ACTIVITY CHECK (REAL ONE)
This activity check is for JANUARY - MARCH 2023. The deadline to reply is APRIL 7.
We hope you weren't too excited about the new "A.P.R.I.L. / F.O.O.L.S." system because actually we hate numbers.
To pass AC you should provide a brief recap of what your character has been up to with at least three links to RP for the relevant time period. These links can be to posts you created, log threads, rookery/crystal threads, inbox threads, or open top-levels within plot posts.
You can use multiple threads from within the same post, such as three different logs branching from the same open prompt. You can use threads that started prior to the beginning of AC period as long as a substantial portion of tags occurred during this AC period and you haven't previously used that thread as proof. There is no minimum tag count per thread. (But if you're consistently providing primarily threads you dropped after a couple of tags, last-minute open posts you don't tag after checking the AC box, etc., we may contact you about that.)
RECAPS
Along with your links, you're providing a quick recap of what your character has been up to. The goal for this is to help everyone keep track of what's been happening, both with their own characters and with everyone else's–Riftwatch is a small enough organization that people are probably going to be aware of what everyone else is working on and any major/obvious interpersonal drama, so this is our OOC cheat sheet!
Recaps can be very brief. E.g., "Over the last three months, Paul went to Tevinter to assassinate a magister, had a fight with his best friend Joe, and learned how to use a crossbow." But you're also welcome to include more detail if you want, as long as you keep it to a couple of paragraphs max.
As far as handwaving goes, you can–as always–handwave interpersonal interactions with other characters and note those in your recap if you want a record of them. "Paul has continued to avoid Joe since their fight" with no thread showcasing the avoidance, for example. You could also handwave the whole fight! We don't care.
For work- and plot-related recap claims, however, you can only handwave your character's daily performance of their routine work. In between the more significant things you thread, we assume all characters are doing the Typical Work listed on their division wiki page. So you could say "Paul has been diligent about his work for the diplomacy division and met with a few minor nobles visiting Kirkwall to talk up Riftwatch," or "Paul has been distracted and struggling with his work for the forces division and stumbled through his routine patrols," etc., without proving that in a thread. No one has to RP paperwork or its equivalent. But we do encourage making up some Typical Work that your character has been working on during the AC period, to help ground your character in what's going on in the game world and clearly establish that they aren't only fighting with their friends or eating scones in Hightown, even if those are the only things you RP about.
What you can't purely handwave is anything significant or cool enough that other people would need to remember that it actually happened for future plot purposes–we'd define this as anything for which we normally require a plot request or a report, which we've previously provided some guidance on where those lines are here–or anything that's a significant achievement for your character rather than just daily grind stuff. Basically: if you want your character to do anything cooler than competently attending to their routine work, you've gotta RP about it somehow. That can mean RPing the actual event, or it can mean RPing discussion or planning or fallout around the event–but you have to RP something about it!
SPECIFIC CHARACTER SITUATIONS
NEW CHARACTERS: Characters who were apped during this AC period need to provide one link for each full month they were in the game. For example, for the AC period of January through March, a character apped in January would need two proofs because they were in the game for the full months of February and March (but it doesn't matter which month the two links were started in), a character apped in February would need one, and a character apped in March wouldn't need any links. Obviously you're welcome to include as many links as you have/want.
DIVISION HEADS & PROJECT LEADERS: This is where you now provide proof of your required war table assignment from the last three months. You can link to the OOC sign-up/info post. This link is in addition to your required three links for your character, not in place of it. As long as you've provided the OOC info people need to begin playing the mission within the AC period, it's fine if it's still ongoing.
OTHER LEADERS: You're required to provide proof of your character using their job in some way. This can be a war table assignment or player plot, if you chose to run one. But it can also just mean making sure that one of your AC proof links includes your character performing their job duties. E.g., the Head Archivist could link to a crystal announcement asking people to please stop dog-earing the books, a log in which they're reorganizing the library, or an inbox thread where they hound a specific person to stop hoarding library books in their bedroom.
BACKGROUND CHARACTERS: Everyone has to provide the required three links for at least one character every AC period. If you play multiple characters, then each period you can choose up to two to mark as background characters. Unlike the way side characters used to work, you can now rotate which characters you designate as background each AC period if you want, though characters with leadership roles of any kind cannot be backgrounded. You still need to provide a brief, vague-as-you'd-like recap of what they're doing in the background, so everyone else knows whether they're in the Gallows doing their work in the background or on an assignment abroad or whatever else, but you don't have to provide any links.
STRIKES
Failing to respond to AC at all will result in the character being swept.
If you fail to post any links at all for a character who isn't backgrounded, you'll have to drop them. If you post more than zero but fewer than three, you'll get a strike but can try again next quarter. If you fail to meet the three-link requirement for two quarters in a row you'll be required to drop a character. (As before, which character you drop will be up to you; it doesn't necessarily have to be the one you failed with.) This does technically mean that you could drag your feet for up to six months before dropping a character you've only written a single tag for in that time. We ask that you be kind to your CR and not do that. Again, if you seem to be abusing the system, we'll contact you to talk about it.
DON'T PANIC
Since this is a change to something we've been doing differently for SIX AND A HALF YEARS, we are obviously going to be forgiving (like, more than usual) if there's confusion or errors while we all iron out the kinks together.
SIDE CHARACTER REMINDER
Any character who's currently a side character needs to have a full app provided in order to remain in the game. They can be your background characters for AC purposes going forward, so you aren't being required to get more AC with them than you were before! We just need a full application. (If you have side characters who were previously full characters before being moved to the side, you don't need to repost their apps. We'll remember.) We'll wait until the end of activity check to remove characters without full apps from the comms.

Recap & Links: Flint reenacted the Surprised Pikachu meme + angry eyebrows when Derrica and Marcus came to ask that Riftwatch support Fiona's bid to aid Starkhaven. In the months that followed, he's been predictably paranoid about keeping control of his alleged chess pieces and making it needlessly complicated.

Recap & Links: Wysteria assisted with the Research-y noncombatant parts of the battle of Starkhaven; upon the return to the Gallows, she enjoyed a brief stint of testing some Research nonsense, before having her house cruelly overrun while being expected to entertain a nun. No one has ever suffered like she's suffered.

Recap & Links: Laurentius assisted with the diplomatic activities surrounding the battle at Starkhaven; upon return to the Gallows, he was assigned to be one of the Nun Wranglers during Mother Pleasance's visit. Recap & Links: Tony, you know, helped with Research efforts in connection to the events of Starkhaven, and otherwise stayed clear of the battlefield. Upon finally getting fed up of being in charge of paperwork, he convinced Cosima to take on assistant duties, just in time for a steady trickle of new reports to fall through rifts. Then, on the news that the Chantry was going to be sending someone in to politely terrorise them, the division heads feat. Derrica had a meeting.

Leadership Proof: Captain of the Watch proof, in which he ensures the level of
fuzzy wuzzinesssafety with regards to one of the Gallows' latest inhabitants.Recap & Links: By the end of Wintermarch, Riftwatch was in motion assisting Starkhaven in a slightly more graceful fall than it was likely to experience after Marcus, Petrana, and Derrica initiated the collaboration between the rebel mages and Prince Vael, much to Flint's aggravation. There, Marcus bravely got his shit wrecked, requiring Richard's skills in blood magic to restore him. It also seems like a good time to wrangle Matthias under his wing. Later, while relegated to Hightown during the visit of Mother Pleasance, his partners rightfully roast him for spending all of his money.

Recap & Links: Beyond his normal scouting activities, including deployments into the Arlathan Forest to assist in finding brand new horrifying temples to explore, Loxley participated in the battle for Starkhaven: helping shepherd the rebel mages with Abby, wrecking property with Yseult, and granting hugs and kisses to Derrica who is working harder than him at all times.

Recap & Links: This year, Florent is doing work! He assisted in diplomatic efforts around Starkhaven relief with Gela, and was then deployed to charm and distract the Revered Mother sent to the Gallows, and he probably did a great job. Leadership Proof: This takes place in her office, which I'm aware is pretty borderline.
Recap & Links: Petrana spent much of this quarter busily in cahoots, heavily involved in the effort to evacuate Starkhaven, after which she got kidnapped a little bit and discovered that speedrunning your friendships can leave them with awkward gaps. She was also obliged to teach Marcus a lesson about financial responsibility, which he respectfully declined to learn.

Recap & Links: Gwenaëlle was part of the Forces efforts in Starkhaven, where she did field surgery, blew up a building and delivered poignant news. After that, Flint took a leaf out of Coupe's book by accidentally talking her out of writing, she made friends with Wysteria, and got banished to Hightown to avoid calling the nun a cunt to her cunt face.

Recap & Links: John was briefly at Starkhaven before the siege got underway, departed with Petrana to retrieve a useful Chantry Mother and got lightly kidnapped. Returned relatively unscathed, spent the duration of the following month illicitly camped out in Wysteria's haunted house.

Recap & Links: Participated in cahoots to strike an agreement between the rebel mages and Starkhaven to orchestrate the fall of the city and manage the evacuation. Participated in the breaking of Starkhaven's walls with the rebel mages, did some doctoring and hugged a tiefling in the aftermath. Attended a Division Head meeting and then managed the visit of a Chantry Mother for a whole dang month.

Recap & Links: Ellie did a murder in Minrathous and had a great debrief with Yseult about it, then decided to say fuck it and finally asked Clarisse out. Later she participated in the fighting and evacuation of Starkhaven, including getting one very cute kid back to his mom. She entertained a nun offscreen, assassinated a Venatori mage and helped blow up a mine.

Recap & Links: Jude fought in the battle at Starkhaven and sustained some grievous injuries. Once healed, he caught up and had a spa day with Abby, followed by an actually productive conversation with Mother Pleasance about the nature of prayer. (Only after getting the goss from Marcus, obviously.)

Recap & Links: Gela had a rough go of baby's first active war zone, but helped out to the best of her ability! She sp(r)ent the rest of her time cultivating friendships, and had her cheerfulness weaponised against Mother Pleasance during her trip to the Gallows.

Recap & Links: In Wintermarch, Yseult spent some time in Minrathous, where she cultivated a source in the Venatori quartermaster's office by means of upper-middle-class wigs, and treated Ellie having to commit a cold-blooded execution as a positive learning experience. She and Flint circled around the issues posed by certain mages' Starkhaven arrangements, and when the time came for the evacuation she assisted by griffon, including with Loxley, and Darras (though I have dragged both of those firmly into backtagland). At the end of Guardian, she and the other Division Heads assessed the company's ability to play nice when necessary (results: not great, deeply frustrating) and then dodged the fallout by abruptly vanishing back to Minrathous and falling off the grid for most of Draknois while on an unsuccessful mission.

Recap & Links: Julius is busy as always with work as the leader of Sashamiri, and continues to process reports, send people on new assignments, and hold twice-weekly meetings. He also routinely completes his Diplomacy tasks on time; for practical reasons, these are mostly correspondence-based. The last few months were, however, slighlty more intense than usual given his particiaption in the pitching and execution of the events of Starkhaven. He had a small existential crisis about blood magic, his girlfriend was briefly abducted (it's fine), and he's looking forward to a calmer few months ahead. Please.

Recap & Links: After an eventful time in a simulation of her home world, Cosima was relieved to be fully on background duty for Starkhaven. In general, her work load still mainly includes designing and executing experiments to learn more about both red lyrium and Fade-touched flora and fauna, though she recently added serving as Tony's assistant to her plate. She also threw herself a birthday party to lighten the mood while Mother Pleasance was visiting.

Recap & Links: As a member of the Forces division, Vanya was heavily involved in the battle at Starkhaven, both on griffon-back and helping in the aftermath. He also agreed to assist Ellis with vaguely explained Warden business. In between all this, he found time to serve as the Gallows' interim seneschal (in which capacity he got to find out that smoking tobacco causes cancer, what terrible thing won't they think of next).

Recap & Links: Regardless of whether he's backgrounded or dropped, Romain spent the first three months of this year conducting his regular business in Hightown, checking in on Gwenaëlle and funneling a regular but not outrageous sum of money to Riftwatch. At the end of Drakonis, he'll have received word from his son Aurèle that he's needed to see to something in Orlais. He'll decamp to deal with that, taking his younger grandson but leaving the older one to keep an eye on things (and his cousin) in Hightown. He's arranged for Riftwatch funds to continue while he's traveling.

Accidentally got roped into physical labour by Wysteria, giving him a chance to get nosy about Research, and also witnessed the immediate Byerly shaped fallout of the Div Head nun meeting.

Tsenka rifled through his dreams and gave him some tips on Thedosian dreamwalking, and he received an invitation to assist Ellis someday with a Warden problem. He joined the rebel mages during the fight in Starkhaven, was unduly terrified by Tertia, assisted Gwenaëlle and Derrica in field medicine, and for the past month has been on Nun Duty™ attempting to be his most polite and charming and inoffensive to Mother Pleasance. (Effectiveness debatable.)

Recap & Links: Had a fun time at Starkhaven, fighting and dealing with the aftermath. Between that and riftmas chaos (wow those were both technically in the same month actually), he has not been dealing especially well. Some time and self-reflection are letting him shake the malaise, but like, also, hey, could we hurry up and invent tvs and telephones and reliable indoor heating and plumbing and soda already?? Being put to work certainly helps, although, honestly, maybe his strengths in the Chant might've been useful elsewhere...!

Recap & Links: Richard spent most of this AC cycle in backtags from the Riftmas plot, where he met a good friend of Wysteria's and Abby rescued him from a giant snake. Later he traveled to Starkhaven and played battlefield medic. He patched Marcus up with the help of blood magic and also a very unhappy Julius. He's been reclusive outside of work hours and quick to volunteer for tasks that take him away from the Gallows. Will pretend not to be in his room when there's nowhere else he could possibly be.

Recap & Links: While working on wrapping up his Project Jeshavis work and doing a lot of unexciting diplomacing, Bastien subjected a sizable portion of the company to bard sign lessons, was friendly in Marcus' direction, convened a huddle to discuss professional drama, and headed to Denerim for the Landsmeet. In his free time he's compiling rifter legends and editing the previously recovered diaries of Servana de Montfort.
