ACTIVITY CHECK: July–September 2024
ACTIVITY CHECK
This activity check is for JULY–SEPTEMBER 2024. The deadline to reply is OCTOBER 15. You can review prior AC posts here if needed.
To pass AC you should provide a brief recap of what your character has been up to with at least three RP links per character for the relevant time period. These links can be to posts you created, log threads, rookery/crystal threads, inbox threads, or open top-levels within plot posts. You must also link to reports for any war table assignment your character completed during this period. You can do this in the body of your AC comment by sticking "(report)" after your mention of the mission. If you haven't put up a report yet, now is the time to do it.
You can use multiple threads from within the same post, such as three different logs branching from the same open prompt. You can use threads that started prior to the beginning of AC period as long as a substantial portion of tags occurred during this AC period and you didn't already use that thread as proof for a previous AC period. There is no minimum tag count per thread. (But if you're consistently providing only threads you dropped after a couple of tags, last-minute open posts you don't tag after making AC, etc., we may contact you about that.)
RECAPS
Along with your links, you're providing a quick recap of what your character has been up to. The goal for this is to help everyone keep track of what's been happening, both with their own characters and with everyone else's. Riftwatch is a small enough organization that people are probably going to be aware of what everyone else is working on and any obvious interpersonal drama, so this is our OOC cheat sheet!
Recaps can be very brief. E.g., "Over the last three months, Paul went to Tevinter to assassinate a magister (report), had a fight with his best friend Joe, and learned how to use a crossbow." But you're also welcome to include more detail if you want, as long as you keep it to a couple of paragraphs max.
You can—as always—handwave interpersonal interactions with other characters and note those in your recap if you want a record of them. "Paul has continued to avoid Joe since their fight" with no thread showcasing the avoidance, for example. You could also handwave the whole fight! We don't care.
For work- and plot-related recap claims, however, you can only handwave your character's daily performance of their routine work. In between the more significant things you thread, we assume all characters are doing the Typical Work listed on their division wiki page. So you could say "Paul has been diligent about his work for the Diplomacy Division and met with a few minor nobles visiting Kirkwall to talk up Riftwatch," or "Paul has been distracted and struggling with his work for the Forces Division and stumbled through his routine patrols," etc., without proving that in a thread. No one has to RP paperwork or its equivalent.
What you can't purely handwave is anything significant or cool enough that other people would need to remember that it actually happened for future plot purposes—we'd define this as anything for which we normally require a plot request or a report, which we've previously provided some guidance on where those lines are here—or anything that's a significant achievement for your character rather than just daily grind stuff. Basically: if you want your character to do anything cooler than competently attending to their routine work, you've gotta RP about it somehow. That can mean RPing the actual event, or it can mean RPing discussion or planning or fallout around the event–but you have to RP something about it!
SPECIFIC CHARACTER SITUATIONS
NEW CHARACTERS: Characters who were apped during this AC period need to provide one link for each full month they were in the game. For example, for the AC period of January through March, a character apped in January would need two proofs because they were in the game for the full months of February and March (but it doesn't matter which month the two links were started in), a character apped in February would need one, and a character apped in March wouldn't need any links. Obviously you're welcome to include as many links as you have/want.
IC LEADERS: You're required to provide proof of your character using their job in some way. This can be a war table assignment or player plot, if you chose to run one. But it can also just mean making sure that one of your AC proof links includes your character performing their job duties. E.g., the Head Archivist could link to a crystal announcement asking people to please stop dog-earing the books, a log in which they're reorganizing the library, or an inbox thread where they hound a specific person to stop hoarding library books in their bedroom. This requirement doesn't apply to characters who are new to their jobs as of the current quarter.
BACKGROUND CHARACTERS: Everyone has to provide the required three links for at least one character every AC period. But if you play multiple characters, then each period you can choose up to two to mark as background characters. You can rotate which characters you designate as background each AC period if you want, though characters with leadership roles of any kind cannot be backgrounded. You still need to provide a brief, vague-as-you'd-like recap of what they're doing in the background, so everyone else knows whether they're in the Gallows doing their work or on an assignment abroad or whatever else, but you don't have to provide any links.
VOICE TEST CHARACTERS: You are not required to do AC for voice test characters until the deadline for them becoming real characters has passed, but you can fill out the form for them anyway if you want to have a record of what they've done for future reference.
STRIKES
Failing to respond to AC at all will result in the character being swept.
If you fail to post any links at all for a character who isn't backgrounded, you'll have to drop them. If you post more than zero but fewer than three, you'll get a strike but can try again next quarter. If you fail to meet the three-link-per-character requirement for two quarters in a row you'll be required to drop as many characters as you failed with. This does technically mean that you could drag your feet for up to six months before dropping a character you've only written a single tag for in that time. We ask that you be kind to your CR and not do that. Again, if you seem to be abusing the system, we'll contact you to talk about it.

Tav spent a portion of July on a camping trip with Stephen Strange. He helped Gela in the garden and offered a suggestion to Ness vis a vis sigil circles from home.
He made a new friend in Vlast after being told he was a great conversation partner by Isaac.
He was cured of the Dark Urge through the efforts of Cosima and Stephen Strange.
And then he said hello as a new boy, Urge destroyed. He also offers to travel to gather more seeds in this post.

Leadership Proof: Acquiring cushions in Val Royeux with Bastien and working on paper with Gela.
Recap & Links: In July, Ness arrived and had a bad time, and then made her introductions. She also got a crash course in extremism and didn't like it. Throughout the month, she had some magical growing pains, but come August, she didn't let them stop her from polling Rifters on their home technologies and subsequently filing a report. Mid-August, she got some magic lessons with Doctor Strange, and then headed through the eluvians for mod plot. In Val Royeaux, she and Stephen successfully wooed an elven biology adjunct to come work on penicillin in The Gallows, while in Minrathous she and Petrana did some recon. She also tattled on Isaac just a little, which resulted in her coming clean to the Division heads about her not-really-blood magic in September.

Character: Cosima Niehaus
Leadership Proof: She would not have guessed that being a Div head involves so much curing Riftwatch agents of alarming, potentially dangerous curses/ailments/etc.
Recap & Links:
Cosima tried to help the new Div head settle in as the org rebuilds. She also got called in to help with a breakthrough that had some collateral damage in Kirkwall proper and stepped in to reassure a new rifter who rubbed some the wrong way. The hits kept coming as she and Stephen teamed up to help cure Tav (see leadership proof), winning his gratitude. She was delighted that new arrivals just keep taking initiative, what a delight. Cosima's also practicing accepting help when she can, and doing her best to keep morale up.
Oh yeah, and she's still dealing with her ex-fiancée's return and it's going pretty good, all things considered.

Kicking off the quarter with the news that the pirates had, in fact, stolen their shit was not the most cheerful note; nor was having to put his hand up as opposing war crimes. Herian's return was more of a mixed bag re his reaction, though not letting her get conned by Lazar seemed the least he could do. He also got an unexpected call from a Templar that led him to help a new arrival with a magical problem. He genuinely likes Ness, which made it complicated when she admitted to being able to do telepathy, even if it's not actually blood magic in the sense of using blood. (It's fine, he'll cope.) Meanwhile, he, Marcus and Petrana are contemplating getting a place in town and he's trying to reestablish routines with his direct reports (see leadership proof).

Siegfried established a connection with the new Griffon Keeper, got yet another exotic animal query, and attempted renovations at the Blasted Hills hunting lodge.

Vanya congratulated Gwenaëlle on her new position and agreed to teach her Nevarran. He also, with gentle prodding, decided discretion was the better part of valor and abandoned his assigned room to move in with Cedric (and Mobius). During the mod plot, he provided escort services to Nevarra for both Strange and Ness which honestly, given how his year has been going, went totally fine. All the demons happened off-screen this time. At any rate, it went well enough for Ness to become his second language student.

Character: Gwenaëlle Baudin, captain of the guard
Leadership Proof: PROOF
Recap & Links: This period opened with an unexpectedly emotional bang as Gwenaëlle's captaincy announcement became a real rollercoaster (see above) featuring her amnesiac ex-husband and a lot of complicated feelings about battle-readiness. She made a new friend in a normal way (that's definitely what happened), addressed the 6'6" elephant in the room (and then for the benefit of the elephant), and made another new rifter friend. Thanks to Flint she's learning Nevarran, which has accidentally led to starting a Nevarran social club. One of her new rifter friends has some risky magic that she's keeping an eye on, and hoping not to be bitten the ass by. After deciding Stephen lives there and isn't just fancy homeless, she donated her excess wardrobe to various Riftwatchers in need. She collected her third new rifter, though not the last for the quarter, and hard launched her boyfriend with one of the dumbest arguments they could have had as their first couple fight. In Qarinus she engaged in some throat-slitting and maybe light arson, saving the wacky hijinx for Minrathous and some baby-stealing revelations for Nevarra City, where she later stashed her treasonous brother. She's very excited to make Satinalia worse.

Recap & Links: Starting the quarter with some scheming as a result of bad news about Flint, Petrana followed that up with some measured thoughts on Tranquility as well as diplomatic work, where despite being a rifter she had information only to volunteer on the Thedosian side of things. She did volunteer some rifter knowledge on the matter of the passage of time. Later she discussed defections with Isaac and performed some light espionage with Ness in Minrathous, which she agreed to report to the acting Viscount. With new arrivals all getting very proactive, Hermione contacted her regarding a project proposal that she's particularly interested in.

Leadership Proof: Making Riftwatch write down all of their embarrassing medical issues.
Recap & Links: The reconstruction of the tower residences meant Stephen having to make it official that he just lives on Gwenaëlle’s houseboat now, permanently, but he’s pleased with this outcome.
He’s been diving deep into intensive magic practice, entailing both learning from Julius and training with Ness, his new favourite protege. He had a couple other startling meetings with new rifter witches Hermione (who remembers him from another universe) and Wanda (itscomplicated.jpg).
Keeping busy around the eluvians; items of note include closing a particularly ugly rift with Cedric, wooing an Orlesian professor with Ness to develop penicillin, meeting his girlfriend’s grandfather for the first time, and being caught in some foliage gone very wrong with Viktor. He and Cosima also successfully helped cure Tav of his pesky murder urges, although the elf did most of the work.

Recap & Links: Moving in with her bestie Lazar also means scraping their two braincells together and trying to explain monogamy to a fuckboy. Later, she grew closer to new rifter Abella and they initially bonded over similar Scandinavian backgrounds before accidentally trauma-dumping and getting in their feelings about it.
Around the world, also keeping busy, she’s mostly been setting up camp in the Anderfels, checking on one of her loose-end Ambassadoria contacts in Minrathous, getting fined for public urination, and heisting a golem.

Recap & Links:
Caius has started out strong by picking little fights with angry strangers, nosy strangers, and that weird Andraste fucker. Some of his initial sass resulted in productive discussions of Riftwatch's capacity with Gwen, a conversation that continued in more specificity once the Eluvian network expanded. After sulkily learning about griffons and getting to know Benedict a little better, Caius started to reach out to fellow nerds Petrana and Viktor with more ideas for ways he can contribute. He also agreed to tutor Ness in Tevene culture in exchange for help with non-Tevene culture. Finally, begrudgingly, he volunteered to show Bastien rural Tevene mannerisms that he happens to be familiar with for no reason, don't worry about it.
Meanwhile, he and Cedric have been sharing some fucked up dreams. The end.

Leadership Proof: Voluntelling his old boss
Recap & Links:
Isaac hassled his colleagues, sometimes with ideas for procedures and equipment. For Special Acquisitions, he tried to hustle people to acquire new, and catalogue existing artifacts. He also coordinated two very important side projects. He then shuffled himself out of one room and into another. Somehow, he still found the time to freak out and snitch.
Over in mageland, he got mad at pirates, checked up on an old friend, and considered recruiting another. It was a bad idea. Not everyone enjoyed his opinions, some preferring his teapot.
At other points during the eluvian missions, he chatted about Orlais, observed Tevene anchors, and helped move dissidents / discuss Granitefell. For his work with the Infirmary, he reviewed patient files, and provided some checkups, while also looking into rifter health threats.
In his free time, he's continuing to dig at Cedric Marquette, praying that Benevenuta can't hear him, and missing his baby.

Leadership Proof: Son of complaint box

In diplo commune, Cedric took a turn on-call, advocated for ignoring yelling, then got tilted himself. It led to discussions, and also some other stuff. Including a new job. For Kirkwall outreach, he helped clear spiders, and uncover secret passages.
On the Templar end of things, he helped handle some magic, and wrote the Order RE stolen Circle goods. He also, maybe, admitted to some war crimes in the Silent Plains. Where he returned to mediate. At home, navigated some political disagreements, and asked for advice. He's wary of veil disruptions spreading to Kirkwall.
In Nevarra City, he fought to help close the Necropolis rift, then went back to the Alienage to search for family records. He found a different kind. Some big feelings led to going off combat duty for a few weeks.
In his free time, he's talking Nevarran, having weird dreams, and asking questions. It's fine!!!!!

Looking to score some extra cash, Lazar took on work for other Riftwatch members. He also nobly tested local inventions, recommended improvements, volunteered his linguistic skill, checked on supplies, plannned strategy, and assessed personnel.
Despite all that hard work, he still "did his actual job" in Qarinus and the Anderfels. He wasn't thrilled about the latter. In the Thaig, he investigated a door, and stopped graverobbing long enough to check on his former roommate. He's talking marriage with the current one. Also, he stole horses.
In his free time, he was proud of his friends, and his tiny wife. He's going to pay her back for all the theft, maybe, unless he gets distracted.

Recap & Links: This past quarter, Byerly finally introduced Benedict and Bastien to his sister! This came after many, many years of dithering and worrying that his sister would secretly hate her for leaving her alone with their shitty family. But actually, she’s lovely, her kids are lovely, everyone is super kind and lovely. It’s good shit. Less lovely, though? Benedict’s mom, who’s a real goddamn piece of work. And in the meantime, of course, he’s been fuckin around on the network, occasionally being useful.

Recap & Links: After several month of research and apprenticeship under a city dwarf, Jayce and Viktor produced their first functional enchanted item with a boom. (See associated report.) He responded to the generalized inquiry from the new Captain of the Watch and asked Clarisse to teach him the basics of wielding a spear in combat. What started as a casual conversation with Cedric ended elsewise, and his intention to help Ennaris craft her own necklace ended awkwardly.
He took part in the ongoing eluvian and safehouses project, reviving the forge in an abandoned dwarven outpost with Bastien and Viktor, foraging mushrooms with a reluctant Benedict, tidying up the hunting lodge with Fifi, and clobbering darkspawn with Lazar. He and Astrid chatted about deities in the lake near the hunting lodge, and he and Viktor surveyed one of the dwarven homes for use. All future Research-related explosions can be anticipated to occur in relative isolation instead of a densely populated city. 🤓

Recap & Links: Hermione landed in Thedas and immediately proceeded to make amazing friends. She proceeded to have a great induction, finding a familiar face in the crowd and managing to freak out the unfreak-out-able.
Out of quarantine and with the new world being her oyster, she joined Forces, which was generally viewed as a good, positive decision. She cleared spiders out of a dwarven outpost with Captain Baudain, nearly got unalived by a spirit right in front of Cedric's salad, and did a subterfuge or two.
Being a busybody, she has bothered Provost Niehaus with a project idea - but don't mind her, she's not regretting the whole Forces thing.
In summary, she's kept busy. It helps to forget the existential crisis of being stuck here for life, and worse - that not all her spells are working properly (report).

Elsewhere in Thedas he blackmailed a Magister with Vega (report), spent some time in Val Royeaux with Ness and Gwenaëlle, met Byerly's sister and ran into Benedict's mother, and observed Jayce and Viktor in their natural habitat (a forge). Back in the Gallows he printed the Hangman's Papers and accused Fifi of deepest treachery.
