Open Player Plot: Mage Lyfe 101

SO something Anders has been working on, a lot, and talking about, a lot, is practical magic and the need for mages to learn a good assortment of spells that they can make a living with/survive with that aren't combat-based.

To this end, he's not just consulted with some mage PCs about practical magic, he's also setting up a conference. On the 24th, just outside of Skyhold, there will be some tents, chairs, and tables set up for anyone to come out and gather, and hopefully more mages than himself will be giving practical demonstrations of skills - magical and otherwise.

Everyone scheduled to teach he will reach out to privately beforehand, which is part of what this post is for.

On the morning of the 24th, once the tents and chairs and tables are set up, he'll make a public announcement and open the conference to literally everyone because he knows there's going to be scrutiny since it's him. He'll also offer the opportunity for anyone to teach practical skills, magical or otherwise, though the focus is on magic.

IF YOUR CHARACTER:
1) would be willing to teach, let me know in under this header here! We can thread or handwave him asking/talking about it with them if they're known to him, or we can just make sure he talks with them in his post otherwise.

2) wants to learn something in particular, comment under this header and maybe we can get someone who is willing to hop in/teach that.

Sam would like to learn more practical uses for magic, but he'd be willing to show others what he's learned. Or you know have the group experiment.

Anders will personally be offering to teach how to smooth out earth carefully for making level surfaces/cobblestones, combining heat and earth to reinforce a wall, and techniques to make sure a fire stays a stable temperature, which helps with any variety of things.

Other things are available on request, he likes to experiment with magic.

Velanna's kind of going to be toeing the line here because a lot of her practical magic is Dalish and she's not comfortable sharing those secrets with shems.

She could teach people how to use earth magic to hunt, that's kind of something she's made up over the years and not expressly Dalish. She just... won't show them how to teleport with roots she'll be like "work with entropy traps!" or something.

Using earth magic to hunt is seriously useful. He doesn't expect any of the Dalish to teach non-Dalish people how to use their special magic. He'll message her!

- Entropy spells such as Sleep/Coma and Paralyze for medical procedures
- Enchanting implements to help with tasks (cutting bread with a fire-enchanted knife for toast or cauterizing wounds that way, scooping something cold with ice-enchanted spoons, etc.) - not necessarily with runes, but with the Enchant Weapons spell
- Using magic that harnesses the power of stone like Earthquake to help with gardening/farming (removing stones, loosening soil, etc.)

Inessa has used ice magic to soothe pains when healing magic isn't available and for food storage, as well as using it to create walkways and such, so there's that? I know they haven't talked about this yet, but she'd offer to focus on her strongest point.

Also, since she's a Grey Warden, teaching people how to avoid darkspawn taint should they encounter any would seem a practical course of action.

Pel will teach how to sprout seeds and nuts (not the Keeper spec), the use of magic to fortify a building against the elements, and certain methods of making fertilizers and cold compresses.

Korrin will teach a variety of survival skills, both magical and otherwise and usually combining the two. Foraging, making traps for both food and people in pursuit, creating makeshift weapons (when walking around with a staff is really not a good idea), tips on limiting exposure in harsh environments/alleviating pain from said exposure, the use of magic in first aid for mages that aren't healers, and a list of 'don't do this or you'll die/regret it' things that doesn't fit in any of the above categories.

Since we've already got someone covering healing, North can volunteer to teach about nonviolent and practical uses of Arcane magic - in particular, the use of shields and barriers for more than just deflecting outright attacks.
