smol plot: crash dummies.
As per this network post, Tony is looking for volunteers to field test some items he's been working on after a lot of back and forth with dwarven crafters: some enchanted, some not, some in between. How this works is you will be given the item, and you may incorporate this into whatever RP you like (or leave it collecting dust in your room, if you really want), and around mid-October, Tony will come to collect it.
By signing up, you're agreeing to take ownership of but ultimately give back an item! Some of these will be buyable with AC points, some of these will just be limited use and owned by Riftwatch, but they're free for use within the confines of the plot.
Tony will report on this himself, so all you have to do is read the blurb I give you and then expect to have an answer when you're asked how it was. The sign up form below also has an option for something going wrong, in which event I will be rolling a d10 to see how bad. (If everyone picks this option, I'll probably RNG to limit the rate of failure.)
No one will actually die. Unless you really want to.

When it goes off, it impacts a radius of about 20 feet, and all things in that range are suddenly pulled to the ground, unable to move, the effect fading over about half a minute. The idea being a sort of non-lethal capture solution, or whatever your dark heart desires. The grenades become inert after activation, but can be collected and recycled later.
I rolled a 7 on your oops potential. Upon activating one of the grenades, instead of the few seconds it would normally take, it detonates and goes off right away, catching Jim and everyone surrounding him in the gravity well at what is probably an inopportune time.
As a reminder, Jim won't be able to keep these items beyond around mid to late October, as they will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Jim doesn't approach first.

When activated, laying her hands down flat on a surface will send a pulse of electricity out through them to shock and stun another person. After this initial charge, they need to be tapped again to activate.
She will also be invited out to test a bigger project that Tony is working on. The device for this is a worn apparatus that folds out into, basically, big bat wings, with dangling handles to help steer in the event of gliding. There is also an enchantment run through the harness and wing frame which can be activated in the handles or the harness itself, which is a simple Barrier spell effect to protect people from projectiles or hard landings.
Tony will definitely demonstrate this rather than let her go try it unsupervised, but she will be his test student in how to use it. After that, she is free to try it out herself, and he mentioned wanting to train griffon riders in its use to deploy mid-flight. Not that he'd tell her to do that. Haha. I mean unless she wanted to.
No oops for you, at least not as far as the devices go.
As a reminder, Adrasteia won't be able to keep these items beyond around late October to mid November, as it will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Adrasteia doesn't approach first.

This includes an adjustable leather harness with in-built spools of super-tough wire, and a separate spool that can be attached to the harness as well. A belay device to assist in smooth rappelling downwards, a few different kinds of hooks and anchors, and a pair of ascenders to assist in climbing up. If she's not personally familiar with this kind of equipment, Tony will do a demo.
Slightly more special, however, are also a pair of gloves. These are made of some kind of hide, with coppery wires run through the stitches to ensure an adjustable and close fit, with wider copper rings that fit around the wrists. The palms and fingers are lined with an odd sort of velcro-like yet organic material. By clicking the wrists together, small runic inscriptions flare up, activating some kind of affect that makes the palm-lining of the gloves stick to flat surfaces. They peel off smoothly, and then hold fast when weight is applied. There are also matching boots with this same affect on the soles.
I rolled a 1 on your oops potential. At one heart stopping moment, one of the gloves will cease to be activated, leaving her stranded. However, Ellie didn't get up too high, and she can either bang the glove against the wall until it reactivates, or parkour back down safely.
As a reminder, Ellie won't be able to keep these items beyond around mid to late October, as they will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Ellie doesn't approach first.

In addition to this, he will also be given a grappling hook projectile. It is sort of like a bulky spring-powered pistol, and when fired, will shoot a smooth bolt that springs open on a very short delay to catch on the edges of walls, tree branches, rafters, whatever it's being fired at. The other end of the wire stays fixed and can be disconnected from the pistol and attached to the user's harness. Depending on how it's been shot, i.e., to hook around a branch, the hook and wire can be loosened and tugged free from the ground.
No oops for you.
As a reminder, Aleksei won't be able to keep these items beyond around mid to late October, as they will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Aleksei doesn't approach first.

When struck, however, all kinetic force directed into the metal is repelled back at the attacker rather than absorbed, so in theory, a direct war hammer strike against the shield won't stagger Ellis, but may knock the attacker off his feet instead. A similar effect occurs with magic, if less precisely, where the magic will be repelled in whatever way makes sense according to physics or simply disperse.
The enchantment has its limits, and will need to be re-charged after a while.
I rolled a 3 on your oops potential. At some stage, instead of repelling a strike, that energy will be redirected internally in the form of heat and blow back through the underside of the shield. As this is only a minor oops, the short gust of flame will go out immediately, only singeing some of Ellis' sleeve, but render the shield unusable until further notice.
As a reminder, Ellis won't be able to keep these items beyond around mid to late October, as they will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Ellis doesn't approach first.

Oops or No Oops?: no oops. honestly I just think it would be the funnier option if emet goes to the trouble of conning someone else into initial testing and everything is Fine the whole time.

The idea is to set them and then throw them at a target, and they work better in tandem. This will not kill a person (save for the event of unlucky heart attacks or landing wrong), but be a useful non-lethal answer to a problem.
They go off without a hitch, much to everyone's dismay.

When the breastplate is struck, all kinetic force directed into the metal is repelled back at the attacker rather than absorbed, so in theory, a direct war hammer strike against the plate won't stagger Barrow, but may knock the attacker off his feet instead. A similar effect occurs with magic, if less precisely, where the magic will be repelled in whatever way makes sense according to physics or simply disperse.
The enchantment has its limits, and will need to be re-charged after a while.
I rolled a 2 on your oops potential. The breastplate will seem to be doing its job pretty well, but at one point, after a strike, it will begin to overheat uncomfortably, to the point that the metal will be dangerous to touch, and it may take Barrow a few frantic moments to take it off. After several minutes, it will cool back down, but this affect will repeat if it's tested again.
As a reminder, Barrow won't be able to keep this item beyond around late October to mid November, as it will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Barrow doesn't approach first.

When held like so, a whip attack will issue a surge of electricity on contact with the target, like a burst of lightning running from the handle through to the end of the whip. When one rune is pressed, it will give off this lightning effect in a sustained manner, so in theory you could catch someone in it and keep pumping electricity into them. It has rough ten minutes worth of capability before it needs to be returned for recharging.
No oops for you, which may be more dangerous, arguably.
As a reminder, Val won't be able to keep this item beyond around late October to mid November, as it will require AC points to purchase (but that will be an option if you're keen!). At that stage, Tony will come check in around how field testing is going, if Val doesn't approach first.

I rolled a 1 on your oops potential. At one stage, Cole fires the pistol, and something goes click, and the grappling hook is shot off way too fast and goes through the window of someone's room.

On impact, they give off an electric charge that shocks the target when struck, more pain and numbing than raw damage, but a good way to get on top of a fight. Super punches, basically. If squeezed in a certain way and pressed to a person, they will receive a sustained shock of electricity much like a taser.
No oops for you.
