a call for assistance
Hello, Fade Rift. My name is Ophelia and I'm your new Cullen. If you want to just chat and plan new stuff, that is awesome and I am excited and I have an intro comment for it right here! In the mean time, this is a call for old CR to come give me a hand.
THIS POST IS CLOSED, AND I AM NO LONGER ACCEPTING OLD CR FOR CULLEN.
Due to the nature of his character, and the level of involvement he has with those who come to the Inquisition, adding past CR continually as it is brought to me is not a viable way of playing Cullen.
As such, from here on in, anyone who has not already commented on this post with their past CR will be treated as brand new CR. I apologize if this creates an inconvenience for anyone, but I made this post available for what I feel was an ample amount of time.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
So, there is obviously a bit of inherent difficulty in playing a character that has been previously played by someone else. Especially in a setting like Fade Rift where that character did not go home or leave for any length of time, and where they are not coming in as an alternate version of themselves. I'm going to ask for some help in that arena, especially since it looks like the previous Cullen was in the game since the very beginning. There must be a lot that he's already done.
Here's how you guys can help me! (And thank you so much in advance for the assist.)
If your character had any important interaction with Cullen, something that you feel helps to define their relationship, or even just something fun that you want to keep as past CR, please drop me a link to the log. That way, I can read up on what Cullen has already been up to, figure out a way to incorporate it in my own playing of him if at all possible, and have a firm grip on where he's at. This way I weed out all the interactions with characters who have dropped, or interactions that don't matter much to you guys. Anything that isn't brought to me, I'm going to assume you're fine with having it ret-conned out of his history. This will be far easier for Cullen from an IC standpoint than suddenly losing a bunch of his memories, since we all know that's been a huge looming fear of his. The fact that it won't be lyrium doing it will be a small comfort, but not much. A gaping hole in your mind is still a gaping hole in your mind.
While this is mostly a call for logs of one-on-one CR, if there was any big event that Cullen was part of that you think I should know about, please share it. You guys have been here longer than I have, and you know what's already gone down. That's the help I'm after.
I'm going to ask that you guys get these links to me within the next two weeks. This way, I can dive right in a.s.a.p. and get to playing with all the fun stuff available here. I feel like two weeks is enough time for anyone who wants to to have a chance to get things to me, enough time for me to read it all, and not so much time that I will lose my whole first month in the game to it. If you know of anyone who is on hiatus and has had significant interactions with Cullen, please give them a heads up. You can also just tell me who they are and I will PM them to make sure they know what's going on.
So, yeah, that's how you guys could really help me out. Get me your important Cullen logs by the 23rd of June so I can get to playing this fluffy little lion man with a concrete idea of his game history. Also, while I'm totally available for chatting and planning things on plurk or AIM or wherever, please contain logs for me to read to this post only. This way they are all in one place. I am going to literally be using this post as a checklist. It's just so much easier for me.

So the only time Cassandra and Cullen have had any real interaction, I think, was during what's known as the "Civil War" event. To explain as briefly as possible: after a native Dalish with a shard (Sina) accidentally opened a rift within Skyhold, Cassandra freaked out a bit and started interrogating all the rifters/shardbearers to figure out just who had the ability to open rifts and who might decide to do so for their own nefarious purposes. The only rifter who ended up looking like a threat was Galadriel. Cassandra interrogated her and imprisoned her, then immediately went to the advisors to tell them what happened. The "Civil War" part comes in here, with a difference of opinion between (primarily) Leliana and Cassandra; Cassandra concerned and frightened about what the rifters might do/be capable of and just where their loyalties lie, and Leliana passionate about freedom and concerned about the implications of locking up an elven mage rifter (three marginalized groups in one) on mere suspicion of malicious intent. Cullen and Josephine were less involved, but Cullen did back up Cassandra's point of view and Josephine backed up Leliana.
After some public outcry and a letter from the Dalish, Cassandra eventually realized that keeping Galadriel locked up indefinitely wasn't an option. When Thranduil showed up and promised to take responsibility for anything Galadriel might do against the Inquisition in the future, Cassandra agreed to release her. She has her freedom but is shadowed by Templar guards wherever she goes.
Cullen wasn't hugely involved with most of this - most of it's in the advisor discussion post linked above. He did overhear Samwise Gamgee talking about Galadriel's mind control powers and went to warn the advisors about them in their final (dropped) discussion log about Galadriel before Cassandra met with Thranduil.
Seeing as nothing was ever done with Cullen's knowledge of Galadriel's mind control powers, it might be easiest to retcon it, but if you'd like to keep it I'm perfectly happy to work with you on that - it's up to you!
I'm assuming the mods already talked to you about advisor duties/the inbox - the advisor inbox and reports post are both located here. Definitely subscribe to both posts if you haven't, and it might be a good idea to read over old reports/messages just to get an idea of some of the things the advisors have signed off on or had to deal with.
Cullen and Cassandra's personal relationship was never really explored, but I'd like them to be close and am really looking forward to playing out more of their interactions! Please hit me up if you wanna work out any headcanon about their existing relationship or if you have questions about the Inquisition's structure and history in Fade Rift, the CW event, stuff from the advisor inbox or anything else.

Man, shit got real. You people are going to have Cullen full grey before he's 40, poor noodle. It all looks like stuff that should be kept, because it involves so many people. I'm not sure why nothing was every done with the information that Galadriel can mind-whammy people. Was it an IC decision to sit on the information? I can't really see a reason to get rid of those logs. If the Advisors want to talk more about it IC, maybe we can do that.
We could probably do some planning in the current CR meme and figure out what we want to do with Cullen and Cassandra in the future. I'm trying to avoid getting too much stuff from the in game timeframe handwaved, since I'm already making the attempt to absorb all the stuff that happened that wasn't handwaved. There's stuff from before Fade Rift started that might be worth exploring, though.

I think the only reason things never progressed with the Galadriel-can-mind-control-us-all thing was that the previous Cullen player got busy and it kind of fell by the wayside. I suggested retconning his knowledge of it just because it's been a while and nothing was done with it, but maybe we can assume Cullen did tell the advisors and they decided to keep a lid on it (rather than him sitting on the information for months)?
Dorian also overheard Sam opening his big fat mouth on the crystals and contacted the advisors about it - I believe that was in response to Sam alluding to Galadriel having time control magic, not the mind control thing, but if Brooklyn is interested, maybe Dorian could be in on the advisor discussions/he can report in on what he's learned/whatever, if we want to do that.
Cassandra also made a phylactery of Galadriel (or had one made) before allowing her out of her cell, so between that and her constant templar guards she's being watched pretty much as well as she can be without it impeding on Bubbles actually being able to play her.
I can hit you up on the CR meme - I don't want to handwave too much either but they definitely have a preexisting relationship.

Canon gives us a pretty good idea of what things were like between them before Inquisition starts, so that's all good. We also get a good explanation of the lyrium withdrawal conversation, so that's worth keeping. Other people know about it, so I think that one needs to be handwaved. He definitely wouldn't be going around telling random people he barely knew if Cassandra didn't already know and hadn't already reassured him that she would shoulder that responsibility.
