player plot sign ups: the stars go waltzing

WHO: Adelaide, Araceli, Merrill, Ruby, Martel & OPEN.
HOW MANY: Team One will be 5-8 (including Araceli, Martel & Ruby), Team Two will be 8 (including Merrill & Adelaide.)
WHERE: A small town in Orlais, and a compound on the Orlais/Nevarra border.
WHEN: September 10th (pre-modplot.)

This here is a sign up post for a plot being run in September. I will say this straight up: this plot has horror elements and touches on themes of experimentation, torture, and potentially death (not of any current characters, unless you count ill-fated npcs). If you are down with that, proceed to step 2.


SUMMARY:
The most basic bones of the plot (I'm going to try not to give too much away to those involved in advance) are as follows:
— The Inquisition receives word of two rifts near a village in Orlais that are causing problems, and the Inquisition sends a team (including Araceli & Ruby + three to five others) to go sort it out.
— The first rift is closed. During their efforts to close the second rift, the team is attacked and kidnapped by a group of Venatori.

The Venatori want to learn more about rifters, shards, and their potential. I'll include a bit more on just what they're doing below, so you can make an informed decision on whether to sign up or not.

— A couple of days later the Inquisition receives word that the second rift is still active, and that the original party sent has disappeared. A second party is second to close the second rift and investigate/retrieve the missing team if they can.

The timeline of this plot will be gently timeywimey for the preamble, with posts going up on the 10th September. This is when, ICly, the rescuing team will be arriving at the Venatori stronghold to rescue the original team. (Once characters are selected there will be a discussion post to establish some details, a chance to review proposed subthreads, and decide if there are any parts that people would like to handwave for the sake of diving into the thick of things, or if they would prefer to play things out.)


THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
— Team One will be experimented on with (regular!) lyrium. The degree of the experimentation your character undergoes and extent of its side effects are up to you, however this means that while signing up for the people who end up captures is open to ALL NATIVE SHARDBEARERS and RIFTERS, there will be limits set on how much exposure any NON-MAGE NATIVES receive, in order that they not be permanently damaged. By mod decree, rifters (regardless of their skillsets) recover from lyrium in the same way mages can, where non-mages native characters can suffer permanent effects.

— Characters will be fed and injected with lyrium; this can be threaded, if you like, but will be at least partly handwaved just because it will span a few days.
These effects will be short term, rather than permanent, although characters will doubtless require some recovery time. Some of the effects of lyrium according to the DA wiki are: "fatigue, forgetfulness, an unquenchable thirst, and cold hands... disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours."

— Rifters experience additional short-term effects, namely related to the reality muddling element of lyrium exposure. This can include very brief flashes of the memories of nearby characters, information about their canon point that is from beyond their point in the timeline, or beyond their own experience of their home world. These will be flashes (to avoid infomodding) rather than coherent scenes, and will be close to indistinguishable from a character's own memories without considerable thought and effort.

SO YOU'VE READ THE THING, and the thought appeals to you.
TEAM ONE NEEDS:
— 2-3 rifters or native shardbearers to be captured
— 0-2 natives without shards to be beaten up and left behind because they're useless.

TEAM TWO NEEDS:
— 6 rescuers (anyone qualifies!) to go and drag the original party back and destroy some Venatori.
