chantry relations project thangs

Hello hello,

I am wholesale ripping off MJ’s excellent ooc post idea and doing something much the same for the Chantry Relations Project. Herian has just stepped into the leadership role for the project, and I have an IC post planned but thought having some for pinning down ooc elements would be handy.
Chantry Relations Project page & sign up
Though still reeling from political crises and the loss of Divine Justinia, the Chantry remains the most powerful institution in Thedas, and its relationship with the Inquisition has always been ambiguous at best. It is imperative that the Inquisition work to clarify and improve that relationship lest the Chantry turn its considerable influence against the organization. Working with the Chantry is also the Inquisition's best hope of shaping the ultimate outcome of the Mage/Templar conflict and the future of both the Circles and the Templar Order.

First up.
Herian has some negative personal attitudes when it comes to certain people (notably the Dalish and Resolutionist Libertarians, among others).
Please know that ICly this will be managed by her sense of duty and the requirements of her role being more important than her personal feelings, and OOCly I’m also more than happy to figure things out, so please don’t hesitate to sign up even if you have concerns about your character and Herian’s ability to get along and their involvement in the project. My priority is making sure people feel comfortable and involved in this project even if ICly our characters like each other 0%.

What’s the plan?
Herian’s position on things is that the Chantry is powerful and important to people symbolically and emotionally, even with the controversies and losses it has experienced these past few years. In order to secure Thedas future, it is essential to secure Chantry approval and cooperation, and while that is in the works, stop the Chantry from bad mouthing the Inquisition at every opportunity.

There are also the matters of the Mage/Templar war, whether Circles have a future as part of mages lives in Thedas going forward, treatment of elves, and a slew of other social matters to consider, but her personal priority is to get the Chantry to stop hindering the Inquisition’s efforts to save the world. Obviously… this is going to require things going in stages.

In vague terms:
1. Find out ways to appeal to the Chantry and/or win allies within the Chantry.
2. Find out ways the Chantry has helped or harmed, leading to...
3. Focus on finding allies and funding that can lead the Chantry into helping more people than it hurts, perhaps collaborative aid efforts with Inquisition and Chantry involvement. She’s big on charity, kindness and the responsibility of those with power, so maybe trying to work on those parts of the Chantry and the Inquisition for the common ground.
4. Finding out who are really the Good Ones and bring more pro-Inquisition Chantry members into positions of power.
5. Advocate justice and accountability on all sides.

And basically small and large scale projects that will just make shit better on local and national and Thedas-wide levels. What this means more specifically is pretty open to influence from anyone in the project.

What next?
Addressing number one in her list, so: finding out more about who she’s working with, if there are particular methods that best suit their skills, types of people they respond to best, and what their personal priorities are. This can be threaded icly or discussed oocly, or both. Whatever. If you feel so inclined, filling in this form could be a great way to get the ball rolling.

OOCly that’ll just be handy for working out rapport, but ICly I think knowing what different characters priorities are and being able to figure out a sort of structure for how the Chantry Relations Project is moving forward would be really helpful.

Herian is all about honour and knightly nonsense, so her duty and responsibility in listening to the people in the project and making sure people are heard and their ideas considered are very important to her. I mean, she wants to do everything in the honourable and ethical way, but whatever.

Other stuff.
Herian can definitely come across as cold, aloof and emotionless. She isn't actually any of those things, but she does try to keep herself very tightly under control, so in terms of working with her she might sometimes seem... difficult. She's also very focused on things being done in upright and honourable ways through the correct avenues, but please don't feel limited in what approaches your character can actually take on projects and ideas! Like I said above, I will work with you ooc and as much as possible I want to help make ooc dreams come true. If you want more deet on your fearless leader, please checkout her info page.

If you could please fill in the form in the comments that would be super helpful, and feel free to hit me up with any questions! Let's make the Chantry Relations Project into a beautifully synchronised dream that makes aerobic competitions weep.

CHARACTER: Galatea Lourdes

FOCUS: Galatea is very interested in looking into the ways the Chantry has helped and harmed the populace; she has a private project she's working on devoted to locating the families of a specific group of mage children, not unrelated. She would also love to work to remove or, ideally, completely destroy any identifiable bad eggs. Please put a leash on her and manage her impulses appropriately.

ONGOING WORK: I just signed her up today >_>

LIKELY IMPRESSION: We should thread this, because fake Dalish tattoos.

HOPE & DREAMS: Galatea is my only character who really gives a shit about the Chantry, so I mainly want to get her involved with other people who also give a shit about the Chantry, in both positive and negative ways. Her hopes and dreams are to make the Chantry better by whatever means necessary.

IT'S OK she's not torturing or murdering anyone, she wants actual targets who warrant it and she's very stringent about what qualifies!! but. just. maybe make sure there are other options on the table, also, and that galatea stops planning to die in every mission????

yeah definitely let's reach for SOME OTHER OPTIONS FIRST, GALATEA ... hammer, nails, you know how it is. galatea is a walking talking advertisement for "maybe the chantry needs to be reined in", tbh, she is exactly what she was trained to be and arguably already doing better just by questioning orders and not immediately assuming she can kill whatever she's pointed at.

CHARACTER: Jehan Mercier

FOCUS: He is obviously a big fan of the Chantry, doesn't think it's perfect but certainly closer to it than not, and would like a strong leader (who supports the University of Orlais and isn't, like, totally draconian) and return to approximately the old order of things. He's also an academic and very curious, so his focus might wander into "ooh that's interesting" sometimes instead of what's strictly useful.

ONGOING WORK: He's done some chatting-up of Chantry officials, half info gathering and half trying to show them that the Inquisition is cool because he, a good Chantry boy, thinks it's cool. Also letters etc. He's in the diplomacy division and has reluctantly been spending more time doing that than EXPLORING COOL PLACES which is his true calling. He's uncovered a cult that thinks rifters are the Maker's third children and I have vague ideas about doing something with that someday when the rifters aren't all blue and weird.

LIKELY IMPRESSION: Jehan appreciates Herian from the Necropolis & pro-Chantry opinions. He might be too politely Orlesian to be her favorite but he does his best to temper himself to people's tastes for the most part.

HOPE & DREAMS: The aforementioned rifter cult plot, I'm really interested in old Andrastian cults in general but haven't found a way to make them matter. But like I enjoy the idea of more diplomacy and talking to leaders and so on, but in practice that's hard to RP, so doing more hands-on missions like "to impress so and so we must recover this lost artifact" instead of just talking over tea would be fun!!

Absolutely 100% agree about the twofers. Especially since stuff like that makes things less exclusive—not so much worrying about whether someone is socially acceptable to a Chantry Mother if we assume someone acceptable did the talking and now all these undesireables can still go explore the caves.

YES VALIDATION AND MUTUAL SHITTINESS.

YES CULTS.

CHARACTER: Wren Coupe

FOCUS:

  • Wren considers the Chantry an important institution for the stability of the South, and the Inquisition’s future. Foremost, she wants a Divine that will support their fight instead of crushing them like lil bugs.
  • Secondary to not being crushed like lil bugs, she's into Circle reform, and initiatives that help non-mage commoners. (Education, recruitment, etc)
  • For practical reasons she’s interested in non-humans entering the clergy, but also for practical reasons, doesn’t consider it a priority.
  • lmao theology who cares can we use it to make our case ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ONGOING WORK: Basically just running around yelling ’the forest totally isn’t blood magic’ for a while there, is probably doing very little actively right now given her new job. She’s got a specific ally in Orlais she’s funneling Inquisition info back to, andddd of course we’re going to the Anderfels soon.

LIKELY IMPRESSION: new project who dis

HOPE & DREAMS: OOC, I would love for people to butt heads over doing something the kinda-shady way VS the !!honour!! way at some point, like maybe it’s a choice on a mission and everyone’s gotta choose. But lbr, we can do that with just the two of them in literally any other interaction ever. So I'm easy. Also, I too am super into cults.

    CHARACTER: Malcolm Reed

FOCUS: His more personal concerns lie in the fact that while he's very devout, he gets that the Chantry itself is...less the organization it really ought to be. So while he can't fix the Chantry from the inside out, if he can help nudge the right people into the right places, that is the better option.

Also if we can please get them to like us before they up and throw some nasty Divine onto the throne without our opinion that'd be, like, super awesome.

ONGOING WORK: Has some fairly firm and loud opinions on the forest business, very much for letting Kirkwallers choose their own shit instead of letting blood mages/elves/the Inquisition decide what to do for them. (Money and help, but not deciding for them.) Has on occasion spoken to Revered Mothers and others in lesser positions to gauge reaction though not in some time (or like...even since going to Kirkwall I think?? my memory is very terrible).

    LIKELY IMPRESSION: /fingergunssssss
Though as far as her impression of him in this professionally, the fact that Seekers currently have an It's Complicated relationship with the Chantry (thanks, Lord Seeker) might be an issue...or his being a Seeker with loyalty to the late Divine might be a great boon. So. /handwaggle
    Can't hurt.

HOPE & DREAMS: I've gotten terrible Dairsmuid feels out of the way (spoilers he was Involved in that in ways that he hasn't really ever spoken about and is not common knowledge though a rumor), so really I'd love to focus on the idea of using possibly shadier ways to influence the Chantry, and also dealing with the negatives and instead of fixing them just Dealing With It or working around it because this shit ain't easy. There really hasn't been a...WHOLE lot that the Inquisition's been doing/has done/is doing right this second that would endear them to the Chantry as it is.

Mostly I just would love more stuff to actually do rather than just handwave some letter writing, and for there to be some Hard Moral Choices that people aren't going to agree on. (Like the forest! But like. On a grander scale than just 'I don't like these dumb elf trees' vs 'but I, an elf, would marry a tree'.)

obligatory caveats, apologies, etc for this bein real short

    CHARACTER: Myrobalan Shivana

FOCUS: Circle reform!! And mage rights/societal integration of mages insofar as that can be accomplished in the South in a way that does not get people killed or left in misery forever. Also beginning to lean toward the idea the Chantry itself needs some considerable reform, is for the entry of non-humans into the clergy, return of the Canticle of Shartan to the canon, has some weird ideas about theology, etc.

ONGOING WORK: Has been the Token Safe Mage on adventures into Hightown concerning the forest & has been chatting people up/trying to sway them on that. Otherwise been primarily busy with research though he is not above evangelizing at scoutmasters as needed.

    LIKELY IMPRESSION: buds

HOPE & DREAMS: ALSO ALL ABOUT CULTS & post his talk with Thranduil Myr has some theological Questions about rifters that need resolving (because he thinks that'll be useful to Inquisition outreach about them/potentially dealing with some of the CULTS! CULTS! CULTS!). Obviously very down for tangling on Circle reform/what mages are supposed to do in the world, possibly shake loose some surprising opinions, etc.

    CHARACTER: Nell Voss

FOCUS: The election of a new Divine, naturally with an eye primarily toward mage freedom issues. For the moment that generally aligns with the Inquisition obviously wanting candidates who support the organization.

ONGOING WORK: Investigating the prominent conservative and vocally anti-Inquisition Grand Cleric in Tantervale. Has Coupe's approval (probably, she wasn't hallucinating yet) to run a mission to discredit her.

LIKELY IMPRESSION: Disagrees with Herian about many things, including how to approach most problems, I expect, though they're doing alright about the guard duty thing. Always present for any meeting or other important conversation if at all possible. Stays quiet for the most part and prefers to listen, contributions are usually targeted. Is inclined to do her own thing without necessarily involving the rest of the project and doesn't feel the need for oversight.

HOPE & DREAMS: My dream/plan is to run a series of small to medium plots comprising missions run by Nell with the aim of influencing the election of the Divine in generally-shady ways. Think surveillance and blackmail and framing people and bribes and stealing donations to unfriendly candidates and gifting them to other more-friendly candidates and maybe at some point an assassination if necessary.

The issue is that this is stuff she's likely to do without telling anyone in the Chantry Relations project because at the moment she assumes they are all roughly of the same goody-two-shoes ilk as Herian and will just try to interfere. But OOCly seeing that other people here might be interested, maybe I can contrive a way to get her to pitch one to the group at some point to see how people react and then we can play it by ear from there.

    [personal profile] foxsays 2018-02-04 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
    CHARACTER: Araceli Bonaventura

FOCUS: Araceli isn't as big on the Chantry as an institution since y'know she's the rifter of this group and has certain ~opinions~ like get it the hell out of Orlais (if someone tells you to immerse yourself in all the history maybe you notice things and become Alarmed) and is concerned about Circles but is generally here for people having the right to choose where they go and for salvaging what they can from that. Going to Dairsmuid has very much coloured her opinions on a lot of things related to the Chantry.

ONGOING WORK: None, literally just strolled in for the experience.

LIKELY IMPRESSION: Why is the rifter here-- wait did she just recite part of the Chant (she can and will, the likelihood will increase the more she wants to fuck with someone.)

HOPE & DREAMS: Why is the rifter here?!? To probably argue over her 'get the Chantry out of Orlais you idiots' stance. Continuation of the discussion Herian and Araceli had about necessity in the longterm vs short term kindess because it feels relevant as well as y'know if magic is made to serve man and we rifters have something made of magic and many of us are serving more than the bare minimum are we not fulfilling the Makers will Araceli Bonaventura y Castell baby I came to play

Nari is Forces technically, but she's got a passion project that is directly related and is happy to report/chat about it 8D

    CHARACTER: Nari Dahlasanor

FOCUS: Architecture (rebuilding/refurbishing existent buildings) and sculpture, actual teachings of Andraste/the Maker vs the Chantry outlook

ONGOING WORK: Chantry grove memorial/statue of Andraste detail work and maintenance

LIKELY IMPRESSION: Well, she's Dalish, so there's that, and she's firmly attached to her own ideas of what's right (and thus sometimes has difficulty with orders) and it will be fairly obvious that she respects the Chantry faaaaaaaaar less than she respects Andraste. But she's also soft-spoken, considerate, and a very diligent and detail oriented worker who treats her crew well (although she expects a lot), doesn't consider any job beneath her, and never cuts corners.

HOPE & DREAMS: [IC] She's very close lipped about anything having to do with herself. [OOC] She's on a weird faith journey! Once she finds out about it, she's gonna be a staunch proponent of re-including the Canticle of Shartan in the Chant.
