ACTIVITY CHECK: January–March 2024
ACTIVITY CHECK
This activity check is for JANUARY–MARCH 2024. The deadline to reply is APRIL 15. You can review prior AC posts here if needed.
To pass AC you should provide a brief recap of what your character has been up to with at least three RP links per character for the relevant time period. These links can be to posts you created, log threads, rookery/crystal threads, inbox threads, or open top-levels within plot posts. NEW REQUIREMENT: You must also link to reports for any war table assignment your character completed during this period. You can do this in the body of your AC comment by sticking "(report)" after your mention of the mission. If you haven't put up a report yet, now is the time to do it.
You can use multiple threads from within the same post, such as three different logs branching from the same open prompt. You can use threads that started prior to the beginning of AC period as long as a substantial portion of tags occurred during this AC period and you haven't previously used that thread as proof. There is no minimum tag count per thread. (But if you're consistently providing primarily threads you dropped after a couple of tags, last-minute open posts you don't tag after checking the AC box, etc., we may contact you about that.)
RECAPS
Along with your links, you're providing a quick recap of what your character has been up to. The goal for this is to help everyone keep track of what's been happening, both with their own characters and with everyone else's. Riftwatch is a small enough organization that people are probably going to be aware of what everyone else is working on and any major/obvious interpersonal drama, so this is our OOC cheat sheet!
Recaps can be very brief. E.g., "Over the last three months, Paul went to Tevinter to assassinate a magister (report), had a fight with his best friend Joe, and learned how to use a crossbow." But you're also welcome to include more detail if you want, as long as you keep it to a couple of paragraphs max.
You can—as always—handwave interpersonal interactions with other characters and note those in your recap if you want a record of them. "Paul has continued to avoid Joe since their fight" with no thread showcasing the avoidance, for example. You could also handwave the whole fight! We don't care.
For work- and plot-related recap claims, however, you can only handwave your character's daily performance of their routine work. In between the more significant things you thread, we assume all characters are doing the Typical Work listed on their division wiki page. So you could say "Paul has been diligent about his work for the diplomacy division and met with a few minor nobles visiting Kirkwall to talk up Riftwatch," or "Paul has been distracted and struggling with his work for the forces division and stumbled through his routine patrols," etc., without proving that in a thread. No one has to RP paperwork or its equivalent.
What you can't purely handwave is anything significant or cool enough that other people would need to remember that it actually happened for future plot purposes—we'd define this as anything for which we normally require a plot request or a report, which we've previously provided some guidance on where those lines are here—or anything that's a significant achievement for your character rather than just daily grind stuff. Basically: if you want your character to do anything cooler than competently attending to their routine work, you've gotta RP about it somehow. That can mean RPing the actual event, or it can mean RPing discussion or planning or fallout around the event–but you have to RP something about it!
SPECIFIC CHARACTER SITUATIONS
NEW CHARACTERS: Characters who were apped during this AC period need to provide one link for each full month they were in the game. For example, for the AC period of January through March, a character apped in January would need two proofs because they were in the game for the full months of February and March (but it doesn't matter which month the two links were started in), a character apped in February would need one, and a character apped in March wouldn't need any links. Obviously you're welcome to include as many links as you have/want.
IC LEADERS: You're required to provide proof of your character using their job in some way. This can be a war table assignment or player plot, if you chose to run one. But it can also just mean making sure that one of your AC proof links includes your character performing their job duties. E.g., the Head Archivist could link to a crystal announcement asking people to please stop dog-earing the books, a log in which they're reorganizing the library, or an inbox thread where they hound a specific person to stop hoarding library books in their bedroom.
BACKGROUND CHARACTERS: Everyone has to provide the required three links for at least one character every AC period. If you play multiple characters, then each period you can choose up to two to mark as background characters. You can rotate which characters you designate as background each AC period if you want, though characters with leadership roles of any kind cannot be backgrounded. You still need to provide a brief, vague-as-you'd-like recap of what they're doing in the background, so everyone else knows whether they're in the Gallows doing their work in the background or on an assignment abroad or whatever else, but you don't have to provide any links.
STRIKES
Failing to respond to AC at all will result in the character being swept.
If you fail to post any links at all for a character who isn't backgrounded, you'll have to drop them. If you post more than zero but fewer than three, you'll get a strike but can try again next quarter. If you fail to meet the three-link-per-character requirement for two quarters in a row you'll be required to drop as many characters as you failed with. (If you have multiple characters, which character[s] you drop will be up to you; it doesn't necessarily have to be the one you failed with.) This does technically mean that you could drag your feet for up to six months before dropping a character you've only written a single tag for in that time. We ask that you be kind to your CR and not do that. Again, if you seem to be abusing the system, we'll contact you to talk about it.

Despite his best efforts to avoid work, Lazar dispersed bandits with Astrid, surveilled Ander merchants, explored the Crossroads, bodyguarded with Barrow, and mingled with pirates (report). He also hassled Viktor about some leads. He was shot in the ass by one bard and helped grab Bastien from some others (report). Along the way, he conducted vital experiments in weapons and poison testing, and proposed some crucial Gallows upgrades. When Envy demons were uncovered in the Gallows, he tried and failed to take a nap about it, eventually assisting in a rescue.
His free time has been spent fucking around, as is the Maker's will.

Cedric arrived from the warfront, and interviewed for a job with an imposter, in which he slightly exaggerated his qualifications. His first tasks: Retrieve and replace a haunted doll with Vega, unload some carts with Gannicus, and aid the Viscount's cousin in his opera debut. He made re/introductions to some local Templars, and helped kill the Envy demon impersonating one of them. He only threw up once. Then he volunteered for some guard duty, and checked on friends.
In his free time, he's trying and failing to learn Orlesian.

"Character: Petrana de Cedoux
Leadership Proof: In Orlais, Julius and Petrana persuade a nobleman to go with his (mage) child to the Inquisition. Petrana provides him with proprietary codes that the Inquisition hasn't been appraised of to keep in touch with them (and discreetly, if need be).
Recap & Links: Wysteria proposed that Petrana's situation is most urgent for removing her anchor-shard, which she didn't necessarily agree with in the particulars but has been discussing with Marcus and Julius and will likely make a firm decision on in the near future. With both hands still attached she went to Orlais (report), a generally successful outing that was followed up by Julius getting poisoned when they got home. She saw off Wysteria, both of them pleasantly anticipating that Kirkwall would not get bombed to shit imminently, and was cleared of being a demon by Kostos, continuing their streak of having remarkably civil conversations (for Kostos).
Character: Gwenaëlle Baudin

Recap & Links: When Cosima took over the Research division, she offered to report directly on some previously classified-to-just-Tony reports, finally having a conversation with her longer than thirty seconds after eight years. She had a normal time in the Crossroads that didn't lead to becoming a demon, and pitched Loxley for sky captain. In Orlais (see report linked above) she made some spy friends among the elves and accidentally started a rumour that previous reports of her "tall, Research division, rifter" husband being an elf were obviously exaggerated. Lazar convinced her to shoot an apple off his head, and she showed her sick bow to Astrid, to whom it is culturally relevant. She got very involved in the demon stuff, opening her home to Gela before going after demon Gela.
An eventful quarter for both of 'em, apologies if any of those links lead to the wrong threads.

Leadership Proof: When you thought it was an official meeting but it was actually a demon trying to poison you

This quarter, Julius considered the pros and cons of one of his partners voluntarily giving up a limb; went to Halamshiral where he charmed a few people, collected some gossip and helped a worried father decide what to do about his magical daughter (report); raised the demon alarm after the aforementioned poisoning and heroically rested instead of volunteering for the subsequent demon hunt; and said goodbye to Wysteria for the present.

Cosima settled into her new position as Research Div Head this month, reaching out to members of her division (same link as leadership proof) to understand their projects and priorities, as well as accepting Loki's volunteered servies as an assitant. She was promptly asked to weigh in on a serious political problem and faced with two alarming revelations about members of the company that people would really like Research to solve, please. In Tav's case, at least, a consultation with Stephen Strange suggested a potential avenue to explore; Gela, unforunately, turned out to be a demon for a lot of the last quarter which sort of put a dent in helping with her problems. It's really just a to-do list with a lot of things fighting to be listed first, at this point.

Vanya has had a bumpy start to the year. With the help fo a few Forces members, he rescued his ex's sister and her family from Tevinter-occupied Hasmal (report). Then he went to Tevinter to help assassinate a magister and got controlled by a blood mage for his trouble (report). And because he hadn't been having a bad enough time, he got captured by a demon in the Crossroads. He did eventually manage to get himself and Gela back to the Gallows; while the demons had already been discovered, he and Gela were able to share the location of the other abducted Riftwatch agents and was able to chop the demon's head off in a cool yet disturbing way before collapsing. He has since begun to recuperate.

Recap & Links: Over the last few months Bastien did a lot of traveling: he assisted with the exploration and reorganization of the Crossroads, went to Estwatch (report) to help make inroads with the pirates there, and helped spearhead Riftwatch's visit to Halamshiral (report). In Halamshiral he was notably kidnapped and rescued by Lazar, Barrow, Byerly, and his old business partner. He also escorted a Chantry Mother to the borderlands of Tantervale with Gwenaëlle, and dealt with a troublesome duelist outside Ostwick with Byerly. (Secretly, he and Byerly took a detour into Kaiten where he reunited with some of his siblings.) During the Demon Incident his primary contribution was helping with the rescue of Benedict and Edgard.
When he was in Kirkwall, he gave an interview when Riftwatch was visited by a pack of feral dramatists, spent some time guarding Tav, and welcomed a poor Tevinter urchin into his and Byerly's home. Privately (but not really secretly) he's been printing a Lowtown-focused broadsheet called The Quarry for his local pals.

Recap & Links: Kostos gave an interview and a new hire orientation for Gannicus but otherwise was out of the Gallows most of the winter. At some point he also assisted Yseult, Loxley, and Vanya with an assassination (report) in Vyrantium. Then he went to Antiva for various reasons and was gone for a long time. He missed most of the envy demon drama, but on his return to the Gallows he did his due diligence and confirmed the fortress was infestation-free.

Recap & Links: Xiomara generously granted the visiting dramatists an interview with a real Lord of Fortune. They're welcome. She also raised the important issue of Riftwatch's criminal lack of cool nicknames—they're welcome, too. She and Astrid located a ship (report) for Research's ship purposes, which probably means she should be sky captain instead of Loxley.

Recap & Links: Redvers also gave an interview, for better or worse, and turned fetching jellied pigs feet for a donor into an opportunity to bully Barrow. During the demon incident, he set up a Templar huddle for which he was subsequently unjustly punished. (Not counting the last one as an RP link, just want it here for posterity.)

Leadership Proof: summoned to quickly administer to the poisoned seneschal
Recap & Links: Oh god where to even begin. He’s deeply interested in the eluvians, so was present to assist in their relocation in the Crossroads, where a nosy spirit made Stephen & Gwenaëlle finally act on their impulses, although it took them another couple months after that to wind up in bed together and then decide they’d like to attempt a relationship properly. On behalf of Research, he schmoozed Orlesian academics in Halamshiral (report), most notably Lady Clothilde, a cousin of the Dean of Lydes who turned out to be interested in the doctor’s work for the wrong reasons.
He tasked Tav with looking after the Riftwatch garden, and started making plans with Cosima on how to deal with the whole Dark Urge thing. Tended to Viktor’s collapse, and checked in with all the templars about their lyrium regimens, completely oblivious that the last one he spoke to was A Fucking Demon.
Got very involved in the subsequent demon infiltration, running back and forth all over the Gallows tending to a poisoned Julius, activated two-factor authentication with Gwenaëlle, before taking a breather to brainstorm with Yseult & Lazar about when the demon switcheroo happened, then checked up on the Real Gela & Vanya when they showed up. Has been looking after the injured in the infirmary since then.
He would have taken a weeklong nap after that, but then the Gallows blew up.

Recap & Links: Over the past few months, Byerly has been settling into domestic life with Bastien and too many dogs. A few ripples in tranquility have come - most notably in the form of Byerly's former assistant whom he DEFINITELY doesn't care about being replaced by an envy demon. He definitely didn't make any reckless decisions out of grief. The resolution of this crisis has let Byerly settle back into being a shithead as usual - thank god nothing's going to explode and end up causing chaos!

When Envy demons infiltrated company ranks, he had some suspicions; after offering his help, he and Jayce confronted one of the impostors until backup arrived.

After that Ellie returned to the schoolyard before she pointed out some weird shit and touched base with Yseult before killing something that wasn't Gela. Somehow she found time to finally sort out a misunderstanding that's lasted like two years before things went to shit in Minrathous.
