disable an exquisitely horrible machine and thus put an end to the nightmare plague.
Lana
Character: Lia
Month Joined: October
Have you replied to the taken list?: Y
Recap & Links: Cornelia "Lia" Fromme entered Riftwatch by way of accident, got intel from Wysteria, and immediately started flirting with Abby. She also had her dirty laundry aired via Crystal and briefly thought she had been gifted poison.
Character: Edgard
Background: N
Recap & Links: Edgard thought Barrow was mad at him, greeted Karlach when she entered, stole clothes for Flint , and mostly just annoyed Benedict.
no subject
Character: Abby A
Background: N
Recap & Links: Caused a minor ruckus on a public forum for no good reason (and bitched about it a lot), got flirted with, idiot, and had the most Last of Us conversation of all time with Ellie.
Character: Gela B
Leadership Proof: I didn't do one cuz she just got the job early December and that was a soup month 🙏 I am sorry
Recap & Links: Had a long overdue weep on the shoulder of a friend (after crying to get out of trebuchet lessons), found she has something in common with a new recruit, and was commissioned to make a beautiful (?) coat for Viktor.
no subject
Character: Benedict
Leadership Proof: talkin' shop with the new boss
Recap & Links: Was BULLIED, made a friend, secured? another, and admitted to a third while hating his life in the Silent Plains. Reconnected with Loki while being a hot mess, and discovered that not everything left behind is forgotten.
Character: Barrow
Leadership Proof: made Gela cry, found out Viktor is a weirdo
Recap & Links: Was menaced for friendship, fought another abomination, hung out with the boss.
Character: Fifi
Background: Y
Recap & Links: she's been struggling ok, all the divheads are shuffling around
no subject
Character: Strange
Leadership Proof: office hours harvestmere edition
Recap & Links: Doctor Stephen Strange announced his appointment to Head Healer and took his first meetings; plus solicited Ellie to paint a forest gnomes mural in the infirmary, and Edgard to draw some posters. (We’re certain he won’t regret this at all.) When Tony disappeared, Strange surprised himself by having some feelings about it. And then the universe had a cosmic sense of humour by delivering him an exhausted Loki as a patient right afterward. At the end of the year, he tagged along to the Silent Plains and accompanied the dream machine expedition.
Character: Astrid
Background: N, but joined in November
Recap & Links: Joined Riftwatch! Was starry-eyed at Karlach as they both hitched a ferry to the Gallows, and was then plunged into the deep end by losing sleep in the Silent Plains, but strove to make some new friends over Satinalia regardless.
no subject
Character: Petrana de Cedoux
Leadership Proof: cryptographing cryptographically in her office, prior to interruption
Recap & Links: I genuinely cannot believe how little I did and will be lighting a fire under my own ass for 2024. Having dealt (poorly) with the loss and then un-loss of Marcus Rowntree, Petrana had a small apology tour to conduct, but spent much of the last quarter engaged in her usual behind the scenes work. She met Karlach in Marcus's office, which was a lot less stressful than seeing Wysteria in her own to discuss amputation. She heads into the new year thinking seriously about her arm, and also Wysteria's arm.
Character: Gwenaëlle Baudin
Background: N
Recap & Links: Over the course of the past few months Gwenaëlle signed up for experiments and study, got out of Satinalia by doing extra work, tried to be kind, tried less hard to be less kind and reflected on a decade. She helped, gossiped, tried to get buff lesbians to carry her around and then thought better of it.
era
Character: Loki
Month Joined: November
Have you replied to the taken list?: Y
Recap & Links: Loki arrived and immediately fell asleep, stressed out some folks (including our own Dr. Strange), and reconnecting with others (like Alexandrie, Gwenaëlle, and Benedict). He also signed up for Research.
And then he went to the Silent Plains and was kinda helpful* re: the nightmare machine, but from a 'stopping nightmares from killing the other party members' as opposed to doing anything with the machine directly. Yanno.
*: one day I'll learn that 3+ character threads are not for me
no subject
Character: Byerly
Background: N
Recap & Links: Byerly quit his job! As a result, the past few months have been spent getting domestic with Bastien and occasionally making whimsical trouble. In general, he's footlose and fancy free.
Character: Nina
Background: N
Recap & Links: Nina has been keeping her head down, definitely because she's feeling lonely and for other in-character reasons and not because I haven't been threading much. She's been chatting idly with her acquaintances now and again and going on the occasional mission.
jasmin
Character: Alexandrie D’Asgard
Month Joined: November
Have you replied to the taken list?: N
Recap & Links:
Only recently in town again herself, Alexandrie has an unexpected but very welcomed visitor
no subject
Character: Clarisse
Background: N
Recap & Links: Clarisse talked to Strange about doing some first aid training, went on a mission with Vanya, jumped into this crystal post to defend Abby and piss Wysteria off, and talked to/did stuff with several people in the modplot.
mj
Character: Bastien
Background: N
Recap & Links: Bastien took advantage of Byerly resigning to move out of the Gallows and into Lowtown, where he'll be between 30 and 60 percent happier. He moved his printing press to Lowtown as well; he's still printing the Hangman's Papers, but now that it isn't on Riftwatch's property to potentially get them in trouble by association, he's gearing up to use it for other things too. In the Silent Plains he handled some outreach to Tevinter villages and bullied Benedict but also apologized. Meanwhile he continued on his personal missions to get people talking to each other and growing beards.
Character: Kostos Averesch
Month Joined: November
Have you replied to the taken list?: Y
Recap & Links: Kostos met up with Riftwatch in the Silent Plains while still working with the Rebel Mage Army, but he was reassigned (not discharged!!!) to Riftwatch with Nell and traveled back to Kirkwall with them. His first order of business was proposing possessed limbs.
Character: Xiomara Novoa
Background: N
Recap & Links: Xiomara considered applying to be Ambassador but decided not to. In the Silent Plains she helped search for the Dalish and tried to start a fight without much success.
Character: Redvers Keen
Background: Y
Recap & Links: Redvers went to the Silent Plains with Riftwatch, but he stayed with his Templar pals during anything resembling free time. Otherwise he's been doing his work and keeping his head down and seriously considering the merits of removing his arm so he can leave.
no subject
Character: Yseult
Leadership Proof: Post-Hiring Job Interview
Recap & Links: Half-heartedly returned to work post-Time Magic after
secretly attempting to quita few weeks' vacation, only to discover that two of her colleagues had gone ahead and escaped from DH responsibilities (RIP Tony). Did a fair bit of lying low in the Scouting suite with her not-dead husband and just keeping up with paperwork and trying to stop being exhausted by the idea of doing this job indefinitely. Made a new employee jump through some hoops (and did not give him an advance on his salary), kept an eye on the Gallows while people went to the desert, actually participated in a casual conversation (??), and accepted Flint's invitation to see a play (???).Character: Evelyn Farrier
Background?: Y
Recap: Helped with some exploring and hunting in the desert, hung out with friends and bear companion, continued to not make enough of an effort to settle into Riftwatch, and struggle with what she's meant to be doing as a book nerd surrounded by science nerds in Research.
Character: Nell Voss
Background?: Y
Recap: Rejoined Riftwatch and returned with them to the Gallows from the Silent Plains along with Kostos, because that's where everyone mutually and voluntarily agreed they would be most useful right now not at all because the mage leadership was sick of her trying to get everybody to abandon the Exalted March and go work for the Free Marches instead.
no subject
Character: John Silver
Leadership Proof: war table plot
Recap & Links: John discussed Satinalia gifts with Abby TheLastOfUs. Generally managing the internal fallout from being dead and then not dead. Went to the desert, didn't enjoy the experience.
Character: Derrica
Leadership Proof: Caught mid-promotion, will do some div head related content shortly.
Recap & Links: Tended to the wounded in both camps in the Silent Hills. Hung out with the Commander.
Character: Ellis
Background: N
Recap & Links: Continuing to handle having been dead and not dead poorly. Lost his best pal and and handled it poorly. Helped slay a dragon.
no subject
You can background Derrica and/or Ellis this time (just not John, since he was in a leadership role) as long as you have three links for at least one character. The links can include inbox threads as well as threads that were started before October, as long as they have tags in October-December.
If you do take strikes, all that means is you need to be extra sure to hit the three links per character next time—not a huge deal at all.
Let us know what you’d like to do! If you want to take a strike that’s cool. Otherwise we can delete this comment (and yours in response) so you can edit to add links.

brooklyn.
Character: Marcus
Leadership Proof: Interrogating Karlach
Recap & Links: Interrogated Karlach! Qunari deserters are less suspicious than Templars, you heard it here first. On the front, Marcus also assisted in transporting a scientist to his science friends while they dismantled the dream machine, and, arguably more important, helped make Satinalia happen by lifting heavy things.
Character: Loxley
Background: Y
Recap & Links: He went to the Silent Plains and kept his head down, working hard. Definitely due for shenanigans.
Character: Florent
Background: Y
Recap & Links: Did NOT go to the Silent Plains, tried writing a play about himself, is considering some new bold fashion choices.
no subject
Character: Ellie
Leadership Proof: Desi heard Ellie is the one who minds the griffons.
Recap & Links: Ellie started off strong by contributing a gnome mural, followed by telling Barrow her True Name. Lost a bit of momentum by telling Wysteria she was wrong in public, but then asked some... questions. She went on to have an only slightly terrible Satinalia, shoot a dragon with a really big gun, and have a good old fashioned cry about about nightmare.
